11:09 am - Games to Check Out
|

Telltale games, the company responsible for the Sam and Max seasons and the current Tales of Monkey Island, have produced a number of other episodic adventure games based on Strongbad, the Bone graphic novels, and Wallace and Gromit. I'm currently downloading, so I can't speak for their quality, but I can't imagine it's possible to make a really bad Wallace and Gromit adventure game. I have started playing their stand-alone game Lucidity, a beautiful puzzle-adventure. Your character is a girl who has fallen asleep while listening to nana's bedtime stories, and must be led through an increasingly complex dream landscape to collect fireflies while avoiding monsters. You lead the zombielike child by dropping various items in her path- stairs to climb, a fan to make her fly, etc. I can't convey the dreamlike quality, but so far it's a compelling and surreal experience.
In tangential news, two more wallace+gromit short films have been released in the last couple years, A Matter of Loaf and Death and a christmas special.

7:30 pm - Let's Play Dwarf Fortress!
|

koyetay
|
Oh hello. Would you like to play some Dwarf Fortress? I would like to.
I've told a few of you about my plans to start a HG Dwarf Fortress Succession Game, wherein a single person controls the fortress for 1 year (DF time, obviously) before handing the save file off to another player. My early efforts were daunted by a strange bug that was preventing me from saving the game, and no amount of reinstalls (or indeed, XP reformats) seemed to fix the issue. Well, I've since made the switch to Windows 7 and found dwarf fort miraculously functional! So I set right to work starting up a fortress for the purposes of succession play.
Dwarf Fortress being the game it is, my last two fortresses didn't make it a full year. The most recent failure was rather amusing, however. Below, I've chronicled the tale of the epic fail that is The River of Death on the Mud Flats.
( The River of Death on the Mud Flats )
Thus ends the tale of the River of Death on the Mud Flats. Almost made it to winter that time!
So anyway, that's basically what I have in mind for a succession game. Ideally, players would make shorter, regular updates as posts to the HG LJ until their year has ended. I can arrange hosting for save files and suchlike for ease of transfer.
Who would be interested in this? I'm rather busy with the end of the semester coming up, so it may be a few weeks before we actually start, but I'd like to get a list of interested players started now (mostly so I know what to name the dwarfs). Comment below to sign up!

So, Borderlands is a 20-hour-long (19:30 in my all-missions playthrough) remix of Fallout 3 and Diablo. The RPG aspects like a simplified Diablo (simplified skill-tree, simplified inventory, item generation), the actual gameplay like Fallout 3 (instead of "v" you hit "f"). Plot is paper-thin. It also has the obligatory annoying unskippable opening of Fallout 3.
It's okay.
I do love Maliwan, though. Their guns are the best! Or at least, the two-shot revolver that shoots instant-death poison they made is. Holy crap I sold so much of my stuff to get that, and used for like from levels 20 on up (to level 30+).

So I'm trying to pare down the amount of junk in my house. Thus, I'm selling a few console games and other things. All games/movies are $5 unless otherwise indicated, but the prices are just a suggestion (I'm mostly just interested in getting rid of this stuff), feel free to haggle. If you see something you'd like, leave a comment or send me an email.
Wii

Odds and Ends 4 C-cell batteries, unopened 4 D-cell batteries, unopened
* I received these games for free from a friend who said they might be defective. Spiderman, I know, crashes towards the end of the first training mission, but I've never actually tried Pirates. It could well be that the games would be fine after having the discs resurfaced.
** I'm selling these games on behalf of a friend.
*** Pokemon Stadium originally came with a fancy Gameboy reader you plugged into the N64 controller so you could use your personal Pokemon. Unfortunately, mine stopped working and has long since been thrown away. If you do happen to have a reader, keep in mind that Pokemon Stadium came out in the Red/Blue/Yellow era and likely can't handle pokemon from the newer games.

If you like indie games, Digipen is a game design school emphasizing innovation. They offer all their student projects for free- probably a couple hundred, in every genre, and there are some great ones. https://www.digipen.edu/gallery/games/
In other news, coffeegeek is willing to host a LAN a week from Saturday (nov. 7th), on the condition that I do the organizing. I'll be calling people later on, but if you're interested keep the date open. Also: Abby, do you still have the switch?

anyone want a tv? It's about 27-28", flat front, really heavy, makes a high pitched sound sometimes if you have sensitive ears. Good tv though, free if you come pick it up.

Has anyone else noticed that since the 3.5 update whenever you type something in the URL box, instead of doing a google "I'm felling lucky" search, it seems to look on your hard drive in the mozilla program folder and give an error saying it couldn't find it there. Or is this only happening to me because it's pissing me off.

It seems the creators of DOTA Allstars have created a full, stand-alone game based on the concept, calling the new game League of Legends. Best part? It's free.

4:59 pm - Summer LAN
|

koyetay
|
Oh hello there. I promised LANs this summer and have yet to deliver. For that, I apologize. I hope to make up for that in some small measure this upcoming Friday.
Previous LANs I've held have been marred by the presence in our home of many small fluffy critters, causing the allergy-prone no small amount of torment. I believe I have found a solution. This LAN will be held in the garage rather than the house itself.
DETAILS
When: Friday, July 10th, 7:00PM-ish (though of course, you're welcome to come early and help set up). Lasts until I kick you all out on Saturday sometime.
Equipment Needed: Tables tables tables, chairs, extension cables, powerstrips, ethernets, the switch
Refreshments: I am totally broke right now, so I am afraid that food and beverages will need to be taken care of by a third party. Anything you can bring to share would be greatly appreciated. If you spend a significant amount, we can even collect some donations for you.
Drugs and Alcohol?: That's up to you. I'm not opposed.
Where: 381A Louise Ln. Take the parks out past the Blue Loon. Take a right on Gold hill. Take a left on Henderson. Take another left on Louise LN. First driveway on the left. ( Map! )
Contact: 455-4099 (home), 799-1552 (cell), koyetay@gmail.com, @koyetay, or leave a comment here.
Spread the word, everybody's welcome!
NOTE: I recently had to replace my cell phone and lost my phone contacts in the process. I'm depending on others to contact me, so please call and let me know what you'll be contributing.

Who remembers the X-Men cartoon from the nineties? Decent show, altogether. The thing that bugged me the most about it was the intro. Synth-powerguitar awesomeness aside, I've always felt that it's pretty lame. Which was why I was so stunned by the awesomeness of the Japanese intro for the same goddamn show. Holy fuck! It's got lasers and machine guns and bad-assery abounding! Why the fuck can't we get animated comic treatments as awesome as that?
Put me in charge, Marvel. Or DC, I don't really care. You give me the budget, and I'll set you up with a superhero anime so modernly dark and awesome that the fanboys will shit themselves in the rush to go buy it. Oh wait, they do that anyways with the shit you're already producing? Fucksticks.
In any case... Cry for the moon!
-G. Fodrotski
P.S. Apparently Magneto has a secondary mutation that allows him to summon Zerglings? It's not by any means canon, but I'm going to allow it just for the awesome.
current mood: blah current music: SHOCK!
