River has started with the pulling! She was doing well on the lead but I think she's entering her "I'mma ignore you now" stage. Any recommendations on correcting this? Heel isn't working that well anymore :)

Any good harnesses, head-halters, etc, that are good for huskies, safe, and recommended?

Thanks all :)

ETA: Oh, I also meant to ask, if anyone has any recommendations on toys that are good for dogs that like to destroy them! River murders them in minutes. She pulls them to the very back of her mouth and grinds down, chewing, sawing the material in half! She also won't play with any of the rubber type toys (Kongs, etc) even with something like peanut butter. She'll just lick at it - no chewing on it.

Hi there. This is [info]angeltabris. My subscription expired so I decided to make a new LJ, and of course I had to encorporate River. :)

I must show off what my friend drew for me of River.

Under da cut. )

River went on her first walk last night since her spay, she looooved it. Her incision is healing great! Won't go to the dog park again for a couple more days though.

Hope everyone and their huskies are doing well. :) I wish people would post more pictures, I just love seeing them!

Hot dogs! [11 Jul 2009|06:25pm]

It hit 99 degrees today and our girls had just had enough. So I wet two dish towels and laid them over the dogs' backs - Luci hates water, will not go near it other than to drink, but she didn't budge when we put the towel on her. I think she really, really enjoyed being cool:

And here's our other girl... )

Stinky Husky :) [08 Jul 2009|10:28pm]

My husky - Tyler - smells.. :)

We moved from CO to OKC two years ago today. We spent a lot of time out side, swimming in the lakes/rivers...in CO and I think I may have given Tyler a bath...once a year if that. He just never smelled.

BUT....

Ever since moving to OKC he stinks in the summer! Winter is fine, no problem but in the summer I could give him a bath with fancy no smell shampoo and he'll stink with in 2-3 days (without any dog park or swimming in the lake). I wonder if it has something to do with the humidity and his fur? His fur hasn't yet figured out what it is doing...and he is blowing his coat at random times. He smells sour....like if you ever left a load of towels in the washer and forgot about them...that kinda of sour. I let him go as long as I can before giving him a bath. The vet checked him out and it isn't anal glands or anything like that. He is an inside apt dog..so he doesn't spend his days outside in the weather.

Has anyone heard/experienced this before?

River is much better. You'd never guess she was spayed yesterday... I think keeping her from jumping is nearly impossible, but I'm doing what I can!

On another topic, does anyone use one of those beds that's supposed to be cool or cold, for their husky? Or anything like them? River REALLY liked that Chilly Bone, so much that she layed on it, and I thought that it'd be a nice present for her to get her one of those beds when I have extra moolah - but I'd like to know if anyone else uses one successfully, or if their husky just ignores it.

Thanks :)

I hope you all enjoy the holiday... and if you're not in the US, then I hope you have a very nice Saturday. ;)

The Vader certainly enjoyed our pre-4th celebration, though he got more sniffs of the fruit torte than actual lickies...

Who else likes fruit? [25 Jun 2009|02:22pm]

nienna_nineve
I'm just wondering if anyone else has a husky who loves fruit or salad.

Little Vade used to like the kind of food you'd expect a dog to like: meat and bread and cheese. But now, as a senior husky, he's suddenly discovered the joys of fresh fruit.

He begs for apples and tangerines, and he especially likes persimmons. If you offered him a persimmon and a nice, rare steak at the same time, I do believe he'd have to sit down and have a very long think!

His uncle, Toklat, used to graze on grass and berries even when he was a puppy, but Vader didn't start to do so until about a year after our older dog passed away. He doesn't seem to have learned these tastes from Toklat at all. I'm wondering if it's partly a consequence of his phenobarbital; I know these meds can stimulate appetite, so maybe he was spurred into trying foods he wouldn't have thought of otherwise and then discovered that "Hey, I really LIKE this!!"

Whatever the reason, it's fun to see him dance when we open the fruit drawer.

Spay [23 Jun 2009|01:24pm]

angeltabris
So it's almost that time for River... she's about 5 months old and will need to be spayed in the next month or so.

Now, I've had dogs all my life, but I've only ever had one other female dog, who was spayed shortly after we adopted her from the shelter when she was pretty young (couple months). Besides, she was more my mom's dog than mine. And for male dogs it's such a simple "snip snip" procedure that I never worried about them.

Well, River is pretty much my daughter, and I'm feeling overprotective of her. I'm afraid of all the bad things that might happen (yes it's a simple procedure, but there's always that chance! And I tend to have bad luck). My vet is awesome and uses advanced lasers for surgeries, but I'm still paranoid and am afraid to subject her to the pain of the surgery, and annoyance of an E-collar (not to mention shaving her pretty belly-fur..)

Don't get me wrong... it's going to be done. But I have anxiety about it already!

How long does it take for a spay to heal, generally? Any stories/experiences you'd like to share about spaying your husky? What age did you have it done?

Introductions! [21 Jun 2009|06:03pm]

[ mood | energetic ]

Hi there! I'm new and I've been watchin' the community for a couple weeks. I've been waiting anxiously to get my own husky for the last 4 years! I'm a college student, and I'm finally done with classes; I start an internship in September -- 12 month long with a regular schedule. At last! The regular schedule allows me to finally get the dog of my dreams. His name is Jenks, and I get to bring him home in August!

I live in Austin, TX, USA -- a city that is extremely dog friendly, a fact that has helped me decide to get this dog despite that I am an apartment-dweller. There are literally hundreds of places for us to go spend our time together. Many of my friends have dogs [and yards!] -- we'll have plenty of play-dates as Jenks grows. My apartment complex is large-dog-friendly so Jenks will be right at home... I've met many dog-owner's in my neighborhood and everyone seems quite friendly. I'm so excited!

I have a very playful cat named Figaro -- I'm hoping the two will hit it off after just a few weeks since I'm bringing Jenks home while he's still young. Have any of you had serious problems introducing your pups to cats?

This is my favourite photo of Vader ever...

Oh, that face. The Vade has a special gift for saying "What'd I do?" and "Oh no, she knows I did it!" and "I didn't do it!" all at the same time!
