12:04 pm - Intersex Bashing on Fox Network

queerunity
House is a popular medical drama that can be seen on the Fox Network. The program recently featured a storyline about an intersex child. The terms "shemale" and "freak of nature" were used to make reference to the child. The House character is usually seen as offensive and other characters are disapproving, and while the shows effort to discuss intersex issues is important, this sort of language is unacceptable as it perpetrates misunderstanding and violence against intersex and gender variant people.

Demand that Fox stop bashing sexual and gender minorities, and to provide more positive and accurate depictions of intersex people.

10:13 pm - Hey :)

new_kinda_freak
Hey everyone,

A very happy new year to you all!

My name is Imogen, I live in Cambridge UK. I was born female and am happy with my body but consider my self Gender Queer. I came out as gay at 14 (nearly wrote 144!!) and have been with my partner for a number of years now.

I am a photography student in Cambridge and I am just about to go into the final term of my 3rd year. I have covered quite a few topics over the last three years including self harm, mental health, eating disorders and physical disability. You can see some of my work here: Flickr or my own web site here: Indigo Clouds Photography

This term I want to do a project surrounding 'Gender Queer' and 'Transsexuality'. So I am looking for people who might want to be involved in the project. I will be hoping to photograph a few aspects of the topic including things like: following someone through aspects of their transition, photographing people with their families, following people to Dr's appointments, visiting and photographing both home & work, doing some studio shots (including partners, with/with out make up, in underwear etc) .. For helping me out you would get a copy of your images on a disk, a copy of your favorite 5 printed up to A2 and many many thank yous from me!

Having dealt with subjects that are often unknown to family members or friends I am more than happy for people to remain anonymous. As you can see from my self harm images most participants don't have their face in the images. I would like for some of those who wish to take part to be able to have their face in the images, purely due to the nature of the project.

I don't have any money to pay those who take part but I could help with travel costs if people are on a low income and I am more than happy to provide accommodation in the form of the sofa in my front room!

Please feel free to contact me with questions, anything you might like to know. Also, feel free to pass this post onto friends who might not see it on LJ or even to other communities. I would also like people to take part in a survey that will be part of the final project so if you would like to receive that you can get in touch.

Finally, during previous projects people have contacted me suggesting that aspects of the project might be highlighting the 'wrong' parts of the issues. I warmly welcome this contact and can only understand the subject to a point with out this source of information.

My contact details:

E mail - Imogen.Jo@Gmail.com
Mobile - 0754 99 33 030
LJ - New_Kinda_Freak

Thank you for reading,
Kind Regards,

Imogen May

9:31 pm - cryptorchidism

wearenotsnobs
i'm asking for information from those born with cryptorchidism, or those who simply have knowledge of cryptorchidism.  I was born with bilateral cryptorchidism, which means that i am infertile and at higher risk of prostate cancer.  cryptorchidism is known as an intersex condition.

other than this basic information, and what i have read in my personal hospital scripts, i know nothing and am not sure how or what kind of doctor i should contact for aid.

1:19 pm - Pass the Happieness!

philus
(I know I haven't been here in a LONG time, but I had to pass this on.)

*squee!*

Happy happy again. I was really ill the other day, but it was a really brief bug, whatever it was, and I recovered quickly. I got news yesterday from my love, and it turns out he's become a local celebrity! He has people he's never met before coming up to him and calling him by his forum name (which I'm not using here, so don't ask). And asking him about his work, and can he do a demonstration for their group? ^^ *squeesquee!*

He'll be missed when he comes back here. And there's more; It's well known in the community that he's transgender, and there's huge amounts of support for him "Your so brave to go through with it/I admire you for living as you se yourself. etc."
That surprised even me!

His parents are still trying to ignore the matter, and he's complying with most of thier requests.

I finally found a good book on the subject; "Trangeners and Intersexuals (everything you ever wanted to know but couldn't think of the question)" By Lois May, Foreword by Jeff McMullen.

Just the introductory section told me nearly everything I'd been hunting for! I'm only up to chapter 2 now.

Less than two months to Simon returns, so much to do before he does. *love*

The Gender Public Advocacy Coalition is pleased to announce the release of its 2008 GENIUS Survey in partnership with Ernst & Young. GenderPAC works to ensure that classrooms, communities and workplaces are safe for everyone to learn, grow and succeed.

The Gender Equality National Index for Universities & Schools (GENIUS), GenderPAC’s most recent effort to end discrimination and promote awareness, encourages colleges and universities to recognize the benefits of a GenderSAFE campus - supportive equitable and protective for all students. Choosing to participate in GENUIS sends a strong public statement that bullying or discriminating based on the race, sex or gender of a student, faculty, or staff member is not tolerated at your institution

Fill out the survey at: www.gpac.org/GENIUS2008survey, and make sure that we have data for as many schools as possible. Your voice will help us continue to work towards a safe and welcoming environment for every student

hello, noah here.
i though i ought to provide an update as to my current situation.
hope this is acceptable.  any feedback would be appreciated & taken to heart.

so i'm attending group therapy at Rockingham Memorial here in Harrisonburg for behavioral/mental health...and I just have to say that this is a very scary time for me right now, I'm trying my best to reach a state of self-sufficiency and well being while suffering from emotional turmoil.  I'd like to think that this is the beginning of the healing process for me, rather than a precursor for a self-defeating battle i'll be fighting for the rest of my life.

i've been diagnosed bipolar.  which is not surprising.  i'm doing as much to study the symptoms and what applies most to me and my "condition".  i'm concerned about meds, i'm afraid of what they'll do to me.  i hope that it's a positive reinforcement in terms of my mood.
this is hard to face, knowing that this is something that i'll actually struggle with for the rest of my life, something that probably should have been taken care of a long time ago.

i keep on trying to explain to the doctors that i'm intersex and i've yet to recieve much response,   i believe that gradually i'll be able to explain myself and be heard and not taken for granted.  although i'd rather it be differently, i expect to be called sir or man cos i do look like a sometimes disheveled young man and that's how most people identify me in public.  but i don't really know how the doctors will  respond to a desire to transition.  i often think about being neither male or female, more feminine than masculine, and more than anything a compassionate existential creature.  because i feel this way in my heart and in the movement of my soul, my personality, and more often than not in my body.  so i feel like i ought to explain these feelings to these people now and hope for the best, hope that they know that i am serious about making it in this world and being okay in my body and settled in my mind.

releasetheboi I am a 25 year old female who is most likely intersexed and possible transgender as well. I am at the begining stages.  Most of my life I have felt my body was as best I could explain it - drifting away further than my correct gender expression - at best, and out of my control. I began to think maybe I am transexual but now I still don't know. I am oging to go on T to correct the imbalance my face- my extreme feminized body which brings me great ditsress, makes my uneasy, and I hide it but it never works as I can hardly stand escpecially how pants fit hug or even touch my hips. I sometimes can't stand my voice and I remember making recordings of my voice just talking so I could hear and manipulate my voice. I always was ruff and tumble and when I conformed to 'feminine or female' clothes obviously it was like i was living another life and boy was that confusing. Now, it all makes sense now. The femininization of my figure- the delicate soft smooth look- extreme weight to hip ratio, larger lips but pletniful hair in various locations, large hands and feet, range of my voice, 'deflated' chest, large triceps. My body is feminized yet I am left appearing like a pre pubescent- child...male- because it is like I am underdeveloped in one ay- and overdeveloped in another. Not only this but even worse I have mental imbalance I can't explain but the things are great in amount- from my focusing, my sex drive, to introversion vs extroversion.
My gender identity is male, yet I think for now I am happy being female bodied- no bottom surgery, hormones if not to correct the hormone imbalance, and maybe to masculinize my body further. This is a very delicate and touchy subject for me. So I can be perceived as a very masculine woman even though I am female and with a male gi, if this makes sense. I don't really id as butch am insulted by lesbian and would go with straight woman.

Any comments, advice, support would be great, such as do you beleive I am inter sexed?
Also to point out I have yet to have blood work done- I know my t levels are high, and my therapist  added could have the testes inside...but I really don't know. It is certain hoverer my secondary sex characteristics somehow are a miss but I am not sure how- because I am female i think. I want answers. But before puberty I wonder whether something was wrong.

Disclaimer: I'm not intersexed, just transsexual.

So the public face of intersexed people in the US is ISNA. However, I have recently read some claims that Cheryl Chase and Kiira Triea, the founders, are frauds and that ISNA is a giant hoax.

Double Standards and semi famous names by Sophia Siedlberg

Kiira Triea (Denise Tree) and the "transkids.us" hoax by Andrea James (a non-IS transsexual)

Does anyone have any opinions on this?

Hello; my name's Deb. :O
I'm not intersexed (genderqueer, actually), but I'm writing a persuasive paper on US law in regards to intersexed people.

My main point was going to be "don't perform genital 'reconstructive' surgery until the child is old enough to give informed consent," but the article I'm reading currently is from 2004, at which time, intersexed children had virtually no say at all in the matter.

I've been searching journals and law websites and can't find anything really recent, so: Is this still the case? Because if the law has changed, and children are now able to have a say in the matter, I should probably change my main focus.

Also, if anyone would like to share personal experiences relating to their intersexuality, I would greatly appreciate it, and would be totally willing to use a made-up name in my works cited, if you're uncomfortable with giving out your real name.

Thanks in advance,
-DLC

Hi.

Just a question: How beneficial is psychotherapy for anyone that may have sought or is doing it? I'm beginning today and I'm not sure how aware/informative they will be of/for those who are intersex/transgender. I'm going for a number of reasons and I'm hoping that it's a step in the right direction. I'm just curious and thought this would be a good place to ask for some perspective/insight.

Found the link to this in a friend's journal ( [info]filkertom ), and knew I had to spread the word and share:

Upstate New York High School Forces Girls To Advertise Their Periods

Story link: ]here[

On a personal note... This policy would have gotten me killed, had it been at my high school! I'm from rural Missouri, where the folks are not all that accepting of differences. I am intersexed (which means in this case that I was declared a boy at birth [thankfully, no "corrective" surgery happened], and at age 12 when I had my first period / started developing breasts, I was ordered by family and the school administration [Principal, Vice Principal, Superintendent, and the School Board Members] to not let anyone know! There's more to that struggle, but not pertinent here). So. You think learning to deal with your period is hard, try doing so by having to find a way to change your tampon in the boys' restroom without anyone finding out. In such a rural area, anyone different - even for medical reasons - is "queer" or a "geek" and would have the snot beaten out of them. So no way to sneak the tampons around? I would have quite literally been KILLED. Beaten about the head and shoulders until dead. I had my share of beatings for both being a geek and queer already. This would have put me in the "hunt-the-pansy-down-when-no-one-is-around-after-school-or-at-night" category.

bluebedroom Could someone point me to information regarding how "sex" is labeled on birth certificates of intersex people (and how this might vary by state, country, etc.)?

For example, if a child is "reassigned" a sex through surgery, I'm assuming that sex (either the dichotomous "male" or "female") is listed on the birth certificate. But how is it recorded when surgery is not performed? Our language doesn't have a term for a third "sex" that is widely accepted (the way "male" and "female" are)...so I'm curious as to how this is handled...

And for that matter...driver's licenses, and other documents or forms that ask one to identify "sex."

Hey everyone. I'm actually not intersexed, as far as I know. However, gender identification is *somewhat* related, and I have taken the stance of not identifying as anything. "Agendered" is probably the label that would work, if I had to pick a label. I've been learning a bit about intersexuality as a way to... I don't know, I guess find some solidarity in the fact that gender and sex are not as clear-cut as people want to think they are.

Also, I'm working on writing a book. My main character, Lauren, is intersexed, so that's another reason why I'm learning about it. I feel I need to give an accurate representation, because it seems like other people have written books and not portrayed it very well. So I'm trying to make it as realistic as possible. My character's got classical CAH, and I've looked around on the internet for links and such. I've found enough to know some things about CAH, but I am only in the beginning of my research, and I want to know what it's actually like for people.

So I have some questions. Not just about CAH, but what it's like to be intersexed in general. If this is inappropriate, let me know. I'm not trying to be nosy or anything. That said, on to the questions.

1) What is salt-wasting, and does everyone with classical CAH have it?
2) Do people with classical CAH typically take medication?
3) Do you tell people you're dating, and if so, at what point?
4) How does being intersexed affect your everyday life?

10:23 pm - Looking for information on legal name changes in countries around the globe

jennyemily
Hi,

I'm currently writing a large Wiki portal for the T-VOX Wiki to put together a useful one-stop resource with TS/IS/GQ-relevent legal articles covering things as diverse as employment law, discrimination law, marriage, and name/records changes.

Some of the stuff I have been able to put together from personal knowledge and experience. Other pages have been written by people on T-VOX with specific knowledge, but I am wanting to at the very least be able to list the way to legally change your name in as many countries as possible and build up from there.

Does anyone have any information on legal name/document changes for any countries that currently do not have any information on them on the T-VOX Wiki? I would be looking for information on discrimination law, and employment law too, although that will most likely be more complex to compile.

The 'master contents page' for the legal pages on T-VOX is available here

I would be grateful for any information anyone might have to help me fill in the gaps.

Crossposted.

8:52 pm - Article Help Wanted

nobmouse
Hello.

If this isn't the right community for this kind of request, I will apologise profusely. The reason I'm here is because I help run a website, T-Vox, which is attempting to provide resources and support for Intersex, Genderqueer and Transsexual people. At present we don't have many intersex members and so our ability to provide resources and support is hampered because those members we have don't have the innate knowledge that comes from first-hand experience of the relevant issues.

We're trying to create a couple of articles for our new main page but to do this we really need the help of people with first-hand knowledge. The proposed article titles are I'm Intersexed and My Friend/Relative is Intersexed but these can be changed as needed and other articles created should they be wanted. The idea is to have two main help articles that can tie into the other articles on the wiki (we have a fair few articles on various conditions, medical procedures, chemicals and whatnot) and generally act as a first port of call for intersexed people and their friends/families to go to in order to find which areas of the wiki are most of interest to them.

If anyone would be interested in helping us out with these articles, we would very much appreciate it. As a wiki, T-Vox can be read and/or edited by anyone so if you're interested in helping out, pretty much all you need to do is surf over and start typing.

Thanks for listening, sorry for writing such a long article.

transman57 Hello,

I am a transman and I am working with a graduate student who is collecting some information for a study on how hormones affect emotions.

As transpeople, we have a unique opportunity to help scientists understand the ways that physiology affects behavior, which could eventually help the transcommunity itself.

Will you help us by filling out a short survey? It will take less than three minutes.

Your answers will help us immensely.

Even if you have not started taking any hormones yet, your answers on this survey will help us tremendously.

Because the results of our study depend on the honesty of all participants, we ask you to share as openly and accurately as possible.

The survey can be found HERE

The NY Times Sunday Magazine online has an article about the state of the debate on treatment of infants with intersex conditions, largely framed as an interview with Cheryl Chase.

None of you who are familiar with the sides will find anything new here to speak of, and if you're anything like me you will want to strangle a lot of the clueless people quoted, but I think overall it's not a horrible bit of writing.

I bring it to your attention so that any of you so inclined can fire off letters to the editor of the Times and let them know what you think.

it does exist.

this pisses me off. these people are the scum of the earth and deserve horrible things to happen to them in the most foul ways possible. the only reason this is even in here is because they know they can get away with it.

I(and my company) pay for my insurance just like anybody else, I should have equal coverage just like anybody else. it's just that simple.

I have said before on occasion that although I would like for my surgery to be covered that I do understand the possible negative outcomes of providing surgery. that being said I do not at all agree in any way, shape, or form that it is right, or even moral to deny anyone coverage on this basis. it is discrimination no matter how you phrase it. and even worse is the fact that it gives the insurance company autonomy and complete discretion over what is and what is not related to the trangender clause effectively providing a significant loophole for anyone that wants to deny liability for anything they think even might be related.

wow. i watched house tonite and the episode "skin deep" was on and all i can say is that i was....horrified. i sat and wept uncontrollably at the end of the episode....i haven't seen such a deliberate lack of respect for thos with androgen insensitivity syndrome since the e.r. halloween episode a few years back. i was seriously appalled at the presentation of ais and how the doctors treated the young girl whom had the condition. i think the part that truly did me in was the part where she was informed that she was going to have her balls cut off. i just wanted to get this off my chest. it hurt. alot.

6:44 pm - A little help with an assignment?

_bitterglitter_
Hello everyone!

Pardon the intrusion, but I have to ask for your help. I am doing a project on Turner's Syndrome in my Science of Women's Bodies class. I am required to administer a poll for my project and would really love it if you filled it out.
I will keep all answers screened unless you indicate that it is okay to unscreen your answers. I'll also give you a copy of my paper when I'm done with it if you really want! (That way you can see what I've done with the information I've compliled.) All I'll really be doing is saying stuff like "of the people polled, this many people said that".

I'd also love it if you gave me some suggestions for questions. I'll be polling both people with a little background on the subject as well as average random people. If you have a question you think would be good here, fire away!

Thanks so much.

Questions:

1)M/F?
2)Age?
3)Do you know what Turner's Syndrome is? If yes, please state; if no, take a guess (no googling!)
4)Do you know anyone with Turner's Syndrome?
5)Turner's Syndrome is a:
a-psychological disorder
b-chromosomal/genetic disorder?
c-hormonal disorder?
d-metabolic disorder?
6)T or F? Turner's Syndrome can be cured.
7)T or F? You can tell someone has Turner's Syndrome just by looking at them.
8)T or F? People with Turner's Syndrome can be male or female.
9)T or F? People with Turner's Syndrome cannot reproduce.
10)T or F? Turner's Syndrome usually occurs along with mental/physical retardation.

That's all I have, I don't really know what else to ask, so if you have something interesting to ask please let me know!!!

THANKS SO MUCH!!!

8:31 pm - Just had to say hi
onnineko While wandering by I saw a page from your community and just had to stop by to at least say hi.

I am a very complicated busy active professional and fascinating person who also had the suprise to drink of the fount; that elixir we call xxy. Perhaps this was a gift? If there is a god someone is laughing, and that person might be me. :)

I would be most curious to know of or about a couple of topics others might have experienced?
a) As an xxy person, what type of, quantity of, person physical changes from, and results of personal stability experienced of taking estrogen or estrogen/some additive?

b) Have you tried laser hair removal?

Thankyou for any reply. If these questions are duplicated of some other long discusion, could you please point me in the right direction?

So a bit about me, so you can understand where I'm going, if not coming from. Lately my thoughts are strongly rejecting masculinity, embracing feminity, seeking a balance. I do not see myself as seeking any kind of reversal of sexual gender. For the past many years I have adhered to a demanding strictly masculine environment. And its been slowing shattering, something like a glass window that took a few too many hits, and is beginning to crumble, fall, explode and all in slow motion. I rather liked the comment that .. "life is a stream, and who needs paddles when you can wade up the middle." Someone should tell the writer that as life progresses the stream fills up. Eventually it is incredibly difficult to continue wading against the flow of life. Perhaps thats too harsh. Truly I have found a path, if not peace. I am considering, studying, seeking an endocrinologists input, my doctors input, and looking closely for solutions that relate to additional stability. And I simply cannot forget that abiding requirement of a more feminine appearance.
I am seeking information, little more, and appreciate your kindness to reply. Please accept my regrets in choosing anonimity, those are entirely professional career related.

How does one go about getting tested to see if they are intersexed in any way?
I was talking to my grandmother about how she always thought it was odd that while I was in my mother's womb and during birth, all the heart rate tests and such said I was male. She then watched me growing up and knew.
I'm now going through transition from female-bodied to male. A part of me really doesn't want to know, but I'd like to have information so I can consider it.
If you have info, thanks in advance. --Alex

3:47 am - I have a question:

mysterylodge
I'm in Philly, and wondering if there's anyone out there who knows of a good intersex specialist or endocrinologist in the Philly area that can help me get off of the black-market hormones and onto a prescribed regimen.

I have tried leaving messages for the Mazzoni clinic (sp?) but they have yet to return my calls.

For a variety of reasons, I don't want to go to a psychotherapist and play trans at them for a year until someone can finally examine me.

(I apologize for the poor quality of my English - it's been a long night and I am completely exhausted)

Any help would be excellent. :)
