I found this on my pillow, so yeah, I really want to know what it is. Unfortunately, I don't have a very good camera, so I drew a picture of it.
It's very small, about three quarters of an inch, completely black with wings folded over its flat body, a small head with what looks like a probing mouth. I can't find it anywhere in my Audubon bug guide, or online.

Hey all, just joined :)
I've spent about half my life on the beaches of Kent in England. Up until now, I've only ever seen the same sorts of things on them - various species of wrack, periwinkles, cockles, mussels, the odd crab, and that's about it - sand mason worms and dogfish fry in pools were about the most interesting thing I ever saw.
Recently though, I thought of going under the harbour (which is the reason the lighting on some of them's pretty awful - it's quite dark under there) where nobody ever goes in the hope that more fragile organisms may be lurking under there.
I was pretty happy to find some things I'd never seen before:

I found this big spider SOB in a cup that I keep on my fireplace for scooping birdseed. Someone assure me that it's not the spider I think it is. :( If it is, should I be particularly alarmed that I found it inside the house? First time I've ever seen one.
REALLY, really big photo in the link. Dial up beware.
Edit: Yeah...general consensus is that it is in fact a brown recluse. We just had the outside of the house sprayed for bugs, is it possible that's why it came in? I've never seen them inside before and I have to admit I'm a tad worried about it.

11:02 pm - magical multiplying shrimp?

I have a freshwater tank with some happy little fish. I decided to buy a shrimp one day, a rock shrimp according to the store.

I only bought one. There was definitely only one in the bag. For a very long time, I noticed just the one.
Today, I have two. The second one is a little smaller than our original, but definitely not a baby. Maybe an inch long, while the bigger one is around 2 inches.
How did this happen? What's going on? Was it pregnant when we got her? (I can't confirm sex on either of them). Aren't they extremely hard to breed in freshwater tanks? Nothing about this makes any sense to me!
(If there's a better comm. to post this to, please let me know. I was about to go to bed and now I can't sleep until the shrimp-mystery has been solved!)

I found some slugs the other day in the woods and because I am a nerd I brought some home temporarily. I don't have much experience with slugs at all, but having looked at them and done internet research I can only assume they're some kind of mantle slug -but I have no idea regarding specifics. They are very slow and inactive as well as being somewhat large. They were found in southern Virginia hiding in the bark of a rotting tree.

Greetings, inverters =)
Yesterday while rummaging around a dark, moist sprinkler control area, i found a white/clear little fellow - as I do work at a zoo (bird dept), I called the herp department fellow to ask about this little critter. He said molting critters look clear/white for about 24 hrs and then their shells harden and darken. Sooo that was ~30 hrs ago and he's still pale as a ghost. Surely albinos exist, but.. what are the odds? The pics aren't uploaded yet, but I do have some.
Any thoughts? Oh, location for kicks - Abilene, TX
