Music sites? [02 Jul 2009|09:53am]

andustar
Hi all, my name's Shani. I was born in Israel but have been living in London since I was very young. I still speak Hebrew fluently and read it fine, although slowly. Unfortunately though I can't spell to save my life, and don't have a Hebrew keyboard, which makes trying to Google anything a bit of a pain.

Recently I've been getting interested in the Israeli music scene, about which I know a total of absolutely nothing. But I would love to see live music when I'm there, and to follow what's going on, listen to music in Hebrew, etc. I've been feeling an itch for new music lately and I could use the language practice. However I'm hampered by the above. The only Israeli music I have is from my parents and about twenty years old! I'm fed up of their collection of Matti Caspi and Achinoam Nini :P

Can anyone recommend any good music sites or blogs? I'd just like somewhere where I can pick up some names and get an idea of what's going on. My music tastes are pretty broad and I'm hoping to widen them further so anything goes at the moment. I just need somewhere to start.

Feel free to reply in Hebrew, I could use the practice :)

ISRAVISION ! [14 May 2009|10:32am]

[ mood | jubilant ]

Israel's winning song, "There Must Be Another Way," which is performed by a Jewish singer and a Christian Arab, was greeted by one of the most exuberant group of fans, who waved Israeli flags and inflatable hammers and sang along word-perfect.

"We're proud of our nation. It was unbelievable," said one fan, Moshe Melman, who carried a giant hammer with the Star of David. He said about 50 supporters had flown from Tel Aviv.

"We want to show the coexistence of Jewish and non-Jewish people in Israel," Melman said. "There must be another way, as in the words of the song."

"We feel our victory is not only for both of us and for our song, but also for what we represent," Tel-Aviv-born singer Noa told journalists after the show. "We represent hundreds of thousands of people who are moderates, who choose life over death."

Inadvertently funny [27 Apr 2009|03:25pm]

I was listening to the news on the radio in Seattle, and the commentator reported that two people in Israel have been hospitalized with swine flu, "or as the Israeli government has renamed it, the Mexican flu, as they're calling it there to avoid offending Muslims and Jews who avoid pork."

Added the commentator, in a rather clipped voice, a postscript that I suspect was not scripted, "There is no record of how the Mexicans feel about this."

an amazing book i need to recommend - Ace of Spades by David Matthews [12 Apr 2009|06:41pm]

movehalfaninch
this is my first posting. hello! my name is sarah, and i'm half black half jewish. my mother is jewish.

A friend of mine recommended a book called 'Ace of Spades' by David Matthews (you can find it here: http://tr.im/iGsu), and I love it so much. I'm half way through it and I can't believe how great this book is. It's so funny and personable. There are moments where I have to put the book down and just burst out laughing. But wow, is it well written! David Matthews is poetic with his words. Truly astounding.

Here's a brief description from The New Yorker:
The son of a Zionist white mother and a Malcolm X-admiring black father, Matthews, in this memoir, is a boy without a race in a city, Baltimore, that requires him to choose one. The story of racial pinball is not entirely unfamiliar: the black kids reject him as too light-skinned, the whites as too broad-nosed. But Matthews displays improvisational verve—blacks are "burnished" and "browned butter," and whites are anything from "alabaster" to "a puffy marshmallow in Baltimore’s steaming cup of cocoa"—and narrates with the vigor of a movie script. Indeed, it is on television that, as a child, he finds the clarity he yearns for. "I was a living contradiction of elements that shouldn’t have been," he writes at one point, whereas on TV "everything was black, or white, and a lot like life."

Really, i can't recommend this book more! I love it! Have you read it?

חילופי גלויות - פוסטקרוסינג [11 Mar 2009|09:12am]

Postcards Exchange

Hi guys, I am running the London Marathon for 'Kisharon' a charity that helps educate Jewish children with learning difficulties. It is a most noble cause but is losing out because of the credit crunch. Please find time and money to help these children and sponsor me.

Many Thanks

dear israel,

i worked on a kibbutz as a teenager and
you know i love you like a brother, but i have to say
i think you're making a tragic mistake.

you say your war will create peace.
but i haven't seen any of that.

i have a serious differences
with your military strategists:

and i'm disappointed that your left wing seems to have disappeared

a cynic might say this is your last hurrah before obama
clips your wings.

you know you can't bomb an ideal into submission,
and the more you try the longer you prolong the dispute.
the whole operation seems thoroughly illogical.

if i was a 24 year old gazan medical professional.
no hamas fan.
how would i see it?
how would my friends see it?
STATE TERRORISM, perhaps.

oh, btw. if you want to stop random rockets,
block the tunnels.
it's not rocket science. (no pun intended)

love from
recrea.

5 reasons on which I support Israel in the arab-israeli conflict: [12 Jan 2009|04:06pm]

ilyush
1. I like regimes at which the leader can be put in jail more than those at which the leader can be just killed.
2. I do not want people who still rise up every night by cries of their muezzin to conquer people who are able to set an alarm clock.
3. I prefer people that put their hand on a heart and not on a knife when they hear about sex-adventures of their daughter.
4. It seems more correct to pay money for leaving the wife, than for buying wives.
5. I can understand people who bury their killed children immediately, and do not understand those who show their killed children's corpses in front of TV cameras.

UPD: This is my nice translation of 5 from 10 reasons taken from this post: http://l-u.livejournal.com/300194.html

MOSCOW SUPER MISLED A TENANT FOR A JEW [26 Dec 2008|04:32pm]

alteus
MOSCOW, RUSSIA. Superintendent of a Magnolia apartment block in the Russian capital, Irina Ustinova, admitted she “would not tolerate the Jews and other aliens in the building she has been in charge of for sixteen years”.

Ustinova made her hatred statements during a spontaneous meeting with a handful of the owners and tenants in the evening of December 25. She got furious after she had learnt that one of the apartment’s owners rented out his flat to a family where one of its members allegedly was of Jewish origin, as she claimed it, "judging from his appearance".

Ustinova made an attempt to break into the family's apartment located on 11, Yaltinskaya street, southern Moscow, trying to intimidate the new tenants and demanding them to “get out to Israel immediately”.

Using her authority as a superintendent, she opened the corridor door by her set of keys and shouted out anti-Semitic slogans, other insults and filthy stuff toward the male tenant, 43, his wife, ethnic Russian, 29 and their 3-month old son . She boasted that she “is experienced in cleaning up the building from non-Russian scam”.

Curiously enough, the alleged Jewish family was celebrating Western Christmas at the moment the incident happened.

After the tenants threatened to report to police, Ustinova laughed out and said back that “all the local police shares her opinion on Jews and other immigrants”. She eventually left promising “to cut electric wires from the apartment unless it is vacated before the New Year”.

The tenants who asked not to be identified say they are going to sue Ustinova in Nagorny district court for unlawful breaking into their apartment and hate bahaviour.

According to the Russian laws, no person has the right to enter someone else's apartment without the prosecutor's permission.

New Israeli anti-spam law [29 Nov 2008|06:02pm]

ericlklein
Got this from the ISOC newsletter - posting as it was sent

New Israeli anti-spam law
- Contributed by Nehora Dagan-Hess, ISOC Israel Chapter

On 1 December 2008, the new Israeli law for the prevention of spam becomes effective.

The Israeli Chapter of the Internet Society, also referred to as the Israeli Internet Association (ISOC-IL), which acted to promote the law in the Israeli legislature, has opened a special area of its website devoted to the new law and its implications with regard to the recipients of spam, advertisers who are concerned about sending advertisements by email, and parents who want to protect their children from spam.

ISOC-IL believes that the law will give the Israeli public the means to deal with this problem that has been troubling them for years and caused substantial damage to the whole economy. In most cases is not easy to identify or quantify the damage but it is of major  economic significance.

For the recipients of spam, the site gives advice on "what to do and what not to do". In an area intended for advertisers, whoever sends advertisements by email can see whether or not they could be construed as spam.

There is also an area for parents, where tips can be found for dealing with the different types of spam. See:

People who do Miluim will pay 10 NIS for renewing their drivers license [24 Sep 2008|02:02pm]

Got it in the mail:

Highly negative survey on living in Israel: What's your opinion? [10 Sep 2008|01:21pm]

singingnettle
A friend in Tasmania sent me a survey whose upshot is, "Israel is hell and we don't know why we're here." My husband and I are thinking of moving to Israel from the U.S. and we have a lot of concerns: stress, the move itself, adjustment, cost of living, the frenetic lifestyle, the possibility of violence, the disturbing fact of being surrounded by neighbors with whom we don't have diplomatic relations...but do you think this survey is a reflection of reality? It's a phone survey, so I wonder about skewed results because of self-selection--that is, who chooses to take time on the phone to do the survey, people who are happy or people who are dissatisfied? And also, based on my experience of growing up as a Jew in NY, I have an idea that Jews don't tend culturally to express optimism. (I don't know if that's true of Israeli Jews, but when I opined that about American Jews, my non-Jewish husband burst into the sort of laughter you'd expect if you said to someone from Las Vegas, "But doesn't it get a little warm in the summer?")

What say you? If you're an immigrant and knew then what you know now about living in Israel, would you do it again? If you were born there, are you relatively satisfied, or do you dream of leaving?

[27 Jul 2008|11:38pm]

happyduck1979
Hi there,

We are a very soon to be family of olim and are now frantically looking for jobs.  Now that the final countdown is on, we are sort of desperate to find Dh a job. Currently he works in logistics for a telecom company. I am happy to send a copy of his CV to anyone who might be able to help with a job commutable from Ramat Beit shemesh.

Please, we are rather desperate for a source of income. His Hebrew stinks but he is willing (and expecting) to go to a "business ulpan" that meets at night in order to learn. He is a very contentious and diligent worker with experience in business administration, logistics, and telecom costs analysis. He has also created systems to manage efficiently up to 1500 units in constant flux.

If anyone knows of anything that might be even the tiniest lead it would be greatly appreciated if you either let us know or pass on his CV.

Thanks so much for any help you can offer,
HD
