GenCon: The Planning (First Edition)

Okay, first of all, who is planning on going? (Unless there are some changes, you don't need to answer this if your name is already on the list below) If you're not going, feel free to ignore this post.
If you are going as part of my posse, click here. If you're going on your own or in another group, I'd still like to hear that so maybe we can all meet up )

Teething AND a cold. Thank goodness for nasal pumps, but she no longer sleeps through the night (woke me up 5 times last night!). And because I'm an horrible person, I threw her at my mom last night so I could go see one of my tween-years Gods. Great french pop band that have been going on for decades and managed to update their style along the way. I got into them when I was 12 and that made me way uncool (amongst other reasons :P) and seeing them was like seeing Def Leppard: A long overdue time to watch a 50 years old prance around in tight jeans. A dwarfish, effeminate 50 years-old with a semi-cool generic haircut. Works for me! Still, opposite to Joe Elliott, this guy doesn't look like a 50 years-old, not one bit.

This way if you've got time to waste for good french pop-rock )

We saw a new electrotriphopsomething band named Beast too. REALLY good stuff.

Yep, it's another birthday

Specifically, [info]luna_61's, aka, Chris, aka, Tina, aka, my friend.

So - what do you get your friend? I could make a wallpaper - but come on, it would be nothing she couldn't do better herself. So that left, really, just one thing.

A story. Specifically, an SGA/McShep story but from another POV. *G*

So under the cut, you'll find my birthday pressie for [info]luna_61 - I call it a...Chris-Sue. *smirk* You may call it crack!fic. *g*

Note: It should be stated right up front that while I love Chris - I don't love her enough to give her either John or Rodney. That probably makes me a bad friend. *G*

Osterman-Tolstoy at Fili.

This painting by Kivshenko represents the military council held at the village of Fili right after the Battle of Borodino. It was there that the decision to abandon Moscow to the French was made. Kutuzov had summoned his principal generals to it and though most of them opposed the abandonment of Moscow, and in fact proposed to attack Napoleon's forces, he ordered the retreat. Famously one of the Generals that did support his idea was Count Osterman-Tolstoy who, according to some sources said: 'Moscow does not constitute Russia: our purpose is not simply the defence of the capital, but the whole country, and for that the main object is preserving the army.'

In the Russian 1967 movie "War and Peace" when the scene opens at the council in Fili, the whole set-up copies this painting almost exactly.

Count A. I. Osterman-Tolstoy is the fifth from the left, the one who is leaning back against the wall by the window. I absolutely love the way he is placed in the painting, with the sunlight almost giving a sort of glow to him. (Yes, I am a fangirl! XD)

Click the painting for a bigger version. :D (So you can see pretty Count Osterman-Tolstoy better. ^_^)

State of the Writer

Star Trek XI fandom is totally spoiling me. You guys comment like crazy, and it all feels like a community, not the "mama bird facing a thousand selfish hungry chicks" feeling I get every time I update [info]backagainharry over on the Pit of Voles. It makes me want to just keep writing more.

(Sorry, BAH fans here! I do love you, too! I expect watching HP6 to give me a boost on that one).

Anyway, so: [info]startrekbigbang. I've not yet completed a Big Bang challenge, but in both cases that's because I went in with a vague idea, and it was 2008, the year of RL smackdown and depression. This year, I've already written over 62,000 words-- a good 150% more than in all of last year-- so ability's not an issue, and I have a solid idea. In fact, my sign-up post reads: "I dove into this fandom with the intention of writing a particular plotline, but so far have written more than twenty thousand words of short stories around that idea instead, so I figure this is the best excuse I'm going to get to finally knuckle down and write it."

---Yes. That's the "facing the media" story. Or, more properly, the "Okay, so they get back to Earth. What are some of the before-going-back-out niches that fandom hasn't thoroughly explored yet?" story.

I'm also noodling more on those reward stories I promised back in March, before I got seduced by Captain Pike. So between those two preoccupations, my regular STXI ficlet production may slow down some. But I won't stop posting shorts entirely; I am still completely in love with this universe. ♥♥

Ugh @ Politicians

I unfortunately do not have a copy of the original text of the letter I sent due to having to use the official website and not my email client. But as I recall it was a simple one or two sentence email to the effect of "Do you support the repeal of DOMA and DODT?" or something similar. A few weeks later I got this response:

---- RESPONSE ON 14 MAY 09 ----
Dear Mr. Chaput-Branson:

Thanks for your message about the Defense of Marriage Act. I appreciate hearing from you.

As you may know, Congress already passed the "Defense of Marriage Act" in 1996, which reserves the right of states to regulate marriage. The law specifically gives states the right to refuse to recognize a law of another state legalizing marriages between same‑sex couples. There is no current legislation that would usurp the rights of states to regulate marriage. Be assured, I will continue to follow this issue.

Thanks, again, for your message, and I will keep your support in mind. Please keep in touch.

Sincerely,

Rep. Peter DeFazio
Fourth District, OREGON

Okay... that didn't answer my questions so I went the DeFazio's webpage and emailed him again including the above response from him.

--- REPLY ON 23 JUNE 09 ---
Mr. DeFazio,

Are you meaning to imply that you support DOMA? Your response is vague.

I am interested in Marriage Equality for all citizens. I support the repeal of DOMA and an amendment to the constitution banning discrimination in marriage - on a federal AND state level.

I hope to see more states like Iowa moving towards equality and putting pressure on President Obama and the current congress to act now!

I wish to hear your response on this matter. This issue will be the deciding factor on if I will continue to support you as my Representative.

Do you support equal rights?

Mike Chaput-Branson
PO Box 21336 | Eugene, Oregon 97402

--- RESPONSE 15 JULY 09 ---
Dear Mr. Chaput-Branson:

Thanks for your message urging my support for HR 2981 the Employment Nondiscrimination Act. [link to text of bill] I appreciate hearing from you.

You will be pleased to know that I am once again a cosponsor of this bill. I've been proud to cosponsor this legislation each year it has been introduced since I've served in Congress. I have lobbied my colleagues on the issue and helped pick up cosponsors over the years.

Again, thanks for your message. I hope you will continue to let me know your views on issues before the Congress, and don't hesitate to contact me if I can ever be assistance to you.

Sincerely,

Rep. Peter DeFazio
Fourth District, OREGON

I'm sorry. What the hell? I never said ANYTHING about the HR2981. With congressional access and transparency at a higher and higher demand there is no way that I can continue to support or vote for DeFazio if I continue to get responses like this.

I understand that he is a politician, and I fully expect canned/prepared responses from his aides. However, these responses are vague at best.

If Peter DeFazio will not come out publicly against DOMA and DODT then I rescind my previous support of him and NOT vote for him if he runs for re-election next year.

And now continues my month of chaos.

I'm home from Georgia, and worn out from my relatives.

And I now have five days in which to get ready for my trip to San Diego with Sam.

Much as I am looking forward to that half of the month? I am so tired and worn out from my relatives that I just wanna curl up in a ball and not think from now 'til then.

Also? I really fucking need some more money. D:

various Trek fic recs

There's been many a great fic to emerge from the explosion of creativity that the new Trek movie brought about. The latest one I've enjoyed is also the latest in a series by [info]kagedtiger called "timeverse" series. This links to that tag at her journal: Timeverse. It's K/S (yes, naturally, what can I say?) and what I love about it is the fact her characters aren't panting at each other from the start. There's issues, not the least of which is....the whole thing is a mistake. Or, if not actually a mistake, then...a series of unplanned-for events that ends up in a situation no one anticipated.

Go forth, start at the first (at the bottom of the journal page) and read.

Second rec is for a gen reboot Trek fic that made me *snort out loud* more than once. It's hysterical. (If you've never seen the comm [info]ontd_startrek , then you must go forth and look. It's...unique, and hysterical.) This fic was inspired by a macro someone made on the comm. Just...don't be drinking while you're reading.  [info]blcwriter 's   Iowa was No Place for Heroes .

Third rec is a TOS K/S, something I grokked from [info]killa :  What You Love  by [info]sans_pertinence . Meaty, wonderfully written....this story shows Kirk as he really is seen in the original series, without any changing--no romanticizing of him, no warping of him at all. Shows his warts AND his extraordinary nature (with, of course, that extraordinary stuff much more prevelent, as it really was. Srsly.  :-))

Fourth is an entry by [info]liketheriver :  Starting Gate.  Gen reboot Trek, Bones' voice. She says Bones wouldn't shut up, and I'm so glad!! This is another one you want to watch the drinking while reading thing, or you're gonna have spray all over the monitor. I'm just sayin.

Fifth and last for now is one of the first big slash K/S reboot stories, Breaking Points by [info]ragdoll987 . Link goes to the epilogue where all the previous parts are listed and linked. Great slow build, with lots of story and plot happening. Which is, natch, just my kind of thing.

And that, as they say, is that. For now.

Time to run?

Oh hey, you know that moment when the main character of a book / movie enters the spooky house, with a spooky music running in the background, and doesn't turn the light on but comes in while tripping over bloody cadavers?
When anybody with an ounce of sanity would run away in the other direction?

I'm having one of these moments. There's my MC, Jenny, and she's running after a child, only she's starting to realise it's not a child but a ghost. And what is she supposed to do now?

I need her to go forward (for the all-hail-the-plot, you know), but she's a bit spooked right now. Can't blame the poor woman, really. I know I would run the hell away from there. She might just do that, too. She's yelling at me for putting her in that situation in the first place, and let me tell you, you don't want to see her when she's angry.

Gosh and that was actually a scene I had planned out. For all I know, this story is going to end up about fluffy ghost bunnies from Mars being harbingers of the Apocalypse.

[you stared, as if to say 'you've got to be mad' - and that made my day]

i was a bit much online this last week, which was all torchwood's fault of course - i couldn't miss anything ;) it was fun, but rl is fun too (of course me stepping back from the internets was followed by the two days migraine from hell, but whatever).

so, a random!things post...

some art + a picture meme thing )
harry potter + eureka fangirling ) i'll need to watch more to know more - but it's a really cute show. and cause cute shows deserve cute vids, here a rec for two awesome, although not extremely new vids. YAY!

hummingbird pneumonia by [info]talitha78
a shiny, beautiful vid about the way eureka's science affects the people living there. it's all shiny happy. except when it isn't.

industrial strength tranqualizer by [info]jmtorres
sherrif carter needs a lot of strength to fight the weirdness & trouble of that small town (and its inhabitants), hee.

also: *squishes him* i love carter SO MUCH, seriously. i especially love how he never asks for directios & always have to come back - and everyone knows it, *giggles*

and another thing i've come to love: the amount of 'science made them do it' fic in this fandom... *lol* so many! it's astonishing & hilarious.

• two cute-ish fics, cause (as you may have noticed) i'm very much in the mood for cuteness. especially in these two fandoms -

torchwood. the face of god (or: ianto hears a who) by [info]alex51324
