My studio

Hello, I'm a newbie! I am Nina Margaretha, 19 years old, a French/German student living on the Southwest coast of Finland (Northern Europe) in Turku/Åbo. I live in this 26m2 apartment since I moved on my own in Aug08. It is on the 4th floor of an 80-year-old partly functionalistic partly jugendstil building in the Kupittaa/Kuppis district. I have tried to make my interior decoration details have a link with me as a person. Most furniture and items are second-hand or handmade/adjusted by me.

Photobucket

Picture heavy.

Photobucket
That is the exit or entrance, whichever way you prefer.
It is handy to see from here in the middle of the night if lights in the corridor are on!
The decorations are a sector-sign from the divided Berlin (I am a cold war history nerd nerd), a Paris-themed bag (I first meant to use it for shopping, but it turned out TOO pretty!), and a picture of fireworks because I find them beautiful

Photobucket
That is where I hang my jackets/coats.

Photobucket
The hallway floor. It is the only part of my apartment that has carpet. I don't like having carper there!

Photobucket
You can get a hint of my kitchen already.

Photobucket
Books.

Photobucket
A panorama pic:)

Photobucket

Photobucket
I like that window to my shower up there!
Here it's the European flag (I am engaged in grassroots European citizenship action, and because I hate it that in Finland it is not publicly used along with the Finnish flag (unlike in Italy or many other European countries), I made up for that in my apartment).
Besides, There is what saves us, freedom, and three postcards of Milan, my homecity in Italy (I have bought an excessive amount of them there and not used all.)

Photobucket
My small kitchen.

Photobucket
Products. This is very messy right now, they're all in no order at all!

Photobucket
My highly unpractical sink (I would need two of those deep points!)

Photobucket
Kitchen window. Cyberdog is my beloved favourite clothing line. The curtain is of Marimekko, bought 2nd hand and has been sewn by me. I place a part of my fruit in that box so that I remember to eat it!

Photobucket
Hm, this is too obvious.

Photobucket
As well as is this. (I speak 6 languages in daily life.)

Photobucket
My bed. There are the two owls also. I love owls because they are smart but yet the most beautiful animals there are!
A poster of Airbus... Do I have to explain, as a German-French student? Long live European cooperation.

Photobucket
Another short right above my bed.
A part of my nailpolishes and perfume are lying there.
The poster lists my party's campaigning attitudes. (Ehm, yes, I am in a political party or rather a movement.)

Photobucket
One more poster. I regard thunder as beautiful.
I use that chair as a little night table.
That suitcase is full of clothes I'd need to modify. I dropped 13kg in a year and hence I cannot wear most of my wardrobe from the old era anymore.

Photobucket
One of my clothing closets.
In that skull box I have some computer accessories and rechargers.

Photobucket
Bags in a corner.

Photobucket
My high school graduation pic.
Below, one of those stupid stereotypical articles related to Italy found in a Finnish magazine.

Photobucket
The window in front of my desk.
I love keeping candles everywhere.

Photobucket
View outside. It gets dark at 16.00.

Photobucket
So, here's my desk.

Photobucket
Dining table.

Photobucket
What is above it.

Photobucket
A bird picture of the same table.

I love your kitchen, as tiny and impractical as it may be. Its adorable! I'm also mad jealous of your wood floors, dining table, and elite language skills. :)

Thank you:)
I just hate the sink, for the rest it is okay for the needs of one person.
Jealous of the wood floors? In Finland it is hard to find other than wood floors.
I'm also happy of my language skills but hate elitism;)

Yeah, the sink is kind of terrible, its like a bathroom sink. But I love the little oven and stove top. I would want one if I lived by myself.

I've never had wood floors before. All the apartments / rental houses here are carpet or linoleum. Carpet gets way too dirty, and linoleum is just gross. Haha.

A little elitism is good. Especially when you have such mad skills. 8)

I must check up or ask my dad who does redecorations, what linoleum is...

I would like to know why carpet is so common in the States and in Europe it's common just on... Ferries and in hotels, mostly. Any idea?

Most people are very good at something, for me it's the command of languages, but when I say I hate elitism I mean that I like cooperating also with people who are not on the same level as me in it. And I don't stop paying attention to others who are not on the same skill level. :) Maybe we meant elitism differently.

Ehh, linoleum is pretty much a "plastic tile" Except its not plastic, haha. It's really durable, cheap and easy to clean, so its used a lot in apartments and houses - here at least. It's not too bad, its just annoying and can look really tacky. :/ As for the carpet thing, I really have no idea. But I always thought that was strange for me visiting in Europe and all the houses had wood floors.

I understand. I meant elitism in a good way. As in, your language skills are astounding and I am very very jealous. ;)

You speak SIX languages??! Color me insanely jealous (and super impressed). I am struggling my way through Italian right now. ;( Not so much struggling as that I can't find the discipline to keep going when I should.

I am fluent in six (Fin,swe, ita, fra, ger, eng) and with more struggling can also manage to communicate in Russian and Estonian. Right now I am beginning to learn my boyfriend's language, Dutch.
But my fluency in 6 languages is no miracle, because I simply cannot go through a week without getting into situations where I face them. Blame my friends, uni mates, online mates, university, bilingual city and my past (I have dated many nationalities and Italy is like my 2nd home...) Actually, everything I do in my life has the certain transeuropean dimension. It just is my lifestyle I've opted for.

Nice to see how big 26 m2 can be! I love the blue stripy rug in the 'hall'. Also, your kitchen cabinet reminded me that I still had a box of Lipton Minty Morocco somewhere, and that I want a cup.

Good luck learning Dutch!

It is nice how the blue mat in the 'hall' cost only 2,50€!
That one is my absolute favourite tea, it is just above all other tea types to me. I am damn addicted to it.:)

Thanks! I'm going on a dutch continuation course on the 12th so before that i should study the basics.

Your kitchen (esp the stove) is the most adorable little thing!! I love tiny studio flats, and I also live in one myself, although I am the furthest thing from a decorator (or a neat person in general) that you could find.
I am also very impressed by your fluency in SIX languages!!! That's awesome. I do my best with my mediocre French skills haha. (Ta chambre est trés cool!) I would definitely like to learn German and Italian too though! My dream is to live in Europe one day so maybe it'll happen! For now, I've only been to France and the Netherlands though.

Mais j'arrive à me débrouiller quand même.

Mes classes françaises, ils me manque.

Hope I didn't completely butcher the french language there, I'm so out of practice. I had to look up several words because I couldn't remember the conjugations and things like that.

Your place looks so lovely and cusy. The hob is soo cute. :) I'm fellow owl lover as well.
I'm very impressed/jealous by your language skills. I'm learning german and struggling with chinese. Im curious as to how you learnt. Did you just pick things up from day to day or have lessons or teach yourself or whatever.

Hello! Thank you!
Owls can even turn heir heads around so therefore they are to be respected;)
Good luck with your German!
Back in school I had German lessons for 3 years, English for 10, Swedish for 6, Russian for 2, and French for 2. I never took an Italian class. But I studied constantly on my own and therefore I quite often found myself switching to a more advanced level in some of them. School is not the central place where I learnt my languages, it was more the teaching myself at home and being in company of native speakers. It is VERY hard to describe how I learnt them in fact, because in my personal method I may just run though a beginner's textbook in 2 weeks to learn the basics and then just start reading newspapers and speaking with natives to learn more.
