| Description: | Why are people uncomfortable claiming the label "Feminist" these days? |
This community is specifically to discuss why people are uncomfortable calling themselves feminist. At its heart, feminism is simply the concept that women are people too. On the surface, that seems like a simple enough thing to be comfortable with, but lots of people agree with that but feel the need to add, "...but I'm not a feminist."
The obvious answer is that the label feminist is associated with man-hating separatists, but that glosses over the whole issue we want to discuss. Why is it associated with man-hating separatists? Why does even more moderate feminism seem to distress people?
Examples of obvious discussions include classism and racism in feminism, an apparent disdain for women who make more traditional choices with their lives, the anger of people who are new to seeing the discrimination around them and managing the perceptions it engenders, and other similar discussions.
My goal in creating this community is to provide a safe place to have discussions that may be quite critical of Feminism as a movement in the hopes of understanding how feminists (including myself, for I do claim that label myself) can be more effective and more inclusive and actually resolve these issues, without losing the core ideas that women are people and deserve to be treated like people.
The community is moderated and will stay that way, and I make no claims to being fair in that moderation. Attacks will be deleted and users who attack will be banned. I am quite willing to ban feminists who are uncomfortable with the criticism and anyone who wants to insist that women do not deserve the same consideration as men do.
