63 sq ft of a (now converted!) shoebox-jailcell
I posted in here a while ago about decorating a tiny space (7 x 9!) on a budget, and I thought I'd show you guys the results! It is surprisingly hard to take pictures of a tiny room because you can't exactly back up for better views.

Here's the room before:

I was pretty dismayed when I first saw the room, to be honest. Where the door opens - that's the wall (or closet, really). There's no room to the left of the door. The mantra behind decorating small spaces is to "go vertical" but my plans of wall shelves were dashed when I saw the cinderblock.

Anyways,

The first thing I did was to actually Ikea click lock floors over the hideous carpeting. They were really easy to put in, went right over the carpeting, and cost 64 cents a square foot (for once, an upside to minimal square footage!).

I also replaced the ugly closet doors (dark brown, and peeling) with curtains. Also a cheap buy from Ikea.

The wicker chest at the end of my bed is great for storing bulky items like sweatshirts and extra blankets that take up valuable closet space.

Bookshelf:

Desk:

The white box is super convenient for storing little odds and ends that are too messy to hide under the glass.

What I love the most about this desk: hidden storage!

Above the desk area:

That's all!

Wow, this is definitely the best dorm room transformation I've ever seen. I admire the amount of work you put into it.

Also, laptop twins!

very nice! How hard was it to put in the canopy curtains? Did you have to attach a frame to the wall or ceiling?

I actually came up with this system my freshman year of college (when dorms had a super strict no-drilling policy) where I used 3M Mounting Hooks. Basically what you do is face them opposite each other (like one towards the closet and one towards the birds) so the rod doesn't move out of place. I used 3 sets of 2: one near the head of the bed, one near the base, and one in the middle. The rods I used were these super light $7 wood rods from Wal-Mart, so in general if you apply the hooks right they stay for the duration of the year.

I think it would probably be easier to use plant hooks, though. Or a bevy of ceiling mount hooks from hardware stores. I, however, was lazy haha.

GOOD JOB! I'd say there's not much else you could have done with what you were given. I love the mirrors up on the wall!

So what are those floor things? I must know about it. My room at home has the ugliest tiles ever. My parents picked them out for me when I was like 13 and I cried they were so ugly. And they picked them out! I have gotten used to them but it's still horrible.

I would like to know about the floor, too! I don't get how they work -- can you actually use them without taking out the carpet? How do they stay on?

It's from IKEA's Vika system. The legs were $40 apiece, and the table top was $90. Definitely worth the money!

Thanks! It's in Champaign - where the living expense is high and the quality is not.
