When Severus Snape was a little boy, he was a strange little boy. He
knew so because everyone told him he was.
Severus Snape never questioned why he was such a strange little boy.
After all, he was small and grey around the edges. He had a big nose,
too.
Early on, he figured he was going to die alone.
"I've always known I'd die alone," he croaked out, lying in the mud
with blood caked in his nostrils, watching the Last Battle rage around
him.
"You're so full of shit," Remus Lupin informed him, gently cradling
Severus' shuddering body in his arms. "You aren't going to die, and
I'm here, aren't I?"
"Perhaps I'll still die alone," he mused in bed, lying half-slung over
Remus. "It just wasn't my time."
Remus looked at him intently for a moment, freshly scarred fingers
cupping Severus' face, and kissed him. "You're a very strange man,
Severus Snape. It just so happens that I love you for it."
So it was that Severus Snape was a strange man. Fortunately, as a
very strange man, Severus found that he easily adjusted to loving
something just as strange as himself. "Stranger things have happened."
