Dumbledore Scarf
Well I got a comment from a very old post concerning what was called "The Dumbledore Scarf" and rather than putting the info in a reply there I would post it to the community in a brand new post.
To start... the idea came out of a discussion in this community of what would Dumbledore's scarf look like. The pattern that I came up with was based on those discussions. This also happened long before pictures were seen from Goblet of Fire showing what has been dubbed "The House Unity Scarf."
Under the cut is my pattern for "The Headmaster Scarf, a.k.a. The Dumbledore Scarf"
Pattern Here:
School Headmaster Scarf - “The Dumbledore Scarf”
The Design:
The idea for this scarf came about from a discussion on the “HP_Knitting” community of Live Journal.com. Many of us posted our thoughts as to the type of scarf we thought that Hogwarts Headmaster, Albus Dumbledore would wear. I felt he would want to show unity in the school by including all of the house colors. I chose purple for the main color of the scarf because it is a very regal, magical color and I just thought it was a color that Dumbledore would wear. (Note: this pattern was inspired and written before "H.P. & the Half Blood Prince" was published. So the chapter describing Dumbledore's Purple suit, which he wore to his visit with young Tom Riddle, was not public knowledge at the time.)
The design is based on the “Trapped Bar” style of scarves that the students wore in the movie Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. A tip of the wand and Addi Turbo circular needle goes out to Lauren Kent, http://knit.atypically.net, whose excellent patterns for Harry Potter House Scarves served as a guide when I wrote this pattern.
This scarf is knit in stockinette stitch as a tube on circular needles. When finished the ends are closed, either by 3 needle bind off or simply by the fringe. This gives you a very warm, double thickness scarf with no wrong side and no curling caused by stockinette stitch.
The Colors:
Each house at Hogwarts is represented by a pair of colors, which are as follows:
Gryffindor – Scarlet and Gold
Slytherin – Dark Green and Silver
Hufflepuff – Yellow and Black
Ravenclaw – Blue and Silver (movie) / Blue and Bronze (book)
As you can see, there are two color combinations representing the Ravenclaw house. One is shown in the movies and the other from the books. If you are making this for a Harry Potter fan, ask them their preference. Many fans are very adamant about the “correct” colors for the house, so trust me on this and ask first.
Materials:
I made my scarf using Lion Brand Wool-Ease Worsted Weight. It is 80% acrylic, 20% wool and is machine washable. The colors are very close to the movie colors and I really like how it knits up.
Main Color:
• 4 balls Wool-Ease Purple, color # 147
Trapped Bar Colors:
• 1 ball Wool-Ease Cranberry, color # 138
• 1 ball Wool-Ease Gold, color # 171
• 1 ball Wool-Ease Forest Green Heather, color # 180
• 1 ball Wool-Ease Grey Heather, color # 151
• 1 ball Wool-Ease Colonial Blue, color # 117
• 1 ball Wool-Ease Buttercup, color # 158
• 1 ball Wool-Ease Black, color # 153
NOTE 1: You will only be knitting 15 to 20 rounds of each of the trapped bar colors in the entire scarf. So you will not use the entire balls of yarn. Feel free to substitute appropriate colors of worsted weight yarn from your stash if you wish.
NOTE 2: If you are using the movie version colors for Ravenclaw, then use Grey Heather with Forest Green for Slytherin and with Colonial Blue for Ravenclaw. For a book version color you will use Colonial Blue with a warm medium brown to represent Bronze. I have only made the movie versions using Wool-Ease but would recommend the color Mink Brown #127.
Needle:
• US8 circular needle, 16” length
Additional:
• Stitch Marker (to mark beginning of each round)
• Scrap yarn for Provisional Cast On
• Tapestry Needle for weaving in ends
• Crochet Hook (size G or H) for adding fringe
Gauge: 18 sts & 20 rows per 4” stockinette square
Pattern:
Using Purple, loosely cast-on 70 sts. Use provisional cast-on if you want to close ends with a three-needle bind off. Place stitch marker, then being careful not to twist stitches, join round by knitting into the first cast-on stitch. Continue knitting until you reach the marker, this is one round of knitting. Slip the marker and continue knitting with Purple until you have 22 rounds of knitting.
At the beginning of the next round, switch to Gold and knit a total of 3 Gold rounds. Then switch to Cranberry and knit 5 rounds, followed by another 3 rounds of Gold. You have completed the “Trapped Bar” strip for Gryffindor. Break off the Cranberry and Gold yarns, and continue knitting in Purple.
Knit 22 rounds in Purple, and then switch to Grey Heather. Knit 3 rounds Grey Heather, 5 rounds Colonial Blue and 3 rounds Grey Heather. You have completed the Ravenclaw stripe. Break off the Grey Heather and Colonial Blue, and continue knitting in Purple.
Knit 22 rounds in Purple, and then switch to Black. Knit 3 rounds Black, 5 rounds Buttercup and 3 rounds Black. You have completed the Hufflepuff stripe. Break off the Black and Buttercup, and continue knitting in Purple.
Knit 22 rounds in Purple, and then switch to Grey Heather. Knit 3 rounds Grey Heather, 5 rounds Forest Green Heather and 3 rounds Grey Heather. You have completed the Slytherin stripe. Break off the Grey Heather and Forest Green Heather, and continue knitting in Purple for 22 rounds.
You have completed one set of house stripes. Repeat this two more times for a total of 12 “Trapped Bar” stripes, ending with 22 rounds of Purple.
Finishing:
Turn the scarf inside out and weave in the color change ends using your tapestry needle. Turn the scarf right side out, if you used a provisional cast-on, close both ends by using the three-needle bind off (I prefer the three-needle bind off for the nice clean edge it gives). Wash the scarf according to the yarn manufacturer’s instructions. Let it dry lying flat with the color changes along the side crease, which makes them less noticeable. Gently stretch scarf widthwise so that it is the same width for the entire length. When almost dry I put it in the dryer on low/gentle for 4 to 5 minutes.
Fringe:
Cut approximately 108 pieces of 8” Purple yarn. Fold 3 pieces in half and pull through the first stitch of both layers of yarn, using crochet hook. Slip ends through loop and pull tight to form tassel. Place one tassel every two stitches across both ends of the scarf. Lay scarf flat, finger comb fringe to smooth it out, and them trim the fringe to even it out across the width.
Finished Measurements:
Approximately 9” wide by 92” (7.5 feet) long
You can adjust the length by altering the number of purple rows between the trapped bars, or by only doing 2 set of bars for a total of 8 rather than 12.
