soft & pink?
Hey there :] I recently started making icons and I've gotten curious about a certain style I've found.

Does anyone know how to give icons a soft, pink texture? Like the kind [info]edensflowers is known for:

I've noticed [info]stefycarter and [info]parisstar23 sometimes using this kind of look in their icons - especially Disney ones - as well.

I have a hang of the sparkly textures, the exclusion layer, and even the "little red dot" - but I still can't give my icons this soft feeling. I think it might be a selective color thing? D:

I asked the maker who uses GIMP - only its in French, so its not much of a help. I have GIMP but I MUUUUCH prefer Photoshop (I use PS7), so if anyone can tell me how to get this effect with PS I'll be way happy :]

Off topic, but what font did you use in your icon? I've been looking for it.

Thanks.

Something I sometimes use, to similar effect, for a soft look:
- Take the base image; duplicate to the top
- Desaturate, autolevels
- "Gaussian blur" @ 2 or less pixels
- Set the layer to soft light

I hope that might help...? And that really IS a gorgeous effect, mmm. <3

I think that's the right way to acheieve the texture; but I'm still not sure about how to get the light pinky-yellow color.

thanks for helping, though :]

Hmmm... combination of a really, really light pink gradients on "soft light" and a dark blue exclusion layer?

Try... #000050 or so exclusion layer, with #FF6BB4 or so radial gradients? :O *Isn't on her normal computer, or she could probably help you more* Or using a dark pink set to screen...

Or looking at it again, maybe a more vibrant shade of pink, about the shade of the character's hair in your icon. Hmmm.

I don't think the screen works very well. this i what I got with it:

I would have to add a few layers over it or mess with selective coloring to get the pink toned down.

The radial blur looked a lot better:

And after messing w/ saturation and adding a dinky texture, with the radial blue method I got this:

A lot closer than I've gotten before, i think :]

I think I've gotten a sort of similar effect from modifying this tutorial? Try leaving out or lowering the opacity of the yellow colorburn layer.

And this might help make it pink. Then you could use an exclusion layer or a texture or something to make it more muted.

I don't have selective coloring, so I have no idea how helpful these will be. But I hope you figure it out, because those icons are gorgeous! :]

Ok, here's what I got:

the first got me

and the second got me:

I really really like the effect the first one got me (even if it is a bit yellow. i may have to screw around with selective colors a bit more to tone it down, yeah)

I got this starting from your second one:

I'm not sure how close it is to what you're trying to do? But I thought I'd give it a shot.

That first one does look good! Good luck lightening up the yellows. :]

I'm pretty sure that's the right one. :P

Yeah, that's the right softness I want, just the color isn't intesnse enough. You'd have to up the saturation, prolly, or maybe set selective color: red under cyan to -100.

SUPER dark blue exclusion layer under the textures, the softlight layer mentioned above, and the pink dot.

It really is that easy. :)

If you have Photoshop or Painshop Pro, the first icon links to the .psd file you can download. Then, you can see all the layers. But if you really want a full tutorial, I'll see what I can whip up.

Oh, I hadnt noticed that it was link *headdesk* silly me. I'll download the .psd file. It's the same layers that you used for the second icon right? I'll settle with the .psd, but a tutorial would also be very nice, cuz I don't think there are many if not any tutorials for this coloring.

Thnx so much!

Sure thing! I can't really take credit for discovering it, since I have a collection of .psds and actions I fool around with, and that colouring is a combo of a few of them. I'll piece together what In can though.

Okay, I poked around in Photoshop and got this:

Steps I used:

1. Duplicate base, set to screen (multiple times if need be)
2. Dark blue exclusion layer (I used #07235B)
3. Light blue-grey soft light layer (I used #9BCFD7)
4. Select all, copy merged, paste, set to color burn
5. Go back and Gaussian Blur the screen layer(s) - radius 1.9
6. Paste a spotty light texture under the exclusion layer

Hopefully this is close enough to what you wanted. =)

EDIT - I think I also threw a selective coloring layer in there on top of the color burn layer, but it wasn't anything major - upped the blues and greens on the neutrals and increased the magenta and yellow on the red slider.

try to fill your base light pink or beige and set it to multiply(opacity 20%)

I take a close base like in icon 2 and, got this

i take base, duplicate it few times and set to screen, next i make new layer, fill it
with #00295c and set to exclusion. duplicate merged, paste in top, and set to multiply. Next i make a selective color layer to make yellow more yellow, blue more blue etc. next make new layer with soft round brush in raspberry color and set to lighten. Add some light textures. and thats it
