Roller Derby and Gaming Don’t Mix [Jun. 6th, 2009|04:28 pm]

Anyone else having this problem?

From I Like It Derby --

I was thinking about how today is the 25th birthday of Tetris, and now I’ve made myself really sad. I just was thinking about how little gaming time I’ve been getting since I started roller derby. I miss my old video games!

I love Final Fantasy, and there are two new FF titles coming out in the next couple of years (XIII and XIV)! I still have to finish XII!

Guild Wars, my favorite MMORPG, has been seriously neglected since the beginning of April. I’m pretty sure the last time I logged on was on April Fool’s Day, when everyone was turned into chibi Gwen. (So cute!)

Question... [Sep. 29th, 2008|04:03 am]

livya_willow
I'm new here, so I haven't had a chance to check the archives for a similar question but...

Does anyone know where one might find knee-high rollerskates? I've always loved rollerskating, as opposed to inline skating, but I've also loved the look and support that knee-high skates give you. I can't seem to find them online even. The only thing I can think to do is to find a good pair of lace-up boots and disassemble a pair of skates to kind of... frankenstein my own.

Suggestions?

::Edit::
I wouldn't be using these for any sort of derby or competitive skating. They're primarily for a costume I'd be using frequently, as well as for simply checking out the benefits. I have bad knees and a bad ankle, so I'm interested in the support.

Also, it should look wicked cool.

Thanks for the ideas, guys, I appreciate it. I'm looking for a decent pair of boots to use, as well as checking around for a skate shop close to my location.

Helping a new girl with her name... [Sep. 28th, 2008|09:08 am]

So...I am helping a striver of ours come up with a name and I am hitting a brick wall!!! I told her to pick a name she would like to be called and we would work from that...like my name is Snide Piper and I love that people call me Piper...and we all know the perils of picking a super clever name only to have it shortened to something that is awful!

So yeah...I am working with "Narn"...or something of the likes...

Any ideas?

WFTDA Releases Minor Rules Update 3.1 [Aug. 12th, 2008|11:09 pm]

From Derby News Network --

WFTDA Releases Minor Rules Update 3.1

The WFTDA released a minor update to the 3.0 ruleset on Monday. Most of the changes in the new 3.1 are small tweaks and clarifications that resolve ambiguities that became clear in the 3.0 shakedown, and will likely be invisible to casual fans. However, there's at least one significant change that will certainly have effects on upcoming bouts.

The single most significant change affects the end of periods -- previously, periods would always end when the period clock expired, leading to many final jams that weren't quite long enough to allow for any scoring. This has been altered in 3.1 -- now, periods end when the last jam reaches its natural conclusion, so that a jam may continue after the period clock has expired. Many leagues use or have used this variation in their local seasons, and it was in effect for the 2007 ECE bouts, but this marks the first time the "natural conclusion" language appears in the official WFTDA rules.

Safety language around blocks with and to the head has been added as well. Any block with initial contact landing above the opponent's shoulders or any block initiated by a player's head is now specifically considered a major penalty.

The logic of the cutting track philosophy has been officially expanded to re-entry from the penalty box. Skaters have always had to return to play at the back of the pack from the box, but previous ambiguity made it unclear as to how severe the penalty would be for failing to do so. New rules here specify that re-entering from the box in front of one pack skater is a minor and in front of more than one is a major -- so an overeager player might find herself going right back to the box if she jumps back in too early!

Bleeding Heartland Squeaks by Derby City, 97-95

BLOOMINGTON, IN -- Bloomington, Indiana’s Bleeding Heartland Rollergirls hosted Louisville Kentucky’s Derby City Rollergirls on their infamously slippery basketball court in Bloomington’s Sportplex [sic] —the same floor where the B-team from regional powerhouse Cincinnati, the Silent Lambs, had gone down to defeat only weeks prior. In a bout that seemed to last minutes, featured a late-game scoring controversy, and culminated in a heart-stopping final score of 97-95, it was not immediately clear who the winner was between these well-matched squads.

Derby City brought their best game--both mentally and physically prepared for the bout with a few new faces on the roster, including jammer Jensurgency (a transfer from River City Rollergirls in Richmond, Virginia), and a new Interim Coach, former speed skating champ Mo’Jo Sensei.  DCRG was eager to bring a little schoolin’ to this sleepy college town on a hot summer night, and everyone walked away with a wealth of experience.

Spectators were extremely vocal all night, reflecting the amazingly close see-saw score, as each team took turns getting as far as 15 points ahead of the other, before turning on the juice and coming back to even the score.  This was a 2 period bout using a hybrid ruleset, which may have put DCRG at an additional disadvantage, but both teams handled the challenge with commitment and tenacity. Bleeding Heartland maintained lead jammer status through most of the first period, with DCRG only finding their stride on the slippery track toward the end of the first.

Meet the Circle City Socialites, Indy's newest belles of the roller derby brawl
by Amy Bartner

In Hollywood, a socialite is a waify blonde who dances on a table in a minidress, clutching a ratlike dog under one arm -- and a male model under the other.

In Indianapolis, a socialite is a brawny sort who glides around a concrete floor in a lime-and-black getup, with knee-highs protecting beefy calves. Her arms are tightly clutched to her body as she shoulder-checks another girl during a bout.

"I think any woman who plays roller derby loves to skate," said Jenny "Megan Enemies" Montgomery, co-founder of Indianapolis' newest roller derby league, the Circle City Socialites. "But for me, one of roller derby's biggest rewards is the feeling of empowerment that comes from getting over that innate fear of falling or getting hurt."

BHRG Slaughter Scouts vs. Rollergirls of Southern Indiana, 7/12/2008 [Jul. 14th, 2008|09:02 pm]

This weekend’s bout, featuring Bloomington’s BHRG Slaughter Scouts vs. Evansville’s Rollergirls of Southern Indiana (ROSI), was a lot of fun. The match was at Swonder Ice Rink, which I remember going to as a kid with my sister (I grew up in Evansville). The game was a blast to witness, and was definitely enhanced by the friendliness and good sportsmanship of both leagues.

The Bleeding Heartland Rollergirls and the Rollergirls of Southern Indiana are considered by some to be “sister leagues,” and have practiced and scrimmaged together. The camaraderie and familiarity certainly didn’t limit the competitive spirit on the track (if anything, it enhanced it), but the attitudes displayed by both teams were encouraging and positive. Some people might prefer to see fights and name-calling, but I preferred the focus on the athleticism and team spirit.

The Slaughter Scouts managed their first win, 62-39, but the women of ROSI certainly did not make it easy for them! The somewhat lopsided score doesn’t fully reflect the skill displayed on both sides, as deft hard-hitting defensive maneuvers from each team kept the number of points scored in each jam relatively low.

At the end of first period the Scouts were only ahead nine points (ROSI 9, Scouts 18); by the end of the second period they’d increased that lead to ROSI 18, Scouts 38. By the end of the third period both teams started looking a little ragged, but that didn’t stop them from duking it out until the last minute, when the Scouts clinched their 23 point victory, giving them their first win after their one-point loss to the Farm Fatales in May.

The after-party at Fast Eddy's was entertaining as well, and it was great to get a chance to mingle with the friendly women of both teams. From all accounts, ROSI was an excellent host for the Slaughter Scouts, and I definitely plan to head back to Evansville to see them play any chance I get.

The Bleeding Heartland Roller Girls’ next bout is Saturday, July 19th, when the BHRG Flatliners play the Derby City Derby Girls of Louisville, KY, at home at the Bloomington Sportplex. ROSI’s next game is an intra-league bout on Saturday, August 9th in Evansville.

Tornado Sirens vs Dixie Derby Girls June 14 bout [Jun. 15th, 2008|11:14 am]

 Hoosier Daddy?

Well, it was a hum dinger of a last home bout for the Tornado Sirens (TS). The theme thorough the evening was evil (Dixie Derby Girls...DDG) vs. good (TS) and a fight to the end it was. I don't believe that there was more than 5 minutes in that entire bout where someone(s) was not in the penalty box. Girls flying around and off the track! This lucky gal even ended up with one in her very own lap! (hehe)

The TS took lead early on, regardless of the bumper car tactics by the DDG. It was a grueling start, but by the end of the first period they were in the lead. Shadi Lane was pulled in for jammer duty and plowed her way through the pack over and over again for massive points!

There was one injury for the evening, sadly, one of the Dixie Derby Girls was injured and after being looked at by our wonderful EMTs there, was eventually wheeled out for a better look-over off site. We all hope she is ok.

The one fight that almost happened was right in front of me and on the last lap of the game. A TS and DDG gal went tumbling down trying to block each other and the DDG gal apparently lost her mind was a bit upset and tried to take a bit of the TS gal's face off with her skate. Luckily she missed and the refs showed up to stop the fight, but not before one of the other TS gals managed to take a swipe at the offending DDS player.

Final score; Tornado Sirens:90, Dixie Derby Girls:54. A hard fought game regardless of the score with kudos all around for the great plays and crazy excitement!

Oh, and for all you guys who missed the break shows, it was Belly Dancers shaking their thing. On the second break, I think that there were mosly guys standing around drooling watching as the Dancers came out in little school girl/sexy goth gal outfits. And yes boys, us girls were laughing at you all......  :)
