Who's side are you on anyway?

Who’s side are you on anyway?
 				December 21, 2007

The housing situation in Louisiana must’ve peaked someone’s interest in the news recently. This is beyond riot time. Two years or less in a FEMA trailer demands attention. Two years plus living away from “home” demands much more media attention. The fact remains that there was a big issue with housing prior to Katrina. So what. No one gave a damn. Now its news because its a “Katrina” story.

The issue that I have with recent events is that as a Katrina Victim I’m still labeled a Katrina Victim. In other words, local school district has put me into a demographic catagory called “Hurricane Katrina”. Yeah, big of them wasn’t it? That’s what I discovered this week. I’m pissed off! Instead of what type of dwelling my children and I live in..apt. house, duplex, etc. I get “Hurricane Katrina”. Yeah! My label under the “type of dwelling catagory” ~ Hurricane Katrina. No kidding folks. Nice of them. Just what exactly do they intend by putting me in this catagory? Are we special?

Really, this is how special we are here. The Urban League sent me a letter last week saying that there was a deadline Nov. I missed. In fact, they addressed me as “Hi, new neighbor”. I’d like to slam the SOB’s upside the head and tell them off! The letter went on to say that there was a deadline ( in three days ) for another program they were offering for Christmas. These a******* first contacted me in March or so of 2007 to let me know they were offering “assistance”. In other words, jump through our hoops so that you can wait further, we can decide whether or not you DESERVE our help and we can keep harassing you in the ure. These people suck! These organizations accepted FEDERAL FUNDING from FEMA and others to assist “Hurrican Katrina VIctims” ~ at their leisure, and at Victims expense. Instead of getting assistance to those who requested it at the time of the crisis, government authorities decided the best way to handle the issue was to outsource to these charitable ( ha ha ha) organizations ( ha ha ha). The Urban Legaue. I have a brand new taste in my mouth for them. PUKE. These big shots are getting a paycheck everytime they send me a letter. I asked them how they received my info back in March and to please remove it. They couldn’t give me a phone number for local people in Louisiana to call to gain assistance, at the time. These agencies rival the other non-profits who don’t really have to give back 100% of their funding. They can pocket all but 3% and say they did their job. Meanwhile, people in New Orleans and elsewhere in Louisiana - are homeless. Meanwhile, I’m still not home.

OH! And another thing. There is supposed to be a Katrina Memorial at Charity Hospital Cemetery for those who perished in the hurricane. The Earth Institute at Columbia University headed by John Mutter, jmutter@ei.columbia.edu - this project has some posts in details that are really disrespectful. “Drowned, duh.” for davis, taylor who was 79 female is way outta line. Columbia needs to address the issue PRONTO.

Posted in Accountability?, Clueless Katrina Comments, Corruption, Demolitions, Disaster, Displaced, Housing, Houston, Hurricane, Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Recovery, Katrina Evictions, Katrina bashing, Louisiana, Media, Media Oversight, Mississippi, New Orleans, News, Social Justice, TV, Urban League, WDSU-Affiliates-Suck, WDSU-TV, evacuee, negligence

Who is Katrina bashing, California?

Who is Katrina bashing, California?

I should be upset about the recent comparisons of the California, San Diego fires to hurricane Katrina. The media would like to take every opportunity to degrade the state of Louisiana and what happened during Katrina. The fact of the matter IS California is one of the richest states in the Union if NOT THE RICHEST state in the United States. Louisiana is rural. It’s largest city is New Orleans. Comparisons between Louisiana and California should be limited to Hollywood fantasy. . They quite simply cannot be made legitimately. Why the media has chosen to bash Louisiana again for hurricane Katrina, I do not know. These media types have been struggling for news stories, have forged journalistic credentials, and are typically dense and careless with their reporting. Of course California would have better emergency planning than Louisiana. They have more money. Those reporting comparitively should be required to donate their personal time in helping rebuild in Mississippi and Louisiana. As for those families in California who have lost everything - they have my condolences.

This post goes into the Clueless Katrina comments file.

And a new catagory - Katrina bashing.

 		 				Posted in <a href="http://wordpress.com/tag/associated-press/"
I am a graduate student trying to put together a presentation on Plum Orchard, a neighborhood in New Orleans East. The focus is the culture, daily life, neighborhood festivals, history, and heritage of the inhabitants. I am trying to form a cohesive picture of the area and why it is a place that is important to the whole of New Orleans. This study, although only a small portion, is part of a grant through HUD and Acorn to assist in the restoration of the area and maintaining its residential character. If you have any information or know where I might locate some, considering that I am in New York City, please share it with me. Thank you for your time.

Benefit Information

There has been some confusion regarding the benefit for Kevin Thomas of NOPD. I have been in contact with one of the coordinators of the benefit. I would also like to add that this is not the Officer who was shot this last spring. That was Officer Andres Gonzalez (if you still wish to assist him you may contact me and I will give you information.) During the past year with everything that we have all been going through Kevin, his family and friends seemingly slipped through the cracks. Hopefully this is the begining of pulling him back up and through with the rest of us.

Below is information regarding Officer Kevin Thomas of NOPD who was shot in the line of duty DURING Katrina. Kevin has suffered critical injuries that will require years of treatment. Please do what you can to help assist him and his family. I can tell you it will be greatly appreciated by all.

Injured NOPD officer benefit
Officer Kevin Thomas, who worked in the 4th District of the New Orleans Police Department, was shot in the head, point blank range, while trying to stop looters in a Chevron Gas Station during Hurricane Katrina. There is a myspace page for him, showing benefit information. Send a friend request to this page, http://www.myspace.com/kthomasbenefit and help spread the word about his benefit. The benefit is at the House of Blues on Sept 12. Tickets are $23 in advance and $25 at the door, with proceeds going to Kevin.
Thanks, Matt NOPD (ed.)

BENEFIT FOR KEVIN THOMAS
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12th DOORS OPEN AT 7:00pm
SHOW BEGINS AT 8:00pm
Age:18+ w/id
House of Blues New Orleans
225 Decatur St.
New Orleans, LA 70130
504.310.4999

PERFORMING:
Kermit Ruffins, The Garden District, Stanton Moore Trio, Fred LeBlanc ,DJ Captain Charles and others.

Day 296, part III: New Orleans Filmmakers Document a City Worth Rebuilding;

Collaborative Local Filmmaking Effort to Present Duality of Life in Post-Katrina New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS — In a new approach to telling stories from the front lines of post-Katrina New Orleans, the New Orleans Video Access Center (NOVAC) has collaborated with local filmmakers to produce a series of short documentaries on the people, culture and spirit that make New Orleans an American city worth rebuilding. In addition, NOVAC is producing a one-hour documentary called The Drive. It’s an extensive driving tour through four of New Orleans’ most devastated neighborhoods supported with maps, interviews, and an original score by Emmy nominated composer, Gil Talmi (http://www.giltalmi.com/ ).

“A painful irony is how few people throughout the country understand the extent of what has happened to New Orleans. In many respects, things are progressing. Families are moving home, cultural activities are abundant and, in some neighborhoods, life has a sense of near normalcy; however, a short drive in almost any direction provides a
different picture. The magnitude of flooding was incomprehensible and nearly 10 months later, New Orleans has many challenges to overcome. We hope that this project conveys the duality of life in post-Katrina New Orleans and presents New Orleans as a city worth rebuilding,” says Tim Ryan, NOVAC director/producer.

The documentaries are available for free viewing on YouTube.com -
http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=8080681AD2517F7E (keyword:
NOVACDOC).

The entire series is also available on DVD at cost ($4.75 + shipping)
through a partnership with Customflix.com - http://www.customflix.com/210796 .

In addition, FriendsofNewOrleans.org - http://www.friendsofneworleans.org/ - a non-profit devoted to the rebuilding of New Orleans, features a trailer of The Drive on their website.

The project is funded by the Greater New Orleans Foundation; Newman’s Own Foundation; The RosaMary Foundation; Matt, Suzanne, Andy and Betty Wisdom; Cambridge Community Television; and other private funders. NOVAC continues to accept tax-deductible donations to support ongoing production.

For more information and links to view project, visit http://www.novacvideo.org/

Remove Vitter NOW

http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/06/06/same.sex.marriage/index.html
CNN.com - Senate set to reject gay marriage ban - Jun 6, 2006 “I don’t believe there’s any issue that’s more important than this one,” said Sen. David Vitter, a Louisiana Republican.

Okay, now you have gone too far. ( Thanks to Peter Dubuque for pointing this out in his comment on my Vitter’s Vitriol post) As we sit amidst the rubble hoping not to get blown to kingdom come by this years hurricane season our most pressing worry is certainly gay marriage!

I’m sorry but this is beyond the pale. The fact that I find him to be a jackass notwithstanding, that comment alone is cause for a recall. Are we really going to tolerate this sanctimonious and self impressed fool to continue to hold office? Category Five Levee Protection! Now! To hell with the homophobia, there won’t be anyone (straight or gay) around to argue it if we all get washed away!

Contact him, tell him what you think is important.

EDIT: Here is the text I just sent him through his website’s form:

Dear David,

your comments to CNN (http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/06/06/same.sex.marriage/index.html) “I don’t believe there’s any issue that’s more important than this one,” were absolutely out of bounds. When New Orleans and it’s environs are devastated you cannot think of anything more important than your own homophobia? You should either step down or seriously reconsider your priorities.

You shouldn’t have to be told this, you grew up here. I know, we graduated togetehr at De La Salle back in ‘85. To show the mammoth disdain for your home required in making that statement is indicative of a disdain for your constituency that is unconscionable.

You were under intelligent in High School, but you have become a fool of the greatest caliber as an adult.

Resign,
George “Loki” Williams

Transmissions From The Humid City

Well, you heard it here first: Humid City is starting a New Orleans collumn on http://www.powersandmorrison.com This collumn will be launching in about a week and will draw upon input provided here in the LJ community and the discussion we hope to genereate here.

This will be a voice out of the wilderness of modern New Orleans. People in the rest of the US have forgotten us to a large extent (short attention span theater) and we need to get the realities of the situation across. We need to make sure that the truth gets out there where people can access it.

Please feel free to post ideas for the collumn here, and rest assured that I will not quote anyone without giving proper credit. We are a community and we now have a community voice, get involved and be heard!

Once the url for the collumn is finalized I will post it here and on the other Humid City sites.

Renew. Rebuild. Revive. Reconnect.
Hold The Corps Accountable!

After spending the greater part of the last half hour fumbling through various texts and pamphlets I have scattered across the floor of my room, I've decided to ask for your help.

I'm looking for any useful statistics that might indicate the importance of New Orleans (and southeast Louisiana) to the country. In particular, I'm looking for statistics on imports and oil. I'd especially like to find the exact number of the Louisiana citizens that work on the rigs offshore. However, any other statistics you might be able to offer that would aid in the defense of our city/state would be greatly appreciated.

Please don't forget to cite your sources.

It's sad that I have to defend the city's right to exist, but some senators don't seem to be getting the message.

Thanks for your help.

Also, does anyone know of any problems other parishes are having with the Corp of Engineers? St. Charles Parish seems to be having some difficulties pushing the Corp into making a decision about the new levee placement.

The Die Is Cast

Well we all know which way the cookie crumbles now. C Ray, C Ray Run, Run C Ray Run. And he did. While this is all fresh in everyone's minds I would love to hear your opinions on the subject. No matter which bald man got it we knew we were in for ridicule on the national level. If Mitch had taken it we would be excoriated for years and held up as a gross example of the disenfranchisement of African Americans in the modern age. Ray's win means we will be labeled as having a racist and irrational mayor who is ripe fodder for SNL, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, and neocon pundits galore. Please chime in, this is a baby community mere days old and I think this is a good discussion to kick off with. For myself I did not like either of them, I voted for Mitch because I think that Ray has become to mmuch of a buffoon in the eyes of America and we do not need that as we rely on the (mostly useless) federal govternment for assistance. I'm looking forward to your comments!

Air America

It looks like Humid City may be getting used as a major part of an upcoming Air America show about the state of New Orleans at the begining of the first Post K Hurricane Season (tm). What things would the community like me to try to address if this comes through?

Notice: Our first Friday Music Blast just went up at Humid City v2.3 and features Trombone Shorty.

Friday Music Blast is brought to you by Humid City on MySpace
