Contest poll for Week 8!

  • Jan. 28th, 2008 at 2:13 AM
I have done my duty by (painfully...) whittling this week's wonderful entries down to four finalists. It was difficult--as always, you guys have come up with some absolutely spectacular stories. You must now do your duty and vote for the one you like the best!

You all have til Monday night to vote!

Poll #1128533
Open to: All, detailed results viewable to: All

Who would you like to see as the winner for Week 8 -- Career?

View Answers

shaze
22 (5.8%)

mintxcore
149 (39.3%)

shuckiduck
166 (43.8%)

dragon_pet
42 (11.1%)

Edit: The voting is closed. To those who see what I am seeing regarding the number of votes, please rest assured that I have given The Powers That Be all of the information they need to come to a conclusion about who the real winner is. This one is out of my hands.

It's always so much fun to play during the week...then you have to vote..ugh. Who to pick? Good luck to them all!

I find it very bemusing that the ones that have been chatting about the ways to garnish votes for the two in the lead would be the ones to point out how ridiculous this is getting on the voting.

I've been refreshing the thing here all day and as fast as I can refresh it there are new votes on the two leaders.

Makes me feel really bad for anyone without a huge friends list to drag in votes from. I even saw one fellow admit he ain't used LJ in a long time (mid 2006) and only voted because he was asked to. :-/ Makes me wonder how many of the voters actually had LJ accounts this morning?

I agree with Mintxcore, is there a way to make this more fair to people that are not able to have 500+ friends culling in votes? This is too cool of a prize to let it go to the one with the highest level of friends and community connections to drag in here to vote.

Well, if there *was* rampant fake account voting and whatnot, it's not as if the judges don't have the necessary tools to investigate -- if warranted :)

Yeah, the irony, right? I don't deny that I've been excited for the people I know who are in the top 4, but it has gotten insanely out of hand. Hopefully, if HP does this again, the judging will be based on quality instead of vote-getting.
[info]phantascene wrote:

Shoot, I been excited for the folks I know that have made it, including me once, so I can't fault anyone for that. (Please don't take it that way.)

I just have to agree that there must be a better way. No idea what that could be, but there must be one.

We need a codemonkey to write a better poll engine ::snicker:: I know there was one poll deal that allowed tokens to be distributed and if you didn't get a token you couldn't vote, but don't recall what one that was, used it about 3 or 4 years ago.

I didn't think you were faulting me. If you were, you probably would've used a stronger word than "bemused," right? But I will say that I'm not exactly thrilled with my own behavior right now, especially seeing as certain things people can read probably will be taken out of context simply because they don't know me.

correction...
"Bemusing." You said "bemusing."

That's the trouble with writing, it is hard, even with emoticons, to convey the right tone of voice and facial expressions and all the other nuances that convey the meaning behind how something is being said.

I have seen the dearest of friendships nearly fall apart because of misunderstandings over written stuff. I'm guessing a lot of us can say we have "been there, done that".

And yeah, I'd have used a much different word ;-) I believe I have been accused of scaring people and making them think I was going to go over counters after hotel clerks for minor disagreements. O:-)

err... yes... having seen the height of the counter, and the height of the person attempting to climb over it... scared is a good word... ::snicker::

as for the voting... i trust the mods'll get it under control. it just royally sucks that they're sick when it hit the fan. :(

i agree, there's definitely a fine line between spamming and encouraging friends to check out this community (and obviously vote for their favorite). At this point its seemed like the only way to stay in the game is to beg, and plead people to vote-- but it should never have gotten this far or been about that.

It's a WRITING CONTEST people. and it should be about the best writing. When the line is blurred between being told who to vote for versus voting for the best one, you know something has to be done differently. I think it would be cool if JUDGES stepped in at this point (considering its been neck and neck all friggin' day) and considered the writing, discussion of the prompt, and storytelling at hand. It's seems to be the only fair way at this point to judge-- and may the best WRITER on the topic of "horrible job experiences" win.

since when is this a writing contest?

isn't this about who had the best story?
[info]rockyhorrorgirl wrote:
Jan. 29th, 2008 07:21 am (UTC)
yes it is about the best story. and part of having the best story is having a well written story. storytelling and writing are basically the same thing.

"In determining each prize winner, Sponsor’s judges, comprised of members of Sponsor’s staff, will first choose the top Submission received by Sponsor in response to each weekly question with the highest composite scores based on the following factors:

Content: 30%
Originality: 30%
Style: 20%
Grammar: 10%
Spelling: 10%"

that's from the official rules. Sounds like a writing contest to me! (and I would love to see THAT being the determining factor in this contest instead of it being all about an internet popularity contest).

in the end, i think whoever the moderator is for this contest will have the best "worst job experience" story of the bunch!!

maybe this is just my personal opinion but seeing as though content & originality make up more than half of what is being taken into account for judging, I'd argue that's not a "writing contest" at all. it's a "content and originality" contest which makes the judging rules very vague and up to whoever's reading it.

just because something's written well doesn't make it a good story (or, an experience worth winning an iphone for).
[info]yenniemonster wrote:
Jan. 29th, 2008 07:49 am (UTC)
But...good writing is judged on content and originality...and style.

says who? are you a judge? unless you are, it's not really up to you to decide what good writing is, is it?

not that that matters since this isn't a writing contest. but we could go on about this all day couldn't we =)

Wasn't the prompt "tell us about the worst job you've ever had, and how it changed you" and not "worst job experience"? If you believe this is a writing contest, then wouldn't following the prompt correctly be important in judging?

Plus, the poll wasn't over who wrote the best entry. It simply asked "who would you like to see as the winner for Week 8 -- Career"
[info]rockyhorrorgirl wrote:
Jan. 29th, 2008 09:00 am (UTC)
Well in 200 words i think its understandable for people to discuss "worst jobs" and therefore "worst experiences" at said jobs. Clearly all four finalists entries were originally judged as well written and as having followed the prompt-- OTHERWISE they wouldn't be finalists.

i'll agree that stating "who would you like to see as the winner for Week 8 -- Career" as the headline for the poll already sets the tone of "popularity contest." add to the fact that there weren't any clear rules for voting or what would be grounds for disqualification and that makes it stickier. And clearly by the end of the day voting numbers were being skewed, tons of new accounts made, and just all around craziness. it wasn't against any rules, so technically it may have been okay, but ultimately this contest became about numbers and not about anything relating to writing.

which is why i say what i said before: throw the stupid votes, which may or may not, have been rigged out the window and just have JUDGES decide what entry was best. no one should be disqualified-- just get a judge or perhaps a panel to decide WHO WROTE THE BEST ENTRY? that's who should win.
[info]phantascene wrote:
Jan. 29th, 2008 10:06 am (UTC)
There's an idea. :-D Maybe if HP decides to do this again, they might consider having a volunteer judges panel that would look at the entries and vote on the ones they liked?

I would really hate to see this not be revived sometime, since I really have had a great time since I found out about the group and joined it.

I agree with this one. As far as the writing contest goes, there were far better entries than my own and also better ones than these four, which ought to have been considered. However, since judges chose the final four, they ought to have gone on to choose the winner as well. Phone-in and write-in voting does not pick the best of the bunch. Remember Reuben on American Idol? He was good, but Clay was the best!

[info]shaze wrote:

Voting issues aside, I just want to say that I am thrilled to have had my story chosen as one of the final four (so to speak) I feel like I already won just to see it up there. I agree with the person above who mentioned that it is so difficult to keep the stories under 200 words! I unfortunately had to chop a lot of mine out.
I have enjoyed this group so much! Thanks for the memorieeeeees! :)

I second that as well, I was happy to be in the final 4. I also had to cut mine a lot and it seemed to lose something when I did so.

But it did come down to a popularity contest at the end, which is kind of sad considering it was a writing contest.

Definitely hard to keep under 200 words. I had fun just getting to participate, so even not being in the final four on this contest, it's been a really great experience for me. And great writing fun trying to prune to that 200 words - even if I missed it a few times knowing I was going to miss being in final four just so I could not loose all that I was trying to convey.

I'm hoping to see you all here again, if they start this group back up, there have been some really awesome entries in all the contests. And I've enjoyed getting to know something about some of you through visiting blogs as I read through entries, it has been really kewl.

Yeah, my job lost a lot of its horribleness by pruning it down to 200 words (I listed some of the other horrible aspects in my LJ). For the song category, I didn't even bother with the limit-- I just wanted to tell the story because it was so significant to me.

BTW, I meant to comment on yours for this week. I know how you feel. My dad had ALS for 14 years and spent quite a bit of that time at home.

I came very very close to not posting that, just because I am extremely private about that stuff.

Then at the last moment I just decided to heck with it, took my friend's comment that she was proud of me having the courage to even think about sharing that, and went for it.

That is the most I have said about what it's like to be a family caregiver anywhere, I haven't even said that much on my sites dedicated to the subject. It actually felt kind'a good to just get it out there.
