Let's adopt the Potterverse
I was pretty upset about this whole carpetbook thing and getting more upset the more it seemed like it really was the real book and not fake.

And I have to go to bed really soon (a midnight party after working 8am to 5pm) but I really wanted to make this post.

As far as I'm concerned, if the real book is the same as carpetbook, it's a message from JKR that she's done with the whole universe and characters. It is just so craptastic that it's downright disrespectful to us. It's like she's saying that she wants to end this all, that she had her time with it and now everybody's dead in stupid ways and now it's all over. No more Harry Potter ever because she's done with it.

But, if she doesn't want it, we do. Let's just be determined to accept that gift if that's what she's doing. She's tired of it and throwing it away, basically (which is what I suspected starting with book five) so now it belongs to us, the fans. Which means that we can do anything we want, including ignore this last book. Because it's not really a book so much as a statement of "you guys were taking this too seriously and so for lulz I'm destroying the universe".

So, it won't really be so bad if carpetbook isn't a hoax. It just means JKR has abandoned the Potterverse to the fans.

Agreed. There are talks of writing our own DH book if the carpetbook is real. Our way of saying, "Yeah, Jo, you fucked up. Now it's our turn."

Betcha it'd be better.

Damn, where have I heard this one before? Oh yeah, from the H/Hr shippers after HBP and the horrible treatment they got just for suggesting such a thing. Not mocking you or anything, it is irony, you know?

if carpetbook is real ... and my last vestiges of hope are slowly fading ... i'm just going to read from SS-GOF over and over again every time i feel like reading HP. the last three will be ignored.

GOF is my personal favorite ... out of curiosity, what is everyone else's favorite book of the series? (i already know i'll get a lot of POAs ... if many people even answer. i get the feeling that they won't since i'm up at 2:35 AM for some strange reason.)

I totally agree with you! The first four were amazing, and then... It just seemed like the last two (or three) were written by a completely different person! WTF, JKR? WTF? *sob*

But, on topic, my favorite is GoF, too. ;)

My favorite is PoA, not surprisingly. I like it because the plot is different than the rest of the books. Voldemort isn't really in it, there's a bunch of twists and red herrings which are actually decently done (at least I don't think kids would easily guess the ending), and it introduces more information about Harry's past and his parents. I love the Marauders and their story, it's one of the more interesting parts of PoA.

I also love GoF, however. My affection is torn between PoA and GoF for my favorite. I haven't reread it in a few years because it's longer.

I really dislike CoS for some reason, and SS's isn't the best book in the series, but I like them because they have that innocent charm to them.

I believe OotP is well-written, but after I finished it, I felt worn out and kind of sad. Yeah it was a sad book, but I felt sad for other reasons, I don't know, it was just not as fun or entertaining to read as the others. And I really disliked HBP. I recentlly reread HBP to get ready for DH, and I was so disappointed afterward. It made me think, Okay, is it just me realizing that Harry Potter is the most overrated crap ever for the first time, or is this just a a really bad book? Bleh.

Yes. There should be a DH NaNoWriMo or something.

If this is real, it really does seem like she was just tired of the universe. We know from interviews that she loves reading the theories, and this just seems like she took a bunch of random ones and slapped them all together, then called it a book. I mean, for God's sake, she didn't even pay attention to what SHE said would be in the book! What happened to the Potters' professions being important, huh? For having this planned out for 20-something years, it sure seems disorganized... *facepalm*

Kind of reminds me of how Sir Arthur Conan Doyle got so fucking sick of writing Sherlock Holmes stories and how much everyone loved the fucker that he wrote him falling to his death off a cliff. Then he brought him back to life because audiences begged and he knew he could make a lot of money off bringing him back.

Too bad JKR didn't kill of the whole passel of them. I'd much rather they all be dead dead dead than OBHWF. *gag, vomit*

Exactly what I am thinking.
I'm pissed with this book for a lot of reasons (one of them being that she completely killed off my ship *points to icon*), so if the ugly carpetbook is real, I won't know about it.
I will simply keep on writing fanfic and take off from HBP (which was my favorite, btw, that and PoA) and pretend the whole thing never happened.

But. I'm still calling fake. The epilogue might be the real thing, but the rest? Fake. I will believe in an elaborate hoax till I hold the book in my very own hands.

Well said. I've been paranoid since HBP...there were so many great sixth year fanfics that were WAY better than that disappointment of a book. To think that Rowling is capable of writing something even worse? *shakes head* I absolutely believe that there are plenty of fandom writers that could put Rowling to shame. There will be so many new fics coming out in the next few weeks, months, years...even though the canon series is over, there will always be fanon. And to be honest, that's the only comforting thought I have about this whole mess.

Couldn't agree more. A good, thorough and real true to the story retelling of how the seventh year went (should have gone) might be the only thing that would keep me reading in the fandom. As it is, I feel let down and utterly disappointed, don't even want to go to the midnight release as I do not want to pay any money to own my very own carpet book. No thanks.

Is that the "community" doesn't all want the same thing.

Some will have liked the story, but thought the epilogue was cheesy.

Some will have just wanted more information from the epilogue, but not to change what happened.

Some just cannot accept the fact that their pet theories were wrong.

Some had become overly emotionally invested in specific characters or ships, and will always think JKR didn't give them enough time.

Some just expected way too much from Rowling, who has always been a flawed but exciting writer.

Even though a lot of people agree they hate CarpetBook, they don't agree on why.

it's a message from JKR that she's done with the whole universe and characters

Given that it's always been known the Harry Potter series would be over within seven books, it seems odd to suggest the possibility that she would not be "done with the whole [HP] universe".

everybody's dead in stupid ways

Because you'd never hear of that happening in real life =)

It just means JKR has abandoned the Potterverse to the fans.

I'm confused, how does finishing a series equate to abandoning to fans?

The thing is not that it's the last book in the series-it always has been supposed to be that way. And it's not that everybody's dead. It was, after all, a war.

The thing is that I actually read carpetbook, scanned first page to scanned last page, and there is just so much wrong with the way it is written. It is not at all a good story and it does not allow suspension of disbelief. Too much "god in a box" stuff that's just too convienent. It's like she realized there were too many loose ends and just wadded them up together in two montage scenes. And there is so much OOC stuff.

What I mean by abandoning it is that this last book seems to have been written without respect for the characters, the universe, or the fans. Had it been well-written, I wouldn't say that. But, well, it was craptastic. It felt like she just wanted to get the last book out and over with so she just wrote whatever. And, to me, that says she got tired of it and doesn't want it any more.

You managed to put what I have been feeling since I read the leaked book into words. For some time now my husband has had the opinion that Rowling never intended for her series to get as big as it did and after a while, didn't have a clear idea of what she was doing. After this last book, I'm inclined to agree.

Like many others, I'm inclined to ignore this last book as part of the story. It makes me think of the video game "Prince of Persia" when your character gets killed and he says, "Uh, no, it didn't happen that way. Let's try this again."

The Potterverse has not been abandoned. It is never abandoned unless the author says it's abandoned. Them's the rules - Canon is Canon and that's that.

It's rather like Doctor Who. I've always detested the fact that the 8th Doctor from the Fox TV Movie was official. Or the changes in the New Series - Time War and the destruction of Gallifrey indeed. But the BBC has declared it to be Canon, and so I must accept.

Be content with your Canon. At least it's complete, unlike most comic books.
