19th-Jul-2009 12:22 am - Grammar Help

Hi everyone!
Recently I've been reading through some notes on the passive form, and while I understand most of it, some questions have been bugging me - I tried searching it up on the net, but I haven't been able to get any conclusive answer. :(

(1) Are there any passive forms for the stative verbs いる、ある etc? As in, do they conjugate to become いられる、あわれる etc? If they exist, how are they used, i.e. what are their equivalents in English?
The latter sounds abit weird (I've never heard anything that sounds like あわれる before)... but I've definitely heard of いられる before, although it could very possibly be the potential form of いる, I guess.

(2) I was watching Last Friends, and this sentence popped up: そういうことを、しないでいられる人になって
To put it into context, because that sentence was part of a longer paragaph, this is the full speech spoken by the character:
    私とずっと一緒にいたくても、仕事場の前で待ったり、
 マンションの前で待ったり、
 友達を待ち伏せてつけたり。
 そういうことを、しないでいられる人になって。
I don't quite understand the phrase しないでいられる; why did she choose to add the verb いられる behind the negative verb しない? I understand from subtitles that she's trying to say "... become someone who doesn't do such things", so wouldn't the phrase そういうことを、 しない人になって suffice to convey her meaning? Or does the addition of the verb いられる serve an added function?

Thanks for all the help in advance! :)
Hey everyone! Can anyone tell me what this sentence mean, please?
Thanks a lot!!!

17th-Jul-2009 03:23 pm - Women using 僕
Hunting
This question is primarily aimed at the native Japanese speakers of this community.

When you hear a girl refer to herself using 僕 what sort of impression does it give you of her?
17th-Jul-2009 02:25 pm - Interchangeable names
station
I know that there are Japanese names that when romanised could be spelled like an English name though the pronounciation may not be the same, like Karen or Ann for example. Can someone list more for me, or point me to a webpage with a list? I tried googling but I just got direct translation of English names into kana which is not what I'm looking for.

16th-Jul-2009 07:41 am - Stories/Floors of a Building
castle
Sorry to have to ask such a basic question, but the translations given in the dictionaries overlap and fail to explain the distinction. 「層」 and 「階」 both refer to how tall a building is in stories or floors, and may or may not be fairly interchangeable... Is there a difference between 五層の天守 and 五階の天守?

But that's not really where I'm confused. What's really confusing me is where a building is described as 三層五階。 Does that simply mean it's three stories tall but with five distinct floors on the inside? Or the other way around? Or is there something more to it?

Much thanks.

What kind of silver mansion? May be some kind of an appartament for an old man?

KaminaHappy
Hi
When it comes to extended kana sounds, I can grasp basic ones like kya that simply have the character for ki then ya but i was just wondering if someone could clear up tenten and maru marks for me. Am i right in summarizing that :

Tenten marks next to ka,ki,ku,ke and ko create a g sound: ga,gi,gu,ge,go
Tenten marks next to sa,shi,su,se and so create a z sound: za, ji, zu ,ze ,zo
Tenten marks next to ta, te and to create a d sound:da, de, do
Tenten marks next to ha,hi,fu,he,ho create a b sound: ba,bi,bu,be,bo
And maru marks next to ha,hi,fu,he ho create a p sound: pa,pi,pu,pe,po

Thanks =]
