Has anyone read By a Lady by Amanda Elyot?
A friend send me a link to this book and I'm looking for a review of someone who really liked Jane Austen. It sounds somewhat trashy, but perhaps it's good for a laugh?

Good galloping collywobbles. Just when I thought Austen fanfic cannibalism couldn't get any worse. I haven't read the book but just the reviews on Amazon are enough to make me queasy. One says, "It's a cliche, but I can't help it: reading this novel was like watching a train wreck. You try to avert your eyes, but curiosity gets the better of you--it couldn't possibly get worse, could it? Oh yes, it could." I don't think I have the stamina to watch a train wreck and not be sick.

Now, I've daydreamed once or twice about what it would be like to suddenly find myself in Regency England, as well as several other various periods in history, but putting daydreams in a book and making them work is something else entirely. It takes somebody as clever as Mark Twain but with rather less of a political agenda. I won't be reading it. It's probable the only laugh I would get out of it would be one last maniacal cackle as I go completely off my rocker at the sheer obtuseness of the author.

I tried to read this once, and I didn't get very far. After I decided to give up reading it, I flipped through the pages looking for anything with which to horrify myself. I was not disappointed. Trashy, yes. Enjoyable, no. It is bad but definitely not good bad. Best to avoid.

to be true: that's what I expected so I can save my reading time for other books. Thanks a lot
