A friend send me a link to this book and I'm looking for a review of someone who really liked Jane Austen. It sounds somewhat trashy, but perhaps it's good for a laugh?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the Jane fandom, and have only ever seen "Becoming Jane". I've never read any of her books, but I would like to start.

I just have one question, which is the best to start with?

TIA :)

I've been pointed to by the blog Jane Austen's World ([info]janitesonjames) to another interesting one by Chris Dornan, Peace and Wisdom (I've syndicated it as [info]peaceandwisdom), which Jane Austen's World characterizes as Mr. Dornan's musings about Jane’s novels, politics, and Buddhism. Recently his thoughts have turned mostly to Jane.

Hey everyone.

This semester in uni, we were given the opportunity to write an essay on any topic, totally removed from the curriculum. I did mine on adaptations of Sense & Sensibility, and I thought I'd post it here and see if anyone was interested.

Attempts to update Sense & Sensibility to give it ‘modern’ appeal fail to satisfactorily transfer the novel to the screen.

When I watch a Jane Austen adaptation or other period film, I have to admit the prettiness is always a big factor. It seems only just to our beloved authors to set their stories in gorgeous landscapes and people them with nice-looking, well-costumed actors.

I've been thinking though, these movies don't just please the eyes. If you guys are up for it, I thought we could chat about the sounds of period films. In two parts:

1) Which actors (male or female) have the best voices? Whose voice do you dislike (esp. if you're not intended to)?

2) Which costume dramas have the best music?

We can talk about Austen-related movies or any classic adaptations. I'm going to start by nominating Becoming Jane for best soundtrack, and two men who are, in my opinion, the most obvious choices for Best Voice in a Costume Drama :)

21st-Apr-2008 08:24 pm
lo in the morning

Has anyone ever come across a really good "Which Jane Austen Heroine Are You?" quiz?

I want a quiz which is personality related, not circumstance-related. I don't want to be told I'm Elinor Dashwood because I've got an overly romantic sister and a silly mother who I often find myself taking care of etc. I'd love a quiz where the results are based on personality and where the options for each question aren't in painfully obvious reference to a certain heroine.

So do you guys know of any?

Thanks in advance :)
