[info]debunkingoreos. Are you f ing kidding me!! Is it really that bad someone created a community to degrade and ridicule people for being different? Some members in that community find it offensive because someone created a community for people that acknowledge being black and white. Now, that kind of shit is "tragic".

Why is it we deny being black because we acknowledge being both – black and white?

I always thought that community wasn't about being mixed, but about not being the stereotypical black person.

I read a post in there where someone was talking about another community that is for mixed people and they literally were offended by that community. WTF!

people will find anything to be offended about. I try to ignore it.

I mean, geez, there are communities for pro anorexia, pro pedophilia, pro suicide, blah blah blah. I just ignore it and go on with my life. ;)

If I am not 'mixed', then what the [***] am I?

As a person who is 25% Chinese, 25% Amazonian Indian, 50% mix of [Portuguese, Cherokee, Crow, Irish, and Scandanavian] to call me anything but mixed would be a joke.

The single-race world view needs to stop trying to deny reality. 'Racial purity'... Not only a dangerous idea from a humanitariajn point of view, but it's a genetic dead end as well - lowering genetic diversity and increasing population vulnerability (If we must throw 'racism' into the mix, I can use the old 'Eugenics' ideology of 'racial purists' against them thanks to modern science). ;)

Give it a few generations, and we of mixed backgrounds will be the norm in many regions. I look around me on the streets of San Francisco and I see mixed couples everywhere - of all varieties of mixes.

Blacks have no more claim over inter-racial people than any other group, and it amazes me that their political leaders seem to be the ones working hardest to deny all of us exist - regardless of our various origins.

The notion in the black community of trying to claim the black-mixed population as theirs only serves to further uphold certain racist claims against them - it upholds the notion that 'blackness' is a stain, and as a stain, any amount of it ruins you from the 'superior' position of some other category.

By contrast of course - casting out people who are mixed indicates its own form of bias... and comparing these two is a different more complex topic.

There is this other notion that races must 'breed pure to preserve cultural identity' - only if you plan to return to 'the old country' and then lock the gates behind you... Otherwise it's a global world, and isolationist views on any aspect of your life are only going to weaken your status.

The concept of oreos is based on self-hatred. it is people that feel they are black on the outside but white on the inside, and as a result feel that they are better than the average black person because, in reality, they aren't really black.

there are of course varying degrees of this, but that's the basic principle behind it. I just went to the community and looked over a few of the posts, and if you are talking about the post I think you are talking about, I don't think they were attacking the girl for being mixed, but rather attacking the fact that she used the fact that she was mixed (black and white) to justify her rejection of black people, refussal to date black people, and her disgust with black people.

just my two cents.

I'm talking about a different post. Most of the people in oreos are teenagers. How is creating a community to ridicule them is helping? The post I'm talking about has nothing to do with being an oreo.

Wow. So many of the comments in that community are ragingly ignorant and cruel. What a waste of bandwidth.

They have a name like [info]debunkingoreos, but most of the posts are on mixed people... which in reality has NOTHING to do with the phenomenon of the "oreo" - EXCEPT WAIT! Silly me! "Anyone who's even part black is obviously black, because that's how the Almighty White Majority will see them, and NOOOO we didn't invent the one-drop rule but we're damned well going to live by it, because challenging the validity of it is a waste of our precious time which is better put to use making fun of people over the internets!!"

...because it's a privilege to be able to define your own identity. Yeah. The privilege of having two brain cells to rub together.

I notice that. Every other post is about a mixed person.

"You are not special because you speak "correct english", you are not special because you dislike soul food, you are not special because you date outside your race, you are not special because listen to Linkin Park/Radiohead/Coldplay/Green Day, you are not special because you are in/were in AP classes in school, you are not special because you perm your hair, and you are not special because you are not "ghetto".

what this has to do with being mixed?

I've always been amused and dismayed by many mixed people at times.

Some claim one race over the other(Alicia Keyes comes to mind in a passing thought, no pun intended) or others have a semi-superiority complex due to their duality, as it were.

The people who impress me are those who don't even recognize it.

My feelings about that community are pretty much mixed. I mean, on one thing, I agree that there should be people who challenge the hating of a stereotype to avoid self-hatredness. There are some posts, however, that smack on too dramatical for my taste.

There's nothing wrong with acknowledging that you're both black and white, but most of the people in [info]oreos act like being part black is a bad thing and try to cover it up by saying they're 1/129876398756314953946 french dutch native american and martian. That's why [info]debunkingoreos was made. We aren't degrading anyone for being different, hell a lot of the members have the same interests as people in [info]oreos (ie. rock music and what have you) the difference is we don't fall into that black people hate me for it catagory.

Most of those posts have nothing to do with someone being an "oreo". A lot of them are about mixed people. The info page describes someone who think being an "oreo" is better than "whoever". What does being an oreo has to do with being mixed?

I think it's been said in [info]negroclash that [info]oreos was a joke of a community. from what i hear, the members are black but WANT to be "white," dress "white," listen to "white" music, etc. it is, basically, black people who think being black is BAD. so, [info]debunkingoreos was created to undermine those ideas, and to say, hey, black isn't bad. there is no *right* race. it promotes being happy with who you are, and the most important idea is that race doesn't mean you have to act a certain way.
