The biggest proof that it can't be fake.
The US version of DH is supposed to have 784 pages.
The leaked (carpet) US version of DH has 759 pages plus 25 pages of blank pages, title page, table of contents, etc.
It is not just unlikely, but virtually impossible to write a fanfic thats the exact same length of the actual book along with eerily realistic artwork for each chapter and perfect formatting that matches every US edition of the previous books.

That's why it's a hoax by Rowling or the publishers, d'uh.

Next please.

All you need to do is browse the 40+ entries in this community and you'll see that the page numbers are a minor detail when you look at the blatant out of character dialog, the grammatical errors, and the horrible cover, that you'll realize that the evidence pointing to this "leak" being a fake, is really quite logical in proving that it is indeed, a hoax.

WAIT WAIT WAIT aren't the table of contents and shit included in the carpet leak? Also, 25 pages? Seems like a lot of blanks.
I donno; maybe I'm lol ignorant as to how the books are designed.

25 blank page would be a total waste of paper!

Isn't the fact there are 25 pages of blank paper proof enough of it being a fake? There usually isn't that much blank paper, right? And since we've known the page count for ages, if it wasn't some big hoax by Jo (and instead a joke by some group of fans), wouldn't it be easy for them to add a bunch of extra blank pages, so that the numbers matched up?

Perfect formatting? Pfft. Yeah, right. Since when does Rowling include poems/excerpts from other works after the table of contents? Plus that lightning bolt dedication is just a little to cheesed-out for me.

i read something from a scholastic employee who said he had read a copy of the book, and he said that there would be a poem in the prologue. THIS WAS BACK IN APRIL.

You mean the Scholastic employee who did that chat or whatever where he gave out "spoilers"? Because he was revealed to be a fake, so....

omg, so I write this epic long fan fic and then see in the info regarding the new book that it has to be x number of pages, so I write a bit more and stick in enough blank ones to make it match up and voila! It's the real thing!

You got to be kidding. This is the proof?

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]ora_sama
2007-07-18 08:17 am UTC (link)
700+ pages isn't that surprising for a fanfic... fanfic writers have written asslong fanfictions all the time, and for a big hoax like this? It wouldn't be a big deal. And this isn't even bringing up Rowling paying people to write something

And what's so shocking about adding in extra blank pages to make the fake fit the released page number? If I were faking a book and mine was a few pages too short, that's what I'd do.

Yup, and I imagine the "author" will out themselves after the book release thinking how cool they were to pull this stunt. Hey, it's the most read fan fic ever.

No comment on what the reaction will be.

At least I learned from all this that Kinko does book binding. Now that is cool.

-sigh- I'm going to believe it's a fake until the book comes out. So it's not like what you say will change my opinion.

But I'm a conspiracy theroist. And anyways, I know of plenty of fanfics written past the length of OOTP. Not impossible.

I know entire series rewrites that are longer and were written faster than Jo's stuff. Maybe I am just in denial, but writing a fake really doesn't seem that impossible to me :/
