Let's get this show on the road...
Thanks go to [info]sarahtheboring for setting up this community. It would be nice to see some more non-anime animation videos around and discussed.

So, I figured to commend the occasion I'd repost my video using Disney's The Little Mermaid that I created earlier this year. It's kinda anime inspired as it uses the opening theme from the 3rd season of Card Captor Sakura composed by the ever-talented Yoko Kanno and sung by pop sensation Maaya Sakamoto. Far too well written a song for a simple anime theme imo :)

However, those who aren't familiar with said anime need not worry, it's not particularly important - the main link is that 'CCS' is a magical girl show where a girl transforms to something else, has adventures, has cute animal-like sidekick etc etc. I figured it would be fun seeing this Disney movie as being a sort of magical girl story too.

This premiered at Jacon in orlando but missed out on the Best Disney award (apparently because I'd already won the Best Video award for my Gunbuster video... oh well, I'm not complaining).

Final note is that this video has a Japanese song. Now, as the lyrics were essential to the video (it being a character profile) I decided to subtitle it. When I first posted this video I had optional subs as an extra file but people had trouble viewing the subs and couldn't be bothered, which would have lossed a certain amount of meaning. If you really don't want to see the subs, I have put them in a black border outside the video so they are pretty easy to ignore if you want to.

So, without further ado here's the video:

AbsoluteDestiny - Magical Dreamer (45mb divx5)

Ahhh, the framerates! It is to die for! sigh...

I put aside my usual anti-Disney bias (prince, prince, why is it always about the damn prince) and watched this several times. Really you did a nice job with the lyric sync and sense of wonder and all. I suppose some homage to this film is appropriate since it kick started the modern golden age in American animation.

Heh, funny you should say that because this video is somewhat hypocritical for me as the movie (despite being one I enjoy very much and think has some truly wonderful animation and excellent music) contains everything about the Disney fairytale that I don't like and more.

The usual commodity of princesses and the idealised patriarchal system is one thing but in this one you ALSO have this stuck-up 16 year old who "has everything" thinks it's "neat", "wants more" and has the self-righteousness to think that she's representing women's lib when actually she's just being conned into a fairy tale of male hegemony fuelled by the fact that she's a spoiled brat. The ungrateful little cow :)

So yeah, none of that comes across in my video :P

Funny, I thought it worked well without the subtitles (never could get them to work) as a condensation of the movie's story. I didn't even know the lyrics were made use of.

Live and learn.

I'm impressed beyond words. You couldn't have picked a better song, and you couldn't have edited any better. The lyrics were perfect, and I believe the sub-titles added to it, so kudos on that. I only wish you had entered this in the Disney contest. The response would have been through the roof. Wow.... just wow. You're so talented. I came across this by accident looking for pictures of Yoko Kanno.... lol, but I'm glad I found it.

Actually I did enter this in the Disney contest of Jacon but it was way back in 2004 :)

(apparently I would have won too but one of my anime videos had won Best of Show and they figured by winning Best of Show I wouldn't need another award :P)

I'm really glad you liked it, this has become one of my favourite videos.
