Cricketers in India are demi-gods. We worship them when they do well on the field and burn effigies when they fail to perform. For the world outside the perception about our cricketers is different – that cricketers are stars and sometimes arrogant. Controversy over Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi's remark that cricket must replace hockey as national game continues to brew. Pataudi remark draws ire. Also, the fact that the Ministry of Sports has said those who do not hold Indian passports cannot represent the nation anymore continues to draw some flak. ‘My heart is with India, please let it stay that way’

Happy faces, fond memories12/15/08
I saw the post match conference today and it was quite something to see Sachin trying to suppress his smile as he tried to describe how this hundred was special to him. I mean this man has had almost god-like success,.fame and adulation and it was so amazing to see him break into a near childlike grin for finally scoring a century in a major winning effort. His joy at having won the match for the team was equal to, and of the same nature, as that of any Indian who shared the moment. My mind goes back to the 1999 Chennai test against Pakistan which India lost by a mere 12 runs with Sachin scoring 136. I remember I went numb with shock when India lost after making a whale of a comeback in the match. This time Sachin made sure he saw it through to the end and that disaster didn't repeat itself.
And of course noone can forget the contribution of that amazing character called Sehwag who brought this win into the realm of possibility in the first place with his mercurial blitzkrieg yesterday. He surely was the deserved man-of-the-match.
I think this win will bring a smile to the faces of the people of the country who have felt battered after the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.
I saw people on the stands screaming "Sachin... Sachin....". That brought back memories of being in the stadium while Sachin was batting and having done the same ... surely a memory I cherish :)
Amidst all this jubilation, spare a thought for that tireless footsoldier of the Indian team called Rahul Dravid. So many times in the past he has been the only wall standing amongst the ruins when the rest crumbled around him. This time he would be the only one feeling left out as the team celebrates. His form seems to have deserted him; he surely would have liked to have contributed to recent Indian wins. But the consummate team character he is, he surely would still be cherishing the team's success.

Yay we won! Full credit to Sachin and Yuvraj who pulled the rug from underneath England's feet. And of course to Sehwag who made it possible in the first place. England were the favorites to win right till the end of the fourth day. They must be feeling lousy now having lost after declaring their innings. The Mahi magic continues!....
