Hi! With this message, I would like to thank all of you who answered my questionnaire at http://fanfiction.frontexperts.com (see the original message below) and have given me helpful feedback. Many of you who sent me emails with comments let me know that my questionnaire did not fully embrace your experience with fan fiction. Because a survey is a highly standardized research instrument, there was no way of avoiding this problem but I decided to broaden my research design according to the concerns conveyed to me. Thus, I would like to conduct a group discussion with fan fiction authors where they will have the opportunity to freely talk about their experience without being bound by narrow questions like in the survey. Therefore, I am looking for Harry Potter fan fiction authors who will attend the LeakyCon 2009 from May 21st-24th in Boston and who would be willing to get together for an hour or two as a group to discuss their experience with me and the other fan fiction authors. As far as I can tell from the LeakyCon schedule, Saturday morning would probably work best to meet for the discussion. Also, it would give us a chance to get to know each other on Thursday or Friday. I will provide a space at the hotel where we will be undisturbed and make sure we have drinks and snacks. A group of 8-12 people would work best but if there are too few people for a group discussion, I would be happy to meet with any of you informally at LeakyCon to talk about your experience as a fan fiction author. By participating in a group discussion, you would make an immense contribution to the quality and accuracy of my research. I am looking forward to meeting you in person and hearing about your life in Harry Potter fan fiction. Hello! I hope it's OK that I'm posting this message here. I do not have any financial interest whatsoever, this message regards academic research only! My name is Petra Baumann and I’m doing research for my master’s thesis in sociology on Harry Potter fan fiction at the University of Graz, Austria. As a sociologist, I am especially interested in the social background of fan fiction authors: where they come from, how old they are, etc. Through my research I found that, many studies on fan fiction are done in the fields of literary studies, women studies, or cultural studies but there are very little sociological data available, especially on the Harry Potter fan fiction community. In order to gather sociological data on Harry Potter fan fiction authors, I developed a short online questionnaire. I have never dared to put my foot in the large see of Harry/Draco fics. I would love to though! I have ideas but mostly the big issue not the line leading up to that point. I know, boring.
I would love to write about:
....The cliché, there is a bond that binds Harry and Draco together, but they have a chance to stop it. They are sort of in love and they choose not to bond. *What a relief!* They are nearing 30 and it could be during the war or after.
....Draco marrying Luna. And then goes after Harry. (I know this is vague) But from Harry's POW.
....a secret affair between Harry and Draco that are as canon it can be. This is post Hogwarts.

I wrote this a long time ago, when I had just bought book 6 at a midnight party and stayed up 14 hours to read it, and then I turned around and wrote this. So either its really bad because I cannot write after 14 + hours of pure canony goodness, or its really good and I've just (as in two years ago) broken some kind of impossible barrier, like the sound barrier or the brickwall thingy in the black and white movie "Village of the Damned" (which might had another title... who knows.) I'm drunk on not having slept in forever, so please forgive my lunitic ravings and my poor attempts at sarcasm.

I know this is a sort of weird place to post this, but I'm having this desire to write some real Harry/Draco and I felt really inspired by this great fan vid, which I used to have on my hard drive, but which has completely dissappeared. It's Harry/Draco, it's to the song "The Way things are" by fiona apple, and it is really top notch. My muse and I will forever worship whoever provides the link. I've googled and googled to no avail. I just found out that the place I was building my new site at has some new "20 page limit" thing unless I fork over some dough. As if! So I'm in the market for a new place to put my feet up. I'm looking for something free that doesn't have a "page limit" and I'm looking for something that won't delete my account for putting up R or NC-17 fanfic. And preferably something easy to use, but that's negotiable. I know that's a tall order, but I really need a place to put all my fic at. I used to use ff.net and then they deleted my account and have banned me. Still not sure why, but I hear they have some weird new restrictions, so I'm not really that interested in rekindling the flame with them at this point. And I know that this whole thing is a bit off topic, but I figured since y'all are fan fic writers it would be the most logical place to ask. Thanks in advance! |

I've had it in mind for a while now to do a story based on Bill Weasley's adventures in Egypt. I've created an original character that was a friend of his and something of a translator for him. It starts out that Bill was sent to do an internship with a semi-retired cursebreaker and the gentleman was the foster parent of this original. (We'll call him Thanatos, from now on.) Than and the mentor figure had lost (their parents/wife) in an attack by Death Eaters in English-occupied wizarding Egypt. The two couples had been close (Than's parents being local Eqyptian wizards, and the mentor and his wife having been English/Hogwarts Alumni), so the mentor takes in the young man. Than had finished his schooling, for the most part, and had a knack for translating codes and interpreting curses. So he became the man's sidekick. When Bill is sent to stay and learn, the two boys become close friends, and I imagine Than even traveled to England to meet the Weasleys on a few holidays with Bill. ( more on Bill and his Egypt days... ) |

I'm not brand new to writing, but I am brand new to this community. I'm so glad I've found you! I'm writing a Harry/Voldemort/Bellatrix fic at the moment, which I know isn't everyone's cup of tea, but my question doesn't directly relate to that ship and you are an 'any-ship' comm. As a part of my fic, I want Bellatrix to point out that Harry's glasses present a weakness when fighting and dueling, and remedy this somehow. (Please don't see this as discriminatory against people who wear glasses - I myself can bearly read the computer screen without my glasses or contacts as I'm so short sighted.) However, I do wish to avoid the larger cliches of fanfiction to try and create something truly original. Would you consider Harry using either contact lenses or some sort of Eyesight Restoring potion as being a cliche? Particularly in Dark!Harry fics or MagicalCreature!Harry fics, mine being the former?

At least, she was. She is constantly reminding of her dead parents and how they died, which was really hard on her. That is, until she ran into George, a great guy she met back in her 7th year of school at St. Mungos' after she had started her internship. Although he has changed drastically, (after the war and stuff, due to Fred dying) they reform their friendship which helps both of them learn to cope and live life a little. (Angst/HurtComfort/Friendship/Romance) (( DH Spoilers))
