Brainstorming, suggestions, and critique for IBARW3
My goals for IBARW3 are to get more participation from other areas of the blogsphere (fandom and non-fandom), more international participation, and more POC participation. I'd also like to see IBARW in other corners of fandom, such as the gaming community, off LJ, the RPF community, etc.

I'm also planning on checking in with the admins of various anti-racist communities to see if I can do a little "IBARW coming up!" post when IBARW3 gets closer.

I was also considering doing a topic for each year (ex. intersectionality for IBARW3); it would be completely voluntary, but may be helpful for some people as a place to start.

I'd love to hear your suggestions and what you thought was helpful this year and what we can do better.

I really liked the del.icio.us, and the way everything was linked and *tagged* in a central location that wasn't just going to scroll away. I would have liked more detailed tagging of posts, to make it easier to find things (and perhaps some distinction of things written for IBARW and other pieces linked from elsewhere), but I do understand that given the context, finding enough time would be tricky indeed!

I found the non-American posts particularly interesting to read; I'm definitely in favour of non-US contributions being encouraged. Not because racism in the US isn't important, because of course it is, but because most of us already have some idea of the issues there. I suspect I know more about racism in the US than I do about racism in my own country! That's something I can fix for myself, of course, but I imagine I'm not the only one. The recent "hidden knowledge" discussions have been enlightening here.

Encouraging links to books and other non-Internet sources might also be good? [info]rydra_wong posted a list of books on relevant issues which I've been working through, and it's been really interesting. I could just go to the relevant section of my library, but I have no idea what is good or informative - recs are really useful for that. And particularly, again, for non-US contexts.

I like the idea of a theme; would you have a list of suggested things-to-post-about within the theme? Because, for instance, "intersectionality" still sounds pretty scary, even if I *do* know more-or-less what it's about.

*flails hands* Basically, I really appreciate IBARW, and the amount of thinking it's made me do. Possibly none of my ideas are practical in the least and/or only reflect my personal interests. Whatever happens, I'll be there reading.

Oh good, I'm glad the delicious is helpful! I think Kate Nepveu has figured out how to get delicious glue working so we can post daily link roundups, so hopefully we'll have that next year too.

Oooh, post suggestions! Yeah, that might be good. Of course all optional, but they would be there for people who weren't sure where to start. I'm thinking if there's a theme, to also have more resources prepared ahead of time for said theme, like expanding a certain section of the IBARW recommended reading post.

Thanks for the input!

Seconding [info]wychwood's love of the del.icio.us tagging! It makes things easy to find and sort through and I really appreciated the effort that went into that.

Perhaps you might consider alternating topical days? For example, Monday-Wednesday-Friday are "topic days" and Tues-Thurs are free for all?

Another thought to consider: most people think of the internet as a text-based medium, but you might consider encouraging pictures, movies clips, sound files (imagine a 'podcast against racism' day!), etc.?

*nods* Good points about the non-textual as well. I think we had a little more of that this year, with people reccing COC-centered vids and posting pictures of hot POC, but we can probably get more.

Thanks!

I can't imagine the admins of anti-racist communities would mind you making an announcement!

I like the idea of a topic (voluntary, yeah).

I think the link lists & LJ community were really helpful--not that I've yet managed to read my way through this year's posts, but it's useful to have them in one place.

I'm kind of surprised that IBARW hasn't by itself spread more out of LJ--is that outsider bloggers still seeing LJ as a place for losers so we're not going to pay attention, etc. etc.?

After I posted in my journal about the Blog Day of Action & how skeptical I am of things like that, I realized that maybe I sounded like I was taking a veiled potshot @ IBARW, but actually I think this is just the sort of thing that the web is made for. It's been really great to see how it's taken off--thank to you & everyone else who work to organize & promote & all that!

Hee! I suspect most of it is my own insecurity ;).

I'm not sure about IBARW outside of LJ. I think it reached a few more places than it did last year (I even saw some on myspace blogs!), but by and large, it's still mostly on LJ. I suspect part of it could be the blog vs. LJ thing, and part of it is inertia.

And no, I didn't take your post that way at all! And thanks for the suggestions.

Topics might be good as a starting point (I myself certainly find it easier to write to some sort of prompt), but they could also be limiting. verstehen's suggestion about themed vs. "free" days seems reasonable.

I tried to spread the word a bit, but most of the people who picked up on it were actually LJ'ers, although I previously hadn't known that about them.

Another interesting bit of fallout from trying to spread the word elsewhere: I discovered that some of the people on my C.J. Cherryh BB (Shejidan)were either POC or married to POC ... and I would not have known this had they not blogged about their experiences during IBARW.

Oh interesting!

Also, hrm, will ponder between themed vs. free days, and suggested topics as prompts and etc.

Thanks for the suggestions and for helping spread the word!

Just to get some of the things we've talked about in the same place as the other suggestions, for convenience:

- An IBARW FAQ
- Solicit "seed" posts on non-US race issues & other topics from bloggers w/existing expertise
- Self-education on non-US race issues & other topics so we can post on those as well (helpful, but not as good as people speaking for themselves)
- Clearer linking/tagging guidelines so people can self-categorize
- Use delicious glue to do a weekly update of IBARW-delicious bookmarked posts to the community during the rest of the year

Yes to the FAQ and the "seed" posts. I really need to do something on me and TCKness and etc.

And yeah, I think next year the linking/tagging guidelines should be in the FAQ and there'll be a post up for people to change their tags earlier on.

a link of interest?

This is probably off-topic, but I was struck by it and thought some people here might be interested.

I just came across this page (Books to Avoid) while doing some searches about children's books. It's part of a very interesting site, Oyate: "Oyate is a Native organization working to see that our lives and histories are portrayed honestly, and so that all people will know our stories belong to us. For Indian children, it is as important as it has ever been for them to know who they are and what they come from. For all children, it is time to know and acknowledge the truths of history."

That's a great site. In the same vein, Debbie Reese, a Nambe Pueblo woman, has a very good blog critiquing depictions of American Indians in children's literature.

Flyers for WisCon, perhaps? Especially for the unofficial, totally-not-WisCon-sponsored POC spaces?

Yeees! Haha, what actually got me kickstarted was Mely wanting to make flyers specifically for WisCon... I think she is drafting up a post to ask for ideas for slogans and/or graphic design, though if you have any ideas, please let me know!

I sort of suck at that whole pithy and catchy thing...

Oh, awesome!! Alas, I have neither graphic design skills nor a talent for the pithy & catchy. If I did the flyer it would be long as a phone book. ;)

I remember throwing a desire for 'ethinicity as racism' as a theme at you during the yuletide madness chat, and I wonder if some modification of that might not work to create a more fertile theme for non-US centric discussion. Problems that equate with racism in the US go by other names in other countries, and it would be nice to have, for instance, Pakistanis writing for Pakistanis, instead of us always presuming a US-based audience. But of course, theme or no theme, the main way to do this is to increase the number of non US bloggers participating...

I have some thinky thoughts, if I have any more concrete suggestions, I will post.

Thanks for organising this again!

Oh huh... I don't think I was on the Yuletide madness chat? Do you mind elaborating on the theme?

But yeah, I really want to not have the US-based audience presumption in more posts and more non-US bloggers participating! Any ideas or thoughts or suggestions very welcome!

Hey there!

What are the rules/guidelines here? I write a lot about racism/anti-racism on my blog (though it's certainly not the only thing I write about). I'd love to link to those posts from ibarw, as I've seen other folks do, but I'm not sure as to the hows and the wherefores.

Are there any guidelines about what's okay and not okay to link to ibarw (via LJ's comments, via del.icio.us, etc.)? Is it mostly a datewise thing, or is it just that you need the posts to be against racism?

Any guidelines you have or can point me to would be awesome. Also I'm not entirely sure I'm doing the del.icio.us bookmarking/sending to ibarw properly, but I THINK I am. Are there any guidelines about that?

Thak you very much in advance!

Honestly, there aren't really any rules. I've got a few people out there who're making link compilations to old posts, so that totally works! Mostly I don't link to older posts b/c of the date thing and I don't want to appropriate posts for IBARW that weren't meant for it, but if you want me or any of the other compilers to link to them, just stick them in del.icio.us or in the comments to the link compilation posts.

And I see the post you sent via delicious, so you're definitely doing it right! Hope this helps!

Cool. Thank you.

I will write up a compilation post and del.icio.us-link that post to ibarw. I am assuming I don't have to twice-link it (i.e. here and in del.icio.us), so I'll just depend on the del.icio.us method.

Thank you for verifying you see it!
