Jacob Benjamin Gyllenhaal was born on December 19, 1980 in Los Angeles, California, USA. Jake was born into stardom with his father, Stephen Gyllenhaal, as a film director, and his mother, Naomi Foner, as a screenwriter. His older sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal, is also in entertainment as an actress.
In 1998, Jake graduated from a private high school in North Hollywood at Harvard-Westlake High School. He attended Columbia University but had dropped out after two years.
This 23 year old, six foot tall, talented actor made his first small supporting role in the 1991's City Slickers as "Danny Robbins". In 1993, he went on with his career playing "Edward" in Josh and S.A.M. and featured in two of his father's films, A Dangerous Woman as "Leon" and Homegrown (1998) as "Jake/Blue Kahan". Jake made his starring debut in October Sky, based on a true story, as "Homer Hickam" in 1999 and two years later, made a breakthrough performance in Donnie Darko. As a result to Donnie Darko, he was nominated for "Best Male Lead" in the Independent Spirit Awards (2002) and won "Breakthrough Performance-Male" in Young Hollywood Awards (2002). Donnie Darko has also been released in theaters nationwide as Donnie Darko: Directors Cut.
Jake's most recent finished project is Proof which will hit theaters on December 24, 2004. He is in post-production for Brokeback Mountian and is in pre-production for Jarhead.
