hp.grad.comm@gmail.comAre you a graduate student? Are you desperately trying to write annotated bibliographies for class, study for prelims, or finish a dissertation, yet continually find yourself distracted by new and shiny Harry Potter fanfic or art or meta? Us, too!

You are welcome to post:
- Pleas for advice regarding your grad school work or dissertation, including time management concerns, content concerns, problems with professors or colleagues, etc. It doesn't have to be about Harry Potter in this case, but most of the folks here will recognise any HP references you choose to add to your post. ;)
- Searches for interview or questionnaire participants (say, for sociology projects). Best to keep it brief, and have interested parties email you off-list, though.
- Calls for papers for conferences or publications that have something to do with the Potterverse. ie: A lit crit volume on slash vs. het; A conference on law and government in the Potterverse; etc. Please do not advertise for non-Potter academic conferences or publications here, though.
- Links to grad school help sites, humourous videos or websites, etc. Make us laugh! Goodness knows we all need it.
- Ruminations on the connections between HP and your dissertation. Bring in Derrida, if it helps! A real essay on Slytherin House as Roman Empire would probably best be posted to
hp_essays, but any less formal connections you want to make to help yourself feel better about your work, go ahead. - Teaching Assistant tales.
- Introductions! Who are you, and what are your challenges re: living a full fandom life and not flunking out of grad school? We want to meet you!
You may NOT post:
- Your own fanfic or fanart. There are other comms for that. Meta is allowable, if it directly pertains to academia and/or graduate school. Art is allowable, if it is a sketch of your advisor kicking you out of your program because of your HP fanart addiction. ;)
- Fanfic or fanart recs. There are other comms for that. Meta links are allowable, if they directly pertain to academia and/or graduate school.
- "Uh, yeah, I'm a freshman in a Western Civ class, and I was wondering what books to use for my paper on the Roman Empire." Your mods will smite you for this.
Other Rules:
- Play nice. You think someone else's dissertation topic or deadline worries (or OTP, for that matter) are stupid? Too bad. We all get enough criticism from our colleagues and advisors. We're here for a bit of support. Constructive advice is welcome; rudeness and flames are not.
- Anonymous commenting IS permitted. Many of us would rather not have our HP obsession and our professional lives coincide, which might mean keeping our location (and especially, our university) under wraps. We respect the right of posters and commenters to be vague about their department or their project.
- While we appreciate the struggles of the undergraduate student Harry Potter fan, the pursuit of the PhD is a whole different box of Every Flavour Beans, quite frankly, so we are reserving this space for graduate students and faculty.
- The moderators reserve the right to delete posts that don't adhere to the rules.
