The status of minor children in the hospital is an issue that comes up more than once on House, M.D. How much should a child be told about her disease and its treatment? Is it right to draw the legal line of competence at the age of 18? Are we underestimating a child’s or a teenager’s ability to understand what is happening to his body? Moreover, can we trust parents, themselves imperfect and often self-interested human beings, to act in their children’s interests?
