For all you HP knitters: a close up of Cho's Ravenclaw scarf in the upcoming GoF movie... you can almost count the stitches :D

Be warned, the site's a little slow to load - I'm sure there's a heavy load on the servers with all the new pics!

Is that...dk weight? 's too thin to be worsted...

And damnit all, my in progress Ravenclaw is too light of blue(Caron's Simply Soft in Country Blue...looked best with the coppery-orangey-bronzey color).

Much thanks for the picture! It'll torture me for ages, I'm sure. ;)

I was wondering the same thing about the weight, as it has 4 rows per CC bar, and I've been going with 3 and a worsted/12 ply/aran pattern :D. Looks like DK to me!

Sorry hon, I so didn't mean to torture you D:! It's fascinating to see though isn't it :D

It does look like that, doesn't it? I'd like to say now that there is no way in HELL I'm making another scarf in dk weight. Worsted is rough enough, in my opinion. My fingers would fall off!

By the by- I think I see where I made the color mistake...went with the colors from the first two books/movies. *le sigh* Ah well..not that brooding of a Ravenclaw anyways- I try not to be at least.

Facinating picture, though. Didn't picture Cho looking quite like that...more like my roommate(who is teensy and adorable and rather buff), actually. *shrug* I love that color blue, whatever it is. Looks kind of heathered to me...'n I'm a huge sucker for heathered yarn.

Yeah, Lauren on Atypically says on her site that the movie scarves are likely DK, but chose to do her pattern in worsted because of the time factor.

I suspect its DK or even sports weight (slightly thinner). And I agree with [info]librarygurl that the scarf looks ribbed, possibly k1p1, which would account for it not being knitted in a tube and being slightly thinner.

Good catch, [info]goldie!

It does look like a machine-knit k1p1, especially with that blue selvedge edge that's visible on Cho's right side. I cannot *imagine* doing that much k1p1 by hand, though, plus it might not pull in correctly (at least, my k1p1 doesn't pull in that far). My brain is exploding just thinking of it. XP

I'm at work right now so I can't actually lighten the picture and count, but my crude measurements make me think that the MC trapped bar is exactly twice the length of the CC bars - so that makes it 4 rows CC, 8 rows MC, 4 rows CC. I'll be counting the number of rows between bar sets tonight, too.

Guess I'll be revising a certain pattern soon... oi.

Oh you poor dear, lordie! I tried counting them and just couldn't get my eyes round it. Good luck!

I do like your pattern in worsted BTW - I can't imagine a whole scarf in DK like tersa says :D

That's why I'm gonna lighten it waaaay up and zoom in a bunch. I started to try to count on my work monitor and it went badly. :p

I've always planned to do my own scarves in DK, when I finally get around to doing them. When I started knitting scarves for other people, I stopped doing them for myself, and I *still* don't have a PoA scarf. I may have to pass on the ribbing, though. geez!

I counted the trapped bars and I'm pretty sure its 4 6 4. Not entirely sure about the large block of MC, but I think it's 36.

Oy is right. But, you do know we all worship you for putting in the time and effort and posting the fruits of your labor. :)

Someday, maybe, I will tackle a DK scarf. Maybe if I do that 2nd Slytherin scarf I'm planning out of the Tahki Cotton Classic...

I do know, and it makes me blush. The way I see it, there's no point in not sharing once I've put in the work for myself. :)

You are correct. I lightened/zoomed it in Photoshop and counted a 4/8 repeat. I'm so happy I didn't start my Ravenclaw scarf yet!

What is your preference for dk/sport weight yarn?

Actually, I haven't had the (ahem) pleasure of poring over sportweight color charts to pick HP colors just yet, but I may default to Brown Sheep's Nature Spun Sport since I've already figured out colors for it. Last I looked at it, Dale's Falk yarn had decent HP colors too, plus it's superwash.

Thanks hon! Had to put it up as soon as I saw it, being the geek I am ;D I love the blue colour too, lovely and deep, and it has almost a green edge on it on my monitor.

I'm particularly happy with that aspect because, based just on my gut feeling, it almost exactly matches the PoA Ravenclaw scarf I made in June for a friend of mine out of a nice, dark navy blue. :)

I'd say 1x1 ribbing too, and since my experience is that stitches look larger in ribbing than they do in stockinette on the same needles, I'd say it's a sport weight yarn. Although machine knit things tend to be less variable than hand knit.

ribbing...

I think I discovered the secret to the scarf - ribbing. It looks like it's either a k1, p1 or k2, p2 and done on smaller needles because you can see the ribbing. That would make it reversable and avoid curling. I think I may pull out what I have and play with that.

Huh. I guess I'm not the only one. It looks like a k1p1 rib to me, too fine to be k2p2.

I made a k1 p1 PoA in worsted and it is a complete pain to weave in the ends. The trapped bars can make the edges bulge out as well, since some worsted weights can be a slightly thicker in the lighter colors. Still, thanks for the screencap!

Wow...a part of me is glad I've spent so much time working on my friends' scarves I haven't done my own yet. I'm just about done with a sportweight SS Gryffindor and THEN I am starting a sportweight PoA Ravenclaw in book colors...but gads. Ribbing. I've never played with ribbing so I'm kinda...eek.

BTW, my tie came about a week after HBP and it's lovely. I adore it and can't wait to wear it to GoF. Actually...I can wait. Gotta knit my scarf first...

k1p1 rib in sport weight? o.o

But from the close up pic with Cho it looks like it's flat, not in the round, which would also make it less bulky (& less yarn).

I'm in California so the thick tube didn't appeal so much. I made a few SS/PS ones in K1P1 flat [out of Red Heart Super Saver] for the youngin's around me. In fact, I still have one around here... why I haven't taken a pic of it or scanned it in yet I can only attribute to laziness.

~goes off to play with cameras~

I'll make a new post with them.
