Tutorial-Installing .GRD Gradients into PSP
Hi everyone,
*edited*
I had originally written this for my own icon journal, as my gradients are .GRD files which are for adobe, but they also works in PAint Shop Pro, but found some people did not know how to install them into PSP. I realized that all the info in this community on how to do so were in comments, so I thought maybe this would be of use here, too. I really hope it makes sense, any questions please feel free to ask, and I promise to answer, though I cannot promise I will be right.

One of the most common questions I see around various communities is something like "I downloaded gradients and placed them in my gradient folder in 'My PSP' and they aren't showing up?"

Okies kids, your halfway there, but many don't realize that there are a few more steps to get you on your blending way. So here goes.

Obviously, download your gradients and unzip them first.

1. (a) Go to your materials palette:

(b) And pull up your gradient panel:

2. (a) No, your gradients have not been installed yet, which is why they are not being shown in the above preview panel. Choose any current gradient, even if it's a default one that came with psp. See that button on your gradient panel that says edit? Click it.

(b) This panel will pop up:

Choose the import button as shown.

(c) Yet another pop up window will appear:

Here is where you will locate where you saved your recently downloaded gradients to. Once you have that folder open within this pop up window, highlight the gradient you wish to install. I have chosen the gradient "baby love"(A) which is available at [info]trash_graphics for example.

3. Click the import (B) button and your current selected gradient will now be installed, and should also now show in your list of gradients in the gradient panel.

And...that's it mes amis, I hope it helps.

I do that and the import screen doesn't show any .grd files, or any at all and I did unzip it. I'm using psp7. does that matter?

I tried it too. I can find the file, but I get an error: "There is a problem opening the currently selected gradient file."

Okies Ladies, and please bare with me through this. I am relaying this info as told to me by a friend who is a version 7 user.(am so tempted to get a copy of version 7 myself to satisfy my own curiosity, lol)anywho, She says the following:

"Version 7 does accept .grd formats, and the website I used to learn about gradients in 7 said they should be in .grd formats anyways. The tutorial you have written is basically how it would be done in version 7 so I really can't think of too much more, but I'll ask my groups too, just in case we are both missing something real obvious. The only thing I could suggest at this time is to make sure they are in the correct folder location, as I do that all the time (look in wrong file), but also there is a chance that the file could be corrupt."

Which now leads me to a question, are they my gradients by chance. Am only asking because I would like to know what limitations or problems there are to users just in case. So in the meantime, we're waiting to hear back from "experienced" psp 7 users. Am also going to send this tut and the gradients themselves into a yahoo group that has over 500 members to see if anyone else could help.wow, that was a real long answer, lol.

Hi,
I just wanted to let you know tht I am looking into the best way to answer your question. I use version 8, so it just might be different, but I am asking the one person I know who uses version 7 who will be able to answer this properly. Just wanted to let you know I am on it at the moment, heh.

At first I was trying to change .jpg into .grd and that doesn't work at all. I guess my .jpg gradients are lost causes.
No I don't have any problems. That tutorial worked perfectly once I changed the extension. Thanks so much! You're a dear.

The import only works for separate gradients, not sets. I tried and it doesn't work for my PSP 9. That's why image packs are made for people who can't import gradient sets.

Was wondering if either of you have had any luck, being that newsie nympho (^)had said that the method listed here in this tut is for individual gradients (which is actually what I had written this tut for). I notice alot of people packed their gradients into sets as apposed to individual gradients, and am wondering if this is the common thread that prevents some from having luck with this tut.

What I've been doing is just saving gradients to a folder in the My Pictures folder on my computer and just opening them when I need to.

Actually, they are saved to my gradient file on my PSP but I can't access them through the way you said in the tut. So I just have to open them seperately and copy and paste them onto the icon.

Oiy, I just dont know anymore, lol. It works for some and not even close for others. I had written it for the gradients that I had made in .grd formats, they are individual gradients, and this seem to work for that, but I think this whole entry is starting to enter the world of I just don't know!!!,lol.

hey

do you by any chance know how to convert jpg or png into actual gradients in psp or photoshop? because quite a few people have been asking that, and I'm not sure how to do it myself. A tutorial on that would be GREAT and I will also put it in the memories. that is if you have time of course ^^ <3

Massiel, I do apologise as I never recieved this comment via email. I am only here tonight to reply to someone else. As for your question, just on the off chance it was never answered, no, unfortunately as far as I know it isnt possible to convert them, but they can still be used all the same as a gradient would be (as I am sure you know). I suppose it's why many peeps are finding it just a bit easier to make image packs to prevent much of the confusion.

I cannot explain why it isn't allowing you to unzip the folder, as you are the first to have this problem. Also, which version of psp are you using?

Your tutorial was great, very helpful.

But. I'm using Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7 and everytime I try to import .grd files, it says there was a problem importing the files. Also, when I unzip files, they're unzipped as .jpg or .png and PSP won't allow me to even try importing them ...

Hi there
what we have been able to figure out so far is that when you make psp gradients and export them as .grd files, they are individual files. Meaning if I make it and call it "my green gradient" it will be one green gradient. When you make .grd gradients in photoshop, you can package many gradients together in one file, so "my green gradient" could include like 100 green gradients. Most photoshop gradient makers choose this method.I hope that make sense. Psp cannot read multiple gradients in one file, it can only read single gradient files.
(at least with version 8)

As for the zip files? which zips are you speaking of? Some makers have started making "image packs" and offering them in png and/or jpeg format so that a user of any program can use them. If they are icon sized and you're working on an icon, you can use them just as you would a gradient layer, by just copying it as a new layer.

Meh, i hope i answered somehting for you, lol.

Thank you so much for your help!

My friend also explained to me that I could just use the gradient as another layer. Works just fine.^_*

Thank you again! =D

Hi there....
I am sorry, but there is absolutely no way to convert .jpeg's, .png's, or.gif's into a gradient extensions (either .grd, or .jgd), The reason being should you wish to know, is that true gradients are like vectors...meaning they can work at absolutely any size you need them to. But when a gradient make makes and saves a gradient in say 100x100 size, that is the largest they will work before loosing resolution. You can still use the pngs'a as you would true gradients....as a new layer.
I hope i covered it all, but if not, feel free to keep answering until i do.
cheers.
