Tutorial - Prom icon
This is the first real tutorial I have ever done, and the first one I've written for this community.

Those who know me knows that I'm a bit scattered brained, and when you read this tutorial you'll agree.... I do change my mind a lot and I do make a lot of unnecessary steps. But it's just how I work. And I wanted to show you that it's ok to be sort of "all over the place" as long as you're happy with what comes out of it.

Anyway. I hope you will like it.

I'm using Photoshop CS2 for this.

We're gonna go....

LINK TO ORIGINAL SCREENCAP

...I know there's quite a few misspelled words, but...yeah... try to ignore those, m'kay? ;)

Comments are lovely, and so are questions. If you do end up using this I would love to see what you make out of it!

I'm totally exhausted! This tutorial business is hard work.

Didn't you write one of these a while back?

That's ok - I'll do that. I'm trying to get a feel for what tags to use at the moment. When we get this off the ground properly I'm sure the tagging will sort it self out, but for now I want to do it. ;)

Uh... it's in the middle of the night... but I had to play with your tutorial XD

I made a post with two icons at my graphic journal -> http://community.livejournal.com/42_graphics/848.html

Now I have to sleep... immediate...

I have noticed I always, always use selective coloring and color balance to alter my colors, and never actually use filling layers and masks and such. I really have a different way to make icons. But I also don't do a lot of things because I do them wrong xD

Anyway, this is lovely! Thank you Ai, saving it to my memories :-*

*Debbie-smacks your head* There isn't any "wrong way"! You know that!

*smooches you*

Thank you, my sweet.

Btw - did you see that the tutorials I e-mailed you once upon a time are public now? ;)

And any time you want to post a tut, just go ahead. ;)

Ok, then. Let's say there are better ways and worse ways, ok? ;)

*smooches back*

I saw it! I was very jealous at first ;P

Oh, dearness. I have been wanting to make a tut for some time. I can teach nothing when it comes to blending and masking and other v.v.v.v.v. difficult things, but I do feel I have something to say to help out with good colorings for qaf pictures :D

It's just...I never remember to write down the steps I take when I make icons! D:

Just save the psd and then save every layer as an icon. That way you can write it while checking the psd at the same time. ;) *hint hint*

But that way I won't remember the settings I use when I make selective coloring layers, right? I will only know that I have used a selective coloring layer. No?
So I do have to actually take notes while making the icon...:|

If you use adjustment layers (Layer - New Adjustment Layer) you'll be able to go back and check the layer by double clicking the little symbol in your layers pallette. ;) Gotta love Adjustment Layers!

This is a big help there were some parts I didn't understand (before) but now I have a much better idea. I will have a go and post if it "works".
Thanks SO much:)

You're welcome!

If there's anything you don't understand in this one it's totally my fault. Just ask if you get confused.

I would LOVE to see what you can make of it!

Thank you so much for these, sweetie! Layers = best thing since sliced bread.

I tend to forget to use layers with the blending modes, they're usually much simpler than fiddling with the adjustment tools.

I am playing with this same screencap and using some of the techniques that you mentioned. I didn't know how to use the curve option before. I am learning quite a bit. Going off to play again. It is fun when you sort of know what you are doing. *hugs my new favorite teacher*

Here is what I ended up with when I finished. I followed all of your directions with the exception of erasing the spotlight, or adding text. It took me about 8 tries before I was happy with the results.

You must have been reading my mind when you did this one with that cap, because I have a heap from the prom scene I want to work with.
So I pinched some of your ideas and then sort of.....ummmmm....got carried away and added filters and lighting effects and this is what I came up with.
Thanks for this tut it was really good and will use again I know.
