| brand new Gel-Sol album! |
[May. 12th, 2008|02:28 pm] |

Gel-Sol - IZ - Psychonavigation Records
"The follow-up album to 'Unifactor', 'IZ' explores new musical territory for Andrew Reichel in the orchestral/ symphonic vein. The listener may detect elements of artists like Stars of the Lid, Global Communication, or The KLF, but the entire experience of 'IZ' is completely original. Guitar loops, mellotron sounds, and lap steel all help enhance the organic nature of the music."
You can purchase IZ online through iTunes, eMusic and Beatport. Visit Upstairs Recordings for all the links.
IZ will be released on CD courtesy of Psychonavigation Records in Dublin.
Review: Since the 2006 release of Andrew Reichel's critically acclaimed 'Unifactor' LP on Canada's Upstairs Recordings label, he's obviously been a busy chap, writing and recording its follow-up, 'IZ'.
The time he's taken to construct this new piece of work has been well worth it - this album doesn't disappoint. The opening title track sets the prevailing ambience perfectly, rising slowly like a golden eagle drifting on the air currents. This blends seamlessly into the second track 'Mourning Wok'; a combination of classic ambient and edgy shoegazer.
'As Far as the Eye Can See' slides into view, and this is the first track on the album to contain steady dub rhythms; the bassline and shimmering ambience collide gently, keeping my head nodding steadily. As the bassline subsides we sink into 'Disco Bay'. This is Eno-esque territory; reminiscent of a favourite comfy sofa, the pads enveloping you like warm cotton wool.
Absolutely sublime.
Crashing waves mark the entrance of 'Bubble in the Sky', coming on like a stoned Harold Budd with the added benefit of lush orchestration, spun out with heavy reverbs and analogue synths, FX burbling and bubbling away throughout. 'Secret Island' wafts in with a wonderfully melancholic chord structure that literally makes the hairs on the back of my neck tingle. This is music from the chasms; a mellow bassline underpinning subtle choral arrangements.
We dive deeper still on 'Raneboze', a mysterious track which sounds like it's been recorded deep underground in a cavernous space, chords left to hang in space. The penultimate track 'Orca' slithers around in the darkness, gradually fading away to nothingness.
And then we're rising again, awakening to meet 'Your Day in the Sun' where an optimistic chord structure brings us back into the light and beyond.
There are a mountain of influences here, ranging from Spacemen 3 and the Cocteau Twins, through to the very best ambient electronica albums that you care to mention. Gel Sol has adapted and fine tuned these influences to create an genuine aural trip that in my opinion is up there with some of the best atmospheric chillout I've ever heard.
Check it out. - Bruce Bickerton

Contemporary psychedelic jazz, live electronics, modern indie rock... call it anything you like! This is Uniquetunes band with a new full-power album on ElectroSound.
Started as quartet, now they are eight and they still play music totally live. All tracks were recorded without using any computers and the result sounds astonishing: full-power psychedelic jazz mixed with adjusted art-rock.

| The Black Dog - Radio Scarecrow (2008 - soma) |
[May. 6th, 2008|02:52 pm] |
|

DJ Magazine - Album Of The Month The Black Dog - Radio Scarecrow - Soma If any one UK outfit was responsible for taking the Detroitian templates and blending — rather than bastardising — their boundaries into something genuinely innovative, then that would be The Black Dog. Remaining as invigorating as ever, visionary early-’90s works like ‘Temple of Transparent Balls’ and ‘Spanners’ might have been tagged ‘intelligent techno’ but their cutting edges bled influences into d&b, ambient and electronica. Now a reshaped trio (Ed Handley and Andy Turner long departed to continue their Plaid project), original member Ken Downie and kindred underground spirits Martin and Richard Dust have spent three years labouring on this latest sonic masterpiece. Beautifully crafted throughout, The Black Dog’s signature mosaic-perfect detailing and deeply complex imagery is at once at work on the uncurling ambient reflection ‘Train By The Autobahn’. Upping the pace, ‘Riphead V9’ is deep techno with enough layers to spend hours lost in, ‘UV Sine’ is a majestic string-laden soar whilst the ambient sci-fi dub dread of ‘Floods V3.9’ and ‘Beep’ permeate the current techno/dubstep boundaries perfectly. But where ‘Radio Scarecrow’’s electronic frequencies truly charm the soul is on measured melodic tracks like ‘Digital Poacher’ and ‘Witches Ov’, where moments of genuine contemplative bliss emerge out of mournful beauty with an intensity not matched by anyone. Never has techno felt quite so human. Allan McGrath Mint track: ‘Witches Ov’ 5 Out Of 5 not my link, I found it :-)

| Alva Noto request |
[Apr. 30th, 2008|08:15 pm] |
I was listening to random music on internet radio, and one of the songs that I heard was by Alva Noto entitled "J". Does anyone have an mp3 of this? I remember listening with headphones, and I could hear the electronics vibrating in my ears. It was incredibly strange, but insanely awesome. :)
In return, here's the last track from Susumu Yokota's "Symbol": Susumu Yokota- Music From the Lake Surface |

| | Astrowind | ] | Musica Excentrica presents:
Astrowind — “Fresh Wind in the Valley of Dreams”
Astrowind might be a slightly ridiculous band name, especially if you consider the fact these two Latvian guys play lush ambient music on Soviet synthesizers. But nevertheless, it’s a good name. An accurate name, at least. Because there is a feel of acroamatic escapism, there are these huge chords of hissing analogue synthesizers and you can even find this special kind of Slavonian melancholia (or Baltic, respectively) people use to rave about. Astrowind bring up a lot of references in their beautiful and, well, obsolete music (text by Swen Swift). This is the full-length album by Astrowind wich leads listener to the world of supernatural reality - the world of blossoming syntesizer-pads and carefully built soundscapes.
