Easter Eggs

[info]navygreen

Easter au naturel.

At the suggestion of [info]greencow, I'm cross-posting this here. I originally first posted this "photo story" in my own journal yesterday.

-----

I colored my eggs naturally yesterday morning. They turned out SO beautifully!

A baby's breath egg in the center

I used onion skins to dye the eggs. The brown, papery skins, and I'd been collecting them from the restaurant I work for during the past two days. I was so excited to make them that I couldn't sleep the night before - I woke up every hour, just counting down the time until I could get up and get started! I made the eggs all by myself, and I had so much fun doing it! I call them my "grown-up eggs" - heehee. :-)

Tons more pictures, plus some how-to instructions. )

MOTHER'S DAY - A NEW TRADITION

Why don't we try something new.

Instead of recognizing anyone on this day with cheesy greeting cards, flowers, and brunch, honor your mothers, your wives, and your friends by giving that money to an organization dedicated to finding a cure for breast cancer. In 2007 alone, more than 200,000 women will be diagnosed with this disease, and it doesn't have to be that way. By putting "mother's day money" not into the pockets of Hallmark, but instead into legitimate research, you can help give all women the greatest gift of all - life.

Hey Jes, I really liked the Rant on the new installment of the magazine.  It was really good, funny, and very true.  Most men are that way.

(I don't have one of those men now and mine loves to help me with the house, but still...)

best mexican dip

this recipe is from my Aunt, and it's always a hit at parties. I've gotten marriage proposals from it before....not kidding!

1 can vegetarian refried beans
1/2 -3/4 can olives
1/2 cup sour cream
1/2 cup mayonaise
3 avocados (mash up to make guacamole and season if desired)
1 packet taco seasoning
plum tomatos
chives/onions
shredded cheese

layer a pan (~ 9" x 13" or similiar size) with:

1. refried beans
2. guacamole (make sure to add lemon juice so the avocados don't go brown)
3. mix together the sour cream, mayonnaise and taco seasoning and layer on top of guac
4. spread shredded cheese
5. add chopped olives, tomatoes, and chives

serve with tortilla chips! so easy!

life-cycles

my peonies peaked over the weekend; the azalias have come and gone. i am waiting for herb, my 5' tall hibiscus tree (that's his name!), to start producing his bright pink blooms, and attracting the hummingbirds. so, too, i await the arrival of the annual purple blooms of the balloon flower plant in the front yard, and the stalky pink blooms of the things i can never remember the name of.

in the herb garden, i had to cut back the rosemary, for it was growing too close to the air conditioner unit. i diverted the condensation run-off from the A/C to constantly trickle water into the herb garden. it works! i have an incalcuable number of chives growing - their purplish blooms dancing in the breeze - and the greek oregano and all my lavender are doubling with size seemingly daily.

this week, i shall transfer the tomato plants outdoors.
