A man plowed into shoppers with a truck Sunday in Akihabara, then stabbed 17 people, killing at least seven of them in a grisly attack that shocked a country known for its low crime rate.

The lunchtime violence in the Akihabara district, a popular electronics and video game area, sent thousands of people fleeing.
The assault, which occurred on the seventh anniversary of a mass stabbing at a Japanese elementary school, was the latest in a series of knife attacks that have stoked fears of rising violent crime in Japan.

TOKYO - The number of elderly in Japan hit a record high of more than 27 million in 2007, the government reported Tuesday, warning of an imminent pension crisis as the country rapidly ages.

Panel recommends 5-year visas for foreign residents, stricter controls

Apr. 3rd, 2008 | 08:36 am
posted by: [info]paulafromtwoson in [info]japanese_news

An advisory panel to the justice minister proposed Wednesday that the government abolish the alien registration system and introduce a new resident registry system similar to the one for Japanese nationals.  Based on the proposal, the Justice Ministry will submit a bill to revise the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Law and related bills to an ordinary Diet session next year, ministry officials said.

The panel called for simplifying the current dual administrative structures where the ministry undertakes immigration control and residential permit operations while local authorities handle foreigners’ registration. The panel recommended that the state control all these operations. The panel also requested that the state extend the period of stay for long-term non-Japanese residents to five years from the current three years, both renewable.  Moreover, it called for reviewing the re-entry system for non-Japanese residents who require prior permission from immigration authorities.

In Japan, if players tried to enter the Japanese kanji for Takeshima ("Bamboo Island"), a group of small islands in the Sea of Japan, the characters were not recognized. Both Japan and Korea claim ownership of the islands: Japan says its part of Shimane Prefecture, while Korea claims its part of North Gyeongsang Province.

Yamanote Halloween Train Havoc

Nov. 2nd, 2007 | 05:24 pm
posted by: [info]paulafromtwoson in [info]japanese_news

Apparently, there was some commotion this Halloween.

"As mentioned earlier this week on Japan Probe, the Yamanote Halloween Train party was planned to be held last night in Tokyo. However, sometime yesterday morning, the Japanese megaforum 2ch.net discovered that post about the event and translated the information about it into Japanese, igniting a raging storm of anti-foreign hatred and sending over 10,000 visitors to this site.

I did not attend last night’s Halloween Train party, and there are still very few reliable accounts of what happened last night. According to 2channel, the following happened:

* There were perhaps 200 to 250 foreigners present, most of them Caucasian. There was also a number of Japanese participants, most of them Japanese women.
* After getting on the train, the party-goers became drunk and loud, shouting in English and becoming aggressive towards a few Japanese.
* At some point, an idiot removed or disabled the lighting in the train car, forcing the train to make an emergency stop at Shinagawa station, where police forced everyone out of the train and tried to see what had gone wrong with the lights. It is unclear whether this put an end to the party, or if it continued afterwards."
