ok making these icons isn't hard, but it takes time to arange all the layers...
here goes:
take this base i just made (i've never been so annoyed in my life)
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
now take the type tool and write first letter of the word you want to "say" to someone (font: BM mini, 8pt)
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
copy that text layer as many times as there are letter in what you want to "say to that someone"
i want to say "hey there" so i copy it 8 times...
now resterize that first text layer taht has only one letter
on teh next text layer add another letter, DO NOT MOVE IT, then resterize that too...
and so on till the end of the word/what you want to say
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us ---> Image Hosted by ImageShack.us ---> Image Hosted by ImageShack.us ---> Image Hosted by ImageShack.us ---> Image Hosted by ImageShack.us ---> Image Hosted by ImageShack.us ---> Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

now after doing that, create another text layer and write "me:'whatever you said'"
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

after that create yet another text layer and write "you:'whatever'"
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

ok, so now you're all set to animate it....make sure evrything is on a separate layer DON'T YOU DAAAARE TO MERGE ANYTHING!!!!!
save your pile as a psd, JUST IN CASE
click teh little thingie on the bottom of your tool palette to transfer you image to imageready
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
done?
ok...
so now we're in image ready...
you should have your layer palette and animation opened...
now untick everythign in layer palette cept the first letter and the base
you get this again
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
now in teh animation window click the New Frame thingie
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

now add the second letter, click new frame again...
do that untill you finish all the word layers....and then click new frame again
untick all the word layers, and tick the first line layer the one that says "me:..."
then make another frame and tick the oen that says "you..."
now play it and see if it's ok...
now mine goes a LITTLE too fast
so i change the frame delay, on writing the words 0.2 seconds, on the last letter of the writing 0.5 seconds, and on the me,you frames 0,7 seconds...
of course you can change this as you desire...
here's what i got...
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

i REALLY REALLY hoep this was clear enough...
this is the first tut i made taht has to do with imageready cause i don't like doing tuts in there cause everything seems hard to explain...
if you menaged to get anything from it though lemme see what you got...
ok?
stay creative ppl!

I think that you did a very good job. I make mine with PS and IR as well. The only thing I would add is that you don't *have* to resterize the layers, you can if you want to, it's not a big deal, you still have the same efect. It would just take a few steps out :)

by all means whatever works for you :D

just a suggestion for those who may not want to and may not realize they don't have to.

I think your tut was very well done and easy to understand, which I really like. :)

I believe that's one of the 04b font family.

resterize is to amke the text layer non editable....however like erian said it's not an essential thing here...and i do it just cause i don't want to mess up things...like edit layers i already edited and stuff...

On PSP, you use already rasterized layers, so that step is unnecessary. Unfortunately, it means you can't edit your text layers so you have to delete the text if you wanna change it.

What kinds of file size issues are you seeing with this kind of animation? Like... if I did this and wanted it to say more things, am I likely to run into file size problems? Or are you combatting that a certain way?

not at all..unless you make a 10-minute animation, which i doubt you will...plus there is always optimizing which shrinks the file to a certain size....

Adorable icon.

I've been messing around with video capture software to get a similar "typing" effect, which is fun, too.

Nice tute, thanks!
