AboutThis community is not for everyone.
This is a forum for fully-manual black and white photographers.
Anyone with an active appreciation of black and white photography, in all its many facets, is welcome here. Anyone with black and white work they are proud of is welcome here.
This community was created for those who still view good photography as something that is LEARNED, something that takes time and devotion - something that deserves to be respected.
In this community, you will not see photographs of half-naked cam people winking at you. You will not see photos of "the homies giving a shout-out at the new year's eve bash". You will not see snapshots of my sister's butt at the beach.
You will see photographs that were painstakingly created by someone who knew what they were doing.
These days, anyone can pick up a camera and make pretty pictures. This community is for those who refuse to be satisfied with that. This community is for those who are not content to simply press the shutter release and allow the camera to do all the thinking for them. This community is for those who understand and appreciate that making a fine photograph can take hours, days, weeks, months, or even years. This community is for those who are enthralled by the magic of light meeting silver-halide particles, chemicals meeting emulsion, time and light meeting paper... This community is for those who previsualize and then bend reality to their will. This community is for those who control their work.
If this interests you, join us. You do not need an art degree to belong here. You do not need to be a darkroom expert, although that would be nice. You do not need to prove anything.
There are some simple recommendations:
- Please share your techniques with us.
- Please give us tips on exposure and processing.
- Please tell us about used equipment you have for sale.
- Please let us know if you see an online auction for gear, or come across a site with good deals.
- Please feel free to show your work, and please provide technical specs when you do so.*
- Please - no digital. While we respect digital as an art form, this community is about film and chemicals and time and labor.
- Above all, please be a Human Being. If you understand what this means, you will be appreciated here.
*Please exercise a sense of what is appropriate. Feel free to post pictures, but please be mindful of bandwidth limitations when doing so; if your pictures are large files, have the courtesy to give us a link to your work or use the lj-cut tag. This will reduce page-loading time for the whole community.
