A mutlifandom fic,art and thing-a-thon for writing that fic, or making that picture you've always wanted to but never dared too.

"Do something scary. The payoff is awesome!" - Lucy Lawless

Welcome to the "Do Something Scary" multifandom fic and artathon!!

You know that story (or wall or icon or music vid) that crossed your mind once upon a time that you never quite had the nerve to write? The one that was too over-the-top, too risque, too violent, too intimate, too revealing, too bizarre, too cliche to admit to, too far outside your comfort zone? The one for a fandom you feel unqualified to write in? Or the one you're afraid everyone else has already done better than you could? The one you're afraid to admit was your idea? The one you're afraid people will judge you for? The one that makes you nervous even to see it in ink? The one that holds too much of your heart and soul? The one in your peripheral vision you're afraid to look directly upon?

Whatever it is, for whatever reason, it's the creation that's inside you that you're afraid to give to the world.

That's what you're going to produce for this ficathon. You're going to do something scary and find out the payoff can be awesome.:)

House Big Bang - ROUND TWO!
by Zulu ([info]queenzulu)
at August 1st, 2008 (02:00 pm)

The first round of House Big Bang Challenge was a huge success, bringing thirteen new Housefic novellas of at least twenty thousand words each and nearly thirty pieces of art into the fandom. The novellas in the archive represent the variety of ships and genres in the fandom, and range in subject from canon to crossovers to crack--and the art is just as varied and just as terrific. In fact, the entire challenge was was such fun that we're doing it again.

The general rules and timeline of the challenge are as follows, but they may be subject to change/revision when the Official Sign-Ups, Rules, and Important Dates are posted.

Challenge Rules for Writers
1. Stories must have a minimum length of 20 000 words. There is no maximum length.
2. Stories may be any genre: gen, het, boyslash, or girlslash.
3. The story's central element must relate to House, MD, and its characters. Crossovers and alternate universes are permitted.
4. Stories will be posted to a central site on the day the challenge goes live, with links to the summaries in this community for feedback, but afterwards may be posted to your personal journal or site.
5. The stories MAY NOT be posted, in whole or in part, prior to March 29, 2009. You may, of course, share with betas, but please keep your story under wraps as much as possible, so that the artists/vidders can make their choices anonymously when the time comes.
6. All stories must be betaed before final posting.

Challenge Rules for Artists and Vidders
1. You agree to create at least one piece of art or a vid to accompany one of the Big Bang stories.
2. Art can be of any type you wish: orginal illustration, cover art, photo manip.
3. Art or Vid can be of any rating you choose, provided that it is not more than one rating higher than your chosen fic. For instance, if your fic is G, gen, you cannot make shippy art or rate higher than PG-13.
4. You will be able to post your artwork or vid at your livejournal or site after the challenge goes live. If you'd rather, we will host your art at the Big Bang site.
5. Art and vids may not be posted unlocked anywhere on the web, in whole or in part, before March 25, 2009. Posting to betas or regular small audiencing groups is excepted, but keep the numbers down.

Round Two will begin sign-ups for writers on AUGUST 19, 2008 and run until SEPTEMBER 1, 2008. As of today, you have a whole month to decide if you'd like to be among us, so get that thinking cap on! More reminders will be posted as the deadline for sign-ups draws nearer.

Here are the Important Dates to know for Round Two:

August 19 - September 1, 2008: Sign Up Period for Writers and Artists
February 1, 2009: Finished stories are due.
February 1 - February 15, 2009 - Artists and vidders claim fic summaries.
March 15, 2009 - Artists' and vidders' submissions are due.
March 25, 2009 - Archive goes live.

"Our House is a Very, Very, Very Fine House" Fanfic Contest is being relocated and renamed to [info]house_of_fanfic. New site is up and running. Sorry to bug and for the hassle. The reason: the old name was just lame. (Mods, please delete if this isn't allowed. Thanks :-)

Hall of Fame time again
by Namaste ([info]namasteyoga)
at July 15th, 2008 (04:07 pm)

Hey there everyone.

Hope you're having a good summer (for those of us in the northern half of the world anyway). The list of the Housefic Hall of Fame fics has been updated -- we have more than 60 of them now, voted on by the community as a whole. Let me know if there are any problems with the list or links.

We'll have another Author Q&A coming up, but in the meantime, I wanted to open the floor for other fic nominations for the Hall of Fame.

It's a fairly easy process. There are two rules: The fic must be completed, not a work in progress, and authors have to agree to take part in the process. You can either nominate via email, from the link at the right side of the page, or drop a nomination here. Please mention why it should be considered a Hall of Fame fic, either here or in email. We'll take it from there.

Thanks.

The Examination: Cryptictac
by Namaste ([info]namasteyoga)
at July 6th, 2008 (11:22 am)

Humor, angst, het, slash, drabbles, epics or vids, [info]cryptictac does it all, and makes it all seem easy. Or maybe not easy, especially in the case of some of her fics which may tear out your heart, but at least with Ticcy it all seems real.

Well, at least when Ticcy intends for it all to be real. After all, The Mysterious Tube of Lube was all about taking a pointed -- and funny -- look at how fic sometimes forgets about reality.

House: Oh, boy, look at us getting hot and heavy.
Wilson: Oh god, yes. Rub me harder with your sexy stubble, you naughty boy.
House: [rubs his chin and cheek hard across Wilson's face, neck and chest] Considering you're still married and I've been pining over Stacy, and considering we've both never been with a guy, it's amazing how gay we are, isn't it?

The Examination: Shutterbug_12
by Namaste ([info]namasteyoga)
at June 27th, 2008 (02:21 pm)

Some fic writers enter the fandom arena slowly, slinking around the edges with a few ficlets, maybe a one-shot character study. [info]shutterbug_12 entered with A Certain Dawn, a 23,000-word, House/Wilson take on the Ketamine failure that took us further than canon.

“You couldn’t fail.” Wilson finished House’s sentence quietly. Despite himself, Wilson raised his hand to brush the base of House’s head, his fingers slipping beneath short strands of hair. He traced the jagged scab there, remembering the blood in the shower. Wilson exhaled a broken breath. “You couldn’t take the pills, the morphine, and you haven’t started using your cane again because you couldn’t lose—”

“Don’t.” House flinched and reared back, shoving Wilson away with both hands and nearly sending himself back into his chair.

"Look!” Wilson gestured wildly. “You can hardly keep your balance! But if you took back the cane and the pills, it would mean that you’d lose your control, your newfound independence. And you’d rather fight your way through bruises and cuts and gashes than lose your control. You couldn’t let yourself go back to being –”

“Stop trying to figure me out. I'm not a goddamn patient, so—”

Writing Exercise: How short can a short story be?

How short can a short story be?

This is the genre of flash-fiction, the art of telling a full story--containing a protagonist, conflict, obstacles/complications and resolution--in as few words as possible. Usually flash-fiction runs between 250-1000 words, although the lower limit is extremely flexible; Ernest Hemingway managed to write a full story in six and called it his best work: "For sale: baby shoes, never worn." Other well-known authors have also managed this 6-word feat.

The challenge is to write House flash-fiction, in as few words as you can comfortably manage. The story must contain a protagonist, conflict, obstacles and resolution. The total word count must be 1000 words or less. If you are already comfortable writing stories of this length, try writing a full story of 500 words or less. The lower limit is up to you. If you like, post a comment to this post with a link to your story. As always, there is no deadline for this exercise.

Have fun!

New fic challenge community. Cause there was some interest and some maybes.

[info]janitorsxcloset

Basics. Monthly challenges. Just for fun. Any character, any ship. Het/Slash/OT3/etc.

Every challenge will have three prompts. A quote, a song and a screencap. Whatever you do with those prompts is fine. Combine them, write three fics, whatever you sleep deprived brain comes up with.

A Fascinating Resource for Writers
by nightdog_barks ([info]nightdog_barks)
at June 9th, 2008 (11:56 am)

I ran across this site yesterday while doing some research for a Housefic and mentioned it in my own LJ as a possible writer's resource -- [info]pwcorgigirl suggested I share it here.

It's clinicaltrials.gov. This is a site sponsored by the U.S. National Institutes of Health, and contains an incredible registry of federally and privately (i.e., Big Pharma) supported clinical trials in the U.S. and around the world. It's searchable by medical condition, drug, sponsor, and location.

Need a clinical trial for your characters to participate in/talk about/fight over? The names of (real) new drugs? Experimental drugs? Want to throw around medical babblespeak terms and sound like you know what you're talking about? (Hey, I do it all the time.)

Everything is here, from Light Therapy in the Treatment of Leg Pain (they're exploring the application of monochromatic near-infrared light energy) to the experimental use of Sorafenib and RAD001 in Renal Cell Carcinoma. There are also unusual projects, such as Studies of Thyroid Abnormalities in Northeastern Kazakstan Associated With Nuclear Weapons Testing and Scientific Protocol for the Study of Thyroid Cancer and Other Thyroid Disease in Belarus Following the Chernobyl Accident.

A fascinating site, and well worth a look!

There's No Such Thing In The World (As An Undo Button)
Author: [info]queenzulu
Fandom: House, M.D.  (loosely based on Knocked Up)
Characters: House/Foreman, Wilson/Cuddy
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: sex, mpreg, AU
Link goes to the first part - there are 15 parts, total.

No, I haven't gone crazy. Yes, I'm reccing an AU mpreg. And, yes, you should read it. Here's why:
Zulu says she wrote this entirely for herself. Yet she manages to take one of the most ridiculous fanfiction cliches and turn it into a touching and insightful story, as she follows House and Foreman from a drunken one-night-stand, through the fallout, and into a (semi-dysfunctional) relationship and parenthood. So put aside your disbelief and enjoy.

I mod the Thirteen community [info]fiftyxfifty and just started running challenges, and was thinking about creating a community for monthly House fic challenges.

For any character and any ship/slash/ot3/etc.

Would anyone be interested in this? Is there a comm already out there that I can't find (even though I've been looking hard)?

If you're interested would you vote in the poll here

If I get a good response (and maybe even not) I'll do it.

The Examination: Phinnia
by Namaste ([info]namasteyoga)
at May 26th, 2008 (08:51 pm)

Not every author needs a novel to tell a story. With her first fic, Pocket/Change [info]phinnia showed an ability to give us intimate views of House and Wilson with just a few short words -- or, in this case, a few objects: He told himself that with a minibar bottle of gin and a lighter he'd be prepared for anything (like surgeons in Clint Eastwood movies) but really? It was just for the gadget factor.

Welcome back to Housefic_Meta’s profiles of authors in the fandom. We’re starting things out now with [info]queenzulu and will be adding more over the next few weeks. Feel free to ask your own questions below.

Some authors like to mix things up, play around with different characters and even different ships. [info]queenzulu takes that to extremes. She’s given us different views of House from pretty much every angle, and is one of the few writers out there who is not only writing Foreman, but enjoys it -- and makes a ‘ship of Foreman and House seem absolutely perfect.

From “Percussion,” which sets up a world in which Foreman isn’t a fellow, but still ends up getting to know more about House than he’d expected.

"Funny," Foreman says, "how I don't believe you." He's not bothered in the least--House's body is still warm against his, and when House moves to take the weight off his leg, it just happens to leave room for Foreman to settle closer. "Do you usually interrogate doctors working for your department about their family history before kissing them in exam rooms?"

discussion post: unexplored territory?
by blue ([info]oldblue)
at May 3rd, 2008 (06:59 pm)

Hey all!

The old writer's block has caught me in its sticky trap. So I thought I'd try to start a little discussion going here. My question is: what do you consider to be the most unexplored or neglected subjects, characters, ideas, plots, styles, etc. in House fanfiction?

For me, I think I'm surprised (or maybe disappointed) at the lack of epic out-of-hospital fics. I know there are quite a few good ones, but we so rarely leave PPTH in canon that I'd expect more 'adventure' type fics to make up for that. Anyway, that's one.

Thoughts?
