Photoshop CS - Dashed Lines W/ Pentool
How to get this:
http://tinypic.com/i3f1pw.jpg

A tutorial showing you that you don't HAVE to make your "dotted line brushes" look like all the others -- using the pen tool and PhotoShop CS. :)

When Photoshop is open, grab your pen tool. I personally like using the free form pen tool for this, but if you want, you could also use the good ol' pen tool with the point to point method. Anywho. The areas shaded in red are the settings I used.

Open a new image, any size. With your pen tool, start drawing (or clicking) a line in any shape you want. This will create a path as shown.

Click on the type tool and hover over one end of the path. The pointer should change to a type tool icon with a slanted line going through it. Click on your path, and start typing anything like dashes, periods, etc. I usually either press space between every dash, or I set the kerning to 100-200.

Now, once you've done that, click on your Path Selection tool.

Somewhere in the top right corner of photoshop, a little check mark should appear. Click that to dismiss the target path so all that's left is the text you've typed.

You should have something like this.

I wrote this tutorial because I've been seeing tons of those dotted line brushes. I realize that most of the time that's done by just adjusting the spacing in a simple brush. I just wanted some beginners and such to know that you don't always have to have your lines come out just.. dotted. They could be dashed, like the finished product of this tutorial. They can be anything you want.. I personally like doing circles. ;)

fini.

EDIT// I understand that this won't work with PS7. However, you can do something different. Instead of clicking on the type tool after making your path, you can right click and go to "Stroke Path >> Brush".. Of course, beforehand, you'd have to have your brush set to the shape you want and the spacing worked out. \\

Thanks a lot for this. I always made those with Corel Draw as it already has different presets for these dashed lines :)

No *sigh* Doesn't work in PS7.. It has the same Pen Tool settings and everything, but when you use the type tool it just types normally. Oh well.

This looks like an amazing tut though, and is written really well. Wish I had CS now!!

You can also go into the Paths window and stroke the path with a brush (i.e. a default brush), and do even more by messing around in the Brushes window with spacing, color effects, etc.
