Anime Coloring Tutorial [Yami no Bakura]
Learn how to go from to in PS 7

First, prep your base. Usually, this might mean brightening it with a screen layer, or shapening it slightly. I also used Auto Contrast, Auto Levels, and Auto Colors. Crop to 100x100 pxl.
Next, create a new fill layer with #1B2A51, and set it on exclusion, 100%.
Then, add another new fill layer in #F2E5D2 #F2E5D2, and set it on multiply, 100%.
Add one last fill layer in #F1CBFC, and set it to colorburn, 100%.
Duplicate your base, drag it to the top of the layer set, and set it to softlight, 100%.
Duplicate the base again, sharpen it once, and set it to softlight, 100%.
Create an adjustment layer in Curves. Imput these settings:
Red:
Input: 0
Output: 255

Input: 255
Output: 0

Blue
Input: 0
Output: 255

Input: 255
Output: 0

Set the layer to softlight, 100%. I know it looks ugly right now, but work with me. xD
Create another adjustment layer, this time in Selective Coloring. Imput these settings:
Red:
(c) -30, (m) +20, (y) -50, (b) 0

Yellows:
(c) 0, (m) +20, (y) -30, (b) -20

Greens:
(c) +30, (m) -20, (y) -20, (b) 0

Cyans:
(c) +100, (m) 0, (y) -50, (b) 0

Blues:
(c) +100, (m) 0, (y) -100, (b) 0

Neutrals
(c) +10, (m) +5, (y) -10, (b) -15

Set the layer to normal, 100%
Paste this texture by [info]ewanism, and set it to screen, 100%.
Duplicate your base a final time, move it to the top, sharpen it once, and set it to softlight, 100%. And that's it!

If you have any questions, feel free to ask! Lemme know what you get out of the tutorial, but please don't copy the icon completely. :D

At first I thought it was a tutorial on 'how to set a museum on fire' but no, it's just really purty lights. xD

XD Yes, because that's what Bakura really needs to do: Set the museum on fire. Although, the fact that his host owns the museum would probably give him all the more reason and give him amusement too.

XD I so got this great image in my head now.

Bakura: Wooo! BURN SHIT! >D
Ryou: ;_;

Epic win!

Tehehe~ That is a great image! Too bad Bakura needed the museum (in manga-verse), 'cause that's where the final Dark Game took place, but still... "BURN SHIT! >D" hehehehe~

I'm sorry you feel that way. Unfortunately, I prefer to do more with images than just crop, sharpen, contrast them a little, and then post them. And so far, I've had people appreciate my icons for the style that I make them in.

I probably would have stopped at step six myself. I know a lot of people seem to like all manner of effects, but I'm content with a sharp-looking icon.

Yes, like you said, there's no need to use the entire tutorial. The tutorial is just a basis for people to to learn how to do different effects on an icon, and isn't necessarily meant to be copied exactly. I am glad that you found part of the tutorial helpful. :)

I don't often try out tutorials, but I tried this one out.

I personally like how this turned out, especially since it's very different from what I usually do, and I hated the look of the original screenshot.

Thanks for the tutorial, I'll be sure to use it in the future.

I just needed to post you something. Yor icons are just amazing, and you're a sweetheart for posting these how to posts. I went through most of your journal, but I couldn't find the colored pics of the manga from your icon. Do you think you could send them to me? I love that one and it looks so sexy colored <3

We should chat sometime, I'm a big yugi fan!

Oh, this particular icon was in my latest icon set here, and is actually from a Yuugiou doujinshi (a fan comic, rather than the actual manga) called Moon's Desert, where the pairing is Bakura x Ryou. The original, non-colored image is here, but unfortunately I did not save the colored version. :\ (I don't usually do that). If you'd like a tutorial on how to color manga, and I can direct you to one, though. :)

This tutorial is great and so easy to follow! Thanks ^_^

Also, if you don't mind, I have two questions: Where do you get the scan from Moon's Desert? and Do you take tutorial requests?

You're welcome, and thanks!

I got the scans a while back, and you can download it here (Right click + Save as). As for requests, I will definitely try. I don't have all my icons saved as .psd, so I sometimes forget how they're made, but if you have one in mind, I might be able to reproduce it for a tutorial. :)

Thanks for the scans! XD

I've been wanting to make animated icons like this one: Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Thanks again!

Oh, not a problem! I'll make a tutorial for an icon that uses a similar affect, since I don't have that one saved anymore. :) It'll be up in a day or so, k? ♥
