Today's patterns have been generously shared by owlsea, Connie Tessier on sewhooked. You'll find her Hufflepuff Crest variation and a fantastic Buckbeak. Both patterns are presented in two formats: with and without seam allowance. Both patterns will also be available on the Guest Designer page of sewhooked.

Below is the layout that owlsea has created for her quilt, which she has offered to share with the group if anyone else would like to use it. The white blocks in the sky are for flying creatures, and the squares in the grassy would be great for The Whomping Willow, Hagrid's Hut, etc.

Today is a very rare no photo Tuesday. I'm attributing this lack of quilty goodness to you all working hard on your Beedle The Bard Challenge designs! Several have made their way to my inbox and I think you're all going to be very excited next week to see what the offerings are! Keep them coming, it would be fantastic to have enough patterns to create a Beedle wall hanging or small quilt.

If you're wanting to participate but don't have a copy of Beedle, there are a couple of things you can do. One: Check your local library. Even if you don't have a library card, the book is short enough that you could sit and read it in an hour and make whatever notes you might need. Two: Check out Amazon.com's full-length synopses of the stories. Amazon won the charity auction for a hand-written Beedle and then shared as much as they legally could with the world. You can get a very good idea of some of the vivid imagery in the stories, here. There are, of course, spoilers! Three: Though it may be a bit late for shopping online, you can buy a copy used for under $5, or new for under $10. Four: Seek out a friend with a copy!

Hogwarts Sue Pattern - revamped version

About the Pattern
Today's pattern is a revisited, revamped and all new version of Hogwarts Sue. She's a combination of two of my favorite things...Harry Potter and Sunbonnet Sue! Sue represents Any Hogwarts Student, boy or girl, in school robes.

You'll find the new version of Hogwarts Sue much improved from the original block, which you can see here. It's completely redesigned to break the different components up as little as possible. While it still has 5 pattern units (A - E), the individual pieces are better placed and the block itself much easier to piece. I used three different black fabrics for to represent her student robes and hat: shoes & hat (fabric 1), sleeve (fabric 2) and robes (fabric 3).

Optional: Add a small "H" for Hogwarts on the gold badge on her robes, or make a decorative letter reflecting the house of your choice. I'm thinking a lovely navy blue "R" would be just the thing for my Sue!

I have a couple of entries already and they're wonderful! My fingers are crossed that we'll get enough entries for a Beedle-themed quilt or wall hanging. Keep 'em coming!

About The Pattern
I have been enamored by the idea of chocolate frogs since the first the very first moment I read the words. I've made loads of actual chocolate frogs, both for party favors and just for fun. The Chocolate Frog boxes created for the first film were one of my favorite props and I had to have one for my HP quilt! I tried to capture the box's dimension in the actual quilting as opposed to the piecing, which makes the block itself quite simple.

This is a fresh version of one of my very first HP patterns.

Beedle The Bard - Design Challenge!

Pull out your graph paper and dust off your drawing software! hp_paperpiecing is proud (and more than a little excited!) to announce the Beedle The Bard Paper Piecing Design Challenge!

Design one new Harry Potter-themed paper pieced pattern using the stories from Beedle The Bard as your inspiration!

The pattern needs to fit on one piece of 8 1/2" x 11" paper for easy printing. I find that 7" x 10" works well for a 5" pattern, which makes it easier for our International quilters to print. Anything beyond that tends to get cropped when printed.

Please include copyright information on your pattern. Patterns can be in .jpg, .pdf, or .png format. Please note: you do not have to use my style when designing your pattern, as long as it's legible and easy for others to follow.

Submit the pattern AND sample scan or block photo *via email* by Tuesday, June 23. That's a whole month, so loads of time to design and test!

Upon the completion of the challenge, the patterns will be posted, one at a time, here on hp_paperpiecing. After each pattern has been posted here, entries will be archived on sewhooked's Guest Designer page to make them accessible to other quilters. You will retain copyright. If you request, your pattern will be not be posted on sewhooked.

For the first time ever, there will be TWO categories you can win in! Every design will be entered to win Favorite Design and Most Original categories.

In fact, Harry had the most peculiar feeling that only he and Hagrid could see it. Before he could mention this, Hagrid had steered him inside.

The Leaky Cauldron Pattern

About The Pattern
It's no secret that part of my fandom life (2006-2007) was spent working as a Crafty Witch for Harry Potter Crafts at The Leaky Cauldron. While there, I made a lot of wonderful friends, among crafters and non-crafters alike.

For the last two years, staff members from Leaky have spent endless hours planning for LeakyCon, which will take place in Boston May 21-24, 2009. LeakyCon is the first fan con in which all the proceeds will go to charity. Leaky staff members are volunteers and they work a lot of long, hard hours for nothing but the tiny bit of recognition being a part of Leaky brings.

If you're one of the lucky people heading out to Boston to participate in LeakyCon 2009, tell a staff member "thanks" and let them know that you really appreciate their hard work.

Leaky peeps, this pattern is dedicated to YOU. I wish I could be in Boston for the hugs, fun and fandom love!

Book Update
A huge stumbling block has been put in my way. Citing the current economy and market, the publisher has dropped my contract. This comes right on the heels of getting the go-ahead to share the fact that I had a contract at all. It's been a hard few days since I found out, but I refuse to give up on this book that I've work so hard on. I'm not exactly back to square one, but it is a set-back and I am searching for another publisher. I will let you know when I have something new to share.

Paper Piece Design Videos
A weeks or so ago, I mentioned a couple of tutorials on designing and converting to paper pieced patterns. There is a good reason coming that I'm sharing this information! In anticipation of that Big Announcement, I've posted a walk through in two videos of how I design my patterns in Photoshop. This is how I do it, but it's certainly not how you have to do it. How I design is something I'm asked a lot. I had an older video available, that I've now taken down. This is all new and reflects a number of changes I've made in the last year or so.

Hermione's screams echoed off the walls upstairs. Ron was half sobbing as he pounded the walls with his fists, and Harry, in utter desperation, seized Hagrid's pouch from around his neck and groped inside it: he pulled out Dumbledore's Snitch and shook it, hoping for he did not know what - nothing happened; he waved the broken halves of the phoenix wand, but they were lifeless - the mirror fragment fell sparkling to the floor, and he saw a gleam of brightest blue -

Dumbledore's eye was gazing at him out of the mirror.

"Help us!" he yelled at it in mad desperation. "We're in the cellar of Malfoy manor, help us!"

The eye blinked, and was gone.

Aberforth's Eye Pattern

About the Pattern
This scene in DH was, for me, one of the most emotionally wrenching in all of series. The trio's capture, Hermione's torture, the escape, followed by Dobby's death is a crazy, emotionally exhausting ride. In all of that, I found the eye in the mirror incredibly haunting.

This block has been sketched out for at least a year, waiting to come to life. There are two colors in the pattern intended as flesh color, and while I used two different fabrics, I don't think it's absolutely necessary. A friend passed on the main fabric I used for Aberforth's skin. She thought it was horribly ugly, and maybe it is, on it's own, but it does make some awesome wrinkled skin!

So, did anyone find my clue from yesterday's post? It was in the song I was listening to, "Blue Eyes" by Elton John!

And can I just say, it's lovely to be posting a new HP pattern.

Scar, Again

About The Pattern

Version 1 (L) & Version 2 (R)
I've wanted to do a version 2 lightning bolt for quite some time. The original version was one of my earliest designs and while I still like the simplicity of it, it was never as "lightning" shaped as I wanted it to be. I love the slanty, more pointy version a lot and I hope you enjoy it, too!

The Version 1 pattern has also been updated from the original.

Bushfire Quilt Project Update
Our quilt has been received and will join the other wonderful quilts that will be given to Australian families in need.
