Producer and Writers from House Lectured @ My School
Hi! I'm new to the community, and I thought I'd like to share some information. I know this community is primarily for fanfiction and fanart, but I thought (given the current state of H/W), this might cheer some people up.

I go to USC and am currently a film student. One of the classes I took invites television writers, producers, actors, and directors to a private symposium. David Shore, Russell Friend, and two other TV writers on staff came to my class about a month ago to talk. I'd like to share what they said about the House/Wilson relationship.

Jumping straight to the topic of primary concern, one of the writers asked if anyone believed that House and Wilson were lovers. Half the class raised their hand (male and female alike), and the guest speakers literally smirked at one another. I sat three rows away from the stage. They smirked.

The writers acknowledged that they are entirely aware of the subtext they infuse in virtually every episode. That's correct. They know what they're doing, and they're doing it on purpose. These are the reasons they gave my class:

1.) They want parallel the relationship with Holmes and Watson. This is not to say that they believe Holmes and Watson were necessarily "romantically involved," but that they wanted to mirror the level of trust and loyalty between the two. It's a relationship that goes above and beyond the categories of friends and lovers.
2.) They have seen the rampant fanfiction online, and they know the slash circle is quite large. They do not want to exclude us as an audience. (And besides, a handful of the writers on staff are on our side anyway).
3.) Admittedly, the House and Wilson relationship is the most important relationship in the show to date.

They made a disclaimer, however, that the Cameron/House relationship will come into play more later on. Unfortunately, they did not divulge any further information about how or why as that would spoil their plans for season 4. (Something for the H/C people to look forward to).

David Shore said that the fall-out between House and Wilson is temporary. To surmise what he said (to the best of my memory): The fall-out has to be temporary. These two characters combined bring balance to the show's comedy and drama.

When they pitted Wilson and House against one another, the balance was disrupted. This is evident through the tonal shift of season 3. The season suddenly became dark (darker than they intended), which is a testament to what happens when Wilson and House are not on a friendly basis. They had to test the friendship for the sake of House's personal growth as a character. To do this, they had to break away from the formula they set-up in seasons 1 and 2, even though that risked upsetting the audience. Quoting Russell "we valued House's growth more than pissing off the audience."

Hope you enjoyed this as much as I did. They talked about the H/W relationship for about 15 minutes. The remainder of the two hour lecture focused on how the show got started, how they plan on gradually serializing the story arcs, etc., and the writing and producing process.

Oh boy, now I get to dread next season too. My love/hate relationship with this show is majorly leaning towards hate right about now.

That is pretty cool though, sounds like a lecture I'd actually attempt to stay awake for.

The funny thing is that a GUY from the audience asked if they could kill off Cameron. One of the staff writers replied: "You want her dead?"

A few class members murmured "Yes."

The writer replied that that kind of emotional response from us is entirely their fault as a writing staff. They admitted that writing Cameron is a lot harder than writing Wilson.

I'm afraid I had to include H/C so as not to get everyone's hopes TOO high.

Nevertheless, it's comforting to know that there are four writers on staff who support House/Wilson. Another segment on staff House/Cameron, and another segment House/Cuddy. It's a diverse staff that represents the audience itself.

The writer who asked: "Who believes House and Wilson are lovers?" Happened to be a supporter. I'm kicking myself right now because I can't, for the life of me, remember his name. He had thick, curly black hair and wore glasses.

Thank you so much for posting this!

Since they didn't give any more information about the House/Cameron situation, I am just REALLY hoping that they only brought it up to see the audience's reaction to that relationship compared to their mention of the House/Wilson realtionship (i.e. what the students seemed more excitd about).

If they are good writers, obviously they will put more in of what the viewers take kinder to in order to get the better ratings?

There are a lot of Cameron/House fans. To be fair, there are a lot of Cameron/House haters. If I read their body language correctly (ha!), the writer's will try to be careful. If you scroll above, you will see a long argument I posted in response to another commentor regarding this issue.

Oh gods. You completely win. And, the writers earned a billion ++++ points ♥

I'm not that worried about the H/C in season 4. That's bound to happen, since part of the audience roots for it, and that's bound to finish soon too, imho, because that pairing doesn't "click".

... And the promise that the awful Tritter-related angst will end is what made my day.

I wouldn't elimate the lack of sincerity as a possiblity, though I feel that it doesn't make sense for House's apology to be insincere. It would imply he didn't learn anything from his OD, and clearly he went to Tritter after Wilson threw the bottle at him.

If House's apology was insincere, then his character has not grown. I'm trying to think of a reason why he would do that, and the only I option I have is that he's going to try to manipulate Wilson or manipulate any witnesses to his apology. I honestly can't think of what the motivation would be behind insincerity. The only answers I have are revenge and/or manipulation to make whatever his situation is better, but these reasons don't feel sound.

David said the rift in their friendship is temporary. The problem is, we don't know what he means by temporary. I think everything will be somewhat resolved by the season finale.

There is a God.

(And on the House/Cameron stuff, honestly. Whatever. We all *knew* it was ineivtable. Frankly, I'd rather see it happen, have the writers have their fun, get that diastrous and character-jumping the FUCK over with ASAP and then move on. At least when it happens and blows up, then it will be *over* with. Though, the Ham gloating might make me sick in the meantime.)

Yeah, but when it's over, then we can gloat. LOL

Now, now. We should play nice. Wouldn't it be awesome if the VERY last episode of the ENTIRE series just had House touching Wilson's hand and then: FADE OUT.

It's subtle. It's sweet. It's not overtly sexual. But it gets the message across loud and clear.

At that point, there's nothing the network can do. There's nothing the fans can do. There's nothing the writers can do. Show's wrapped-up, and it'll be too late for viewers to boycott the show for whatever prejudiced reasons they might have.

Ah, one can dream.

Realistically, House is going to stay alone. He's too messed-up. Fortunately, Wilson's also messed-up. They can be alone and messed-up together.

I was so happy to find this, when I logged on this morning. It makes my day. I have enough faith to ride off of now to make it through the rest of this month till January.

I'm also glad they finally admitted we H/W fans exist. I feel like we finally have a little spot in the world and are considered citizens of it. And they actually care about our opinion and playing to our whims a bit. I Think I recall there being one writer who posts on LJ about two of the episodes she wrote for and she's a supporter of the H/W relationship, but it's nice to know that David Shore is aware of the relationship and playing to it as well.

As for any House/Cameron 'stuff' later on, I guess you just got to take the good with the bad. I'm not a really strong hater of any potential relationship between the two, I just don't think it's possible in a long term aspect and won't last that long on the show when it does happen. (I say when, because that's where it's heading right now.)

But, Que sera sera. At least it doesn't look totally disasterous for our OTP just yet.

Thank you very much for sharing this with us! Instilling a little hope, faith and wonder into my life again. :D

Wow, thanks for posting this!!! I'm amused that some of the writers are H/W shippers and that they flat out asked who thought that House and Wilson were lovers! I think that just made my year.

But really, I like that they acknowledge the fanbase and even have their own rivalry fandoms happening within the writers' circle. Of course, ham was going to happen...that was just kind of inevitable, but it would be oh so nice if they could just tackle that and move on. (On to Wilson *coughcough*)

Again, thanks for posting this! I had nothing original to say...just expressing amusement!

They said they enjoy rotating ships, as it's part of the job and there's really nothing more fun for them than making fans squirm.

Believe it or not, a lot of TV people know about slash and fanfiction. A LOT. We had guest speakers from The Simpsons, Family Guy, The Office, and Weeds who mentioned that our circle is a perfectly legitimate audience demographic. They're not ignorant.

I FEEL SO MUCH BETTER ABOUT LIFE.

Not only is the fighting temporary (OH THANK GOD), but ahhahahaha the character and balance of the show is admittedly about H/W? IT REVOLVES AROUND THEM. I already knew that, but I thought it was just my slash glasses coming into play.

Since I like boycuddling even more than boysex sometimes, I'm totally okay with the "beyond friends and lovers" thing! (Although that seems slightly pretentious, and kissing would be VERY NICE.)

It's nice to hear that they realize exactly how important Wilson is to the show, and that the friendship will be back on solid ground by (I would assume) the end of the season.

I've been bracing myself for House/Cameron for ages, so I'm not too worried. The actual episodes that involve it may make me physically ill, but I don't see it lasting for too long (on the other hand, that's what everyone said about the Tritter arc). I would feel the same way about a House/Chase relationship. It's like a college student dating one of their professors: technically legal, but weirdly incestual and squicky, for me at least.

I hope that once Cameron gets the House-lurve out of her system, she'll become a bit more well-adjusted. It would be great if she could learn that one can be cheerful, optimistic, and helpful, without being a doormat. Likewise, one can have self-esteem without being a complete jackass. House isn't the best role-model, and she needs to realize that.

*Thinks fondly back on the first season, when she actually liked didn't want to throttle Cameron.*

Thanks for posting about the lecture! Interesting content aside, anything that sparks so much discourse in the community is great :)

Ditto on the squick. House, with any of the Ducklings, just gives off this hugely, bizarrely parental vibe. Man, it's sad - I look back to pretty much the entire first season and see this pretty awesome, understatedly-screwed-up Cameron, and realize that I liked her! What happened, Cameron? In a way I dislike the Ham because, endurance issues aside, it seems like making Cameron go for House like that is a bit demeaning - instead of being the quietly fucked-up immunologist, she's the girl who wants to cure her boss (who shits on her at every turn) with her WUV.

I have to say, coming in to this fandom I thought I had never seen one where TPTB were so openly accepting the slashy subtext of their show. Just that they had vote on the official site on which relationships was preferred, and included the M/M one as well as the two rather obvious M/F ones. And that the actors seemed willing and able to talk about it, not just HL who you really wouldn't expect to be homophobic ::G:: but the others like Jennifer too. If the producers and writers are positive about such ideas, and willing to pursue them, then of course they will happen.
So I'm not surprised, but a bit relieved that they realise this is taking the show to far in the wrong direction. Drama is fine, melodrama is trite.

Ooooh yesss!!! This was totally a wonderful surprise after a difficult final exam. THANK YOU!!! I must admit I'm not excited about furthering the H/C relationship, but oh well. Now House/Cuddy...that would be fine. :D

*sigh*

I love it how these people don't seem to realize that if they want the Doyle parrallel to go on, they have to give up on the idea of hooking House up with any woman. Sherlock Holmes who actually gives a shit about *anyone* but Watson is no longer Sherlock Holmes. And Holmes romancing a girl is *definitely* no longer Holmes. Even Holmes voluntarily being around anyone but Watson is already kind of iffy.

At the root of all this silliness is the fact that the writers are, in the end, men, and so House's eventual inevitable TWU WUV with Cameron is the fulfillment of their own fantasies. Every man secretly wants to be gruff, macho, sexy, sulky and terrifically misunderstood, and they want a beautiful young woman to come along who would crave them sexually and accept them fully.

Hopefully it'll be three episodes of build-up, one episode of "Yah, Vagina!" and a two episode break-up, and we'll be done.

Wait a minute... THAT'S OVER A MONTH!

Hopefuly one-episode per action and we'll be back on the male/male A.S.A.P.
The only two guys I -really- want to see, settled are Chase & Foreman. Foreman, because I don't think we've seen his little nurse-friend in a few weeks and Chase, because... I really wanna know if he'd end up in another sub/dom relationship accidentally. That little wombat knew what he was getting into. ;D

Absolutely fascinating, both about H/W and that they are aware of the fanfic.

Many thanks for posting this; it made very interesting reading!

Knowing that they're aware of the fanfic makes me want to delete all of the near-porn I've written. O_O
