Since neither my dear friend Nikki (unbrokensky) nor I seemed to be able to wrestle our muses into submission and make icons lately (by which I mean "most of this year," of course), we decided to attempt to jump-start them by having an icon battle.

We each chose two caps from five of our (many) shared fandoms, giving us a total of twenty caps to work with. The fandoms we settled on were Bones, Doctor Who, Glee, Life on Mars (UK), and Merlin.

My beloved neversince asked me to do a tutorial on the coloring I used for my recent batch of Star Trek icons. Since she is fabulous and since I still have a few of the .psd files, I figured why not?

While I'm writing the tutorial specifically using Star Trek cam caps (i.e. much lower-quality than what we'll have once the movie is out on DVD or what you'd get from an HD television show), the general technique of using curves adjustment layers is applicable in many situations (it's the main way I color my icons), and settings similar to the ones in this tutorial will be especially helpful for heavily blueish-tinted caps/images.

If you're already familiar with curves adjustment layers and how they work, you can skip straight to part two. If hearing the phrase "curves adjustment layers" induces glassy-eyed terror, take a deep breath and start with part one. They confused me at first as well, but once I got the hang of them I couldn't imagine life without them.

OMG AN UPDATE! WITH ICONS!

I don't even know where my muse has been, guys. But then JJ Abrams came along and dragged her back to me (kicking and screaming, most likely) with a BEAUTIFUL little movie called Star Trek. And so, having made my way through half of wickedground's fantastically large set of screencaps, I bring 57 icons! So far it's mostly Kirk and Spock with a healthy smattering of Everyone Else (although no Scotty or Nimoy!Spock yet, because I haven't gotten that far in the film yet, lol).

I have been supremely unproductive lately :(

I have a couple different icon sets in the works but for now, I come bearing another music video!

It's a departure from my usual story-vid or character/relationship-study vid - it's a credits sequence for a hypothetical Doctor Who spinoff about 10.5 and Rose and their adventures in the parallel world. I entitled said hypothetical spinoff Doctor Who: Defenders of Earth and set the credits to "A Place In Time" by Amanda Abazaid, the theme song to the show "The 4400." I think the lyrics are a perfect fit for 10.5/Rose.

After a long video draught thanks to software issues (I was finally forced to give up on Windows Movie Maker and had to figure out another program, eventually settling on Sony Vegas, for those who are curious), I finally have another music vid to share! (I am also slowwwwwly working on another set of icons. Slowwwwwly.)

Anyway, the vid! It's to "You and Me" by the Plain White T's, a song which was begging to be vidded the entire time I was without a vidding program, much to my frustration, lol. So once I finally figured out what was going on in Sony Vegas, this was the first song I reached for.

I capped this because one of the first things I thought about the show while watching it was how damn pretty it is in terms of cinematography, and once I finished, I thought I might as well share them. I am hoping to get the second episode capped fairly soon, and might continue as the series progresses. (I am also hoping to cap some other things I've got lying around, but that's another story, lol.) The credits are gorgeous, so I made a separate download of the caps I took of them. These were capped manually with Gadwin Printscreen and are unedited except to remove black bars from top/bottom of caps and resave as jpgs.

Wow, it's been a while since I posted anything.
