Hot Gimmick Chapter 52 Translation
Here's the translation for chapter 52 of Hot Gimmick. I'd be lying to say I was extremely disappointed with this chapter XD Now Aihara Miki should definitely introduce a new character. Anyhow, here's the translation, behind a link to avoid spoilers. Enjoy!

Chapter 52:

Page 1:
Hatsumi: (Once, I thought it wouldn’t work out.)
Hatsumi: (I had decided I would give him up.)
Hatsumi: (Why was it no use?)

Page 2:
Hatsumi: (Why can’t I stop this?)
[the sentence going at the top says “The long hit story! Finally, it heads towards the climax!”]

Page 3:
[top says “Hot Gimmick” “neighbors’ love game”]
Narrator: The overwhelming feelings which overlapped. Will Shinogu’s voice no longer reach her---?!

Page 4:
Hatsumi: I..w-was thinking…how I had to give you up….
Hatsumi: I’d decided…I’d forget you…
Hatsumi: I thought—if I tried r-really hard I’d be able to forget you…
Hatsumi: I thought I’d be able to forget—
Ryoki: Stupid woman.

Page 5:
Ryoki: That’s what you call a waste of time.

Page 6:
Hatsumi: (For the first time, I found out what there were such things as feelings you couldn’t give up.)
Hatsumi: (Even then—)
Hatsumi: But it’s…
Hatsumi: too late…
Ryoki: What?
Hatsumi: B-because you were saying you might go out with Saionji-san…that’s why I—
Shinogu: Hatsumi

Page 7:
Hatsumi: Ah
Hatsumi: Onii-chan…

Page 8:
Hatsumi: (It’s…)
Hatsumi: (too late.)
Shinogu: So you were here after all.
Shinogu: Dad and the others are back. Let’s go home quickly.
Shinogu: Akane…was saying how you were acting weird so I came to look for you.
Ryoki: Hey!
Ryoki: We’re not finished talking yet.
Shinogu: Sorry, but—

Page 9:
Shinogu: there’s no need for you two to talk.
Shinogu: Don’t come any nearer to Hatsumi than you already have.
Ryoki: Wha—
Shinogu: Don’t make Hatsumi cry ever again.
//realization//

Page 10:
[sign at top says “Ryoki Vision”]
Ryoki: Uuu…
[the sign pointing to Ryoki says “The person who didn’t do it”]
[the sign pointing to Shinogu says “The person who did it”]
[the writing between the two says “An aura that says he did it with Hatsumi”]
Ryoki: ku…
Ryoki: eh---Hey! [the writing under the bubble says “And they’re not even here anymore!”]
Hatsumi: (It’s too late.)
Hatsumi: (I was the one who said for Onii-chan to make me his.)
Hatsumi: (This way, everyone would be better off—)

Page 11:
Ryoki: Are you okay with that, Hatsumi?
Ryoki: What are you going to do by doing your best to give me up? You idiot.
Ryoki: Normally, a person would do her best because she doesn’t want to give up!

Page 12:
Ryoki: I’m not going to give up.
Ryoki: Ever.
Ryoki: I’ll make you realize that I’m better than your family or your brother.
Ryoki: You hear me, Narita-brother?
Ryoki: The guy she likes,

Page 13:
Ryoki: is definitely me!
Shinogu: Even if that’s true, it doesn’t matter…

Page 14:
Shinogu: Even if the person she likes isn’t me,
Shinogu: as long as she stays by my side, that’s all I need.
Shinogu: I want…
Shinogu: you to stay my Hatsumi…
Hatsumi: Then before, why didn’t you
Hatsumi: do anything?

Page 15:
Hatsumi: Why didn’t you
Hatsumi: make me yours?

Page 16:
[no dialogue]

Page 17:
Shinogu: Let’s do this later.
Shinogu: I’m happy just by you saying you wanted to be mine.
Shinogu: You should go take a shower. Your clothes are wet from your tears.
Shinogu: I’ll take a shower right after you. Let’s both cool our heads.
Hatsumi: (I lied to Tachibana-kun.)

Page 18:
Hatsumi: A…horrible woman like me…
Hatsumi: you should have done awful things to me.
Hatsumi: (I lied to him)
Hatsumi: (because I was jealous about Saionji-san.)
Hatsumi: I-I’m…s..sorry…
Hatsumi: I thought…I-I’d be able to forget…one day..
Hatsumi: if I became…y-yours…
Hatsumi: If I…became yours…
Hatsumi: even if you separated from the family…
Hatsumi: I thought…w-we’d be able to still…be a family…

Page 19:
Hatsumi: I-If everyone could just stay…as they were now…
Hatsumi: I thought as long as I had that…I could forget…
Hatsumi: B-but…I was wrong…
Hatsumi: Y-you’re an important part of my family…but…
Hatsumi: my feelings for you are different from the feelings I have towards Tachibana-kun…
Hatsumi: (I finally understand.)
Hatsumi: I’m sorry.

Page 20:
Hatsumi: No matter how long you wait for me…
Hatsumi: I can’t become…y-yours…

Page 21:
Father: What happened to Shinogu?
Father: Didn’t he just return with Hatsumi?
Mother: Oh, about that, he said something suddenly came up at his part time job. That’s why he headed back to his apartment.
Mother: He said he’s come again. That child—
Mother: he left this—
[the paper he left was the application form to separate from the family]
Mother: I wonder if…
Mother: we can’t change his mind…father… [in Japan married couples once they have a child often starts to call each other “Father” and “Mother” so that’s why she’s calling her husband “Father” ^^]

Page 22:
Hatsumi: (I don’t have the right)
Hatsumi: (to stop Onii-chan any more.)
Akane: …chan—
Akane: Hatsumi-chan…are you still awake?
Akane: Hey…you okay…--?
Akane: When you came back with Shinogu-kun just now, you were crying, weren’t you?...That’s why…
Akane: I thought you two might have had a fight about him moving out of the house.
Hatsumi: Aka-chin…
Akane: Ah—if you don’t want to talk about it, that’s totally okay with me.
Hatsumi: No, that’s not it…

Page 23:
Hatsumi: That’s not it…I—
Hatsumi: I like Ryoki-kun
Hatsumi: after all…
Hatsumi: But…because I do, I hurt Onii-chan, who was kind and cheered me up.
Hatsumi: And not to mention, this might cause trouble for everyone again…
Hatsumi: I’m sorry…
Hatsumi: I’m really sorry…
Hatsumi: Wah!
Akane: Hatsumi-chan!
Akane: That’s fine!

Page 24:
Akane: You’ve tried your best.
Akane: And even then, if you can’t hold back your feelings for him, then you don’t have suck it up!
Akane: Even if you tried, you wouldn’t be able to anyway.
Akane: That’s what love is!
Akane: I’m on your side!
Akane: I don’t know what happened between you and Shinogu-kun but
Akane: he’ll understand for sure.
Hatsumi: …Aka-chin…thank you…

Page 25:
Hatsumi: Thank you…
Hatsumi: (I was really happy,)
Hatsumi: (and I felt like I could try my best one more time.)

Thanks you very much for the translations, muchly appreciated XD

now..

this is so screwed up

This Ryoki/Shinogu baggage has "climaxed" to the same thing. now its just minus Hatsu's Virginity here on out.

Ryoki is the same as ever,
and Shinogu is sounding a little creepy on page 14

new character? pshh.just bring in Azusa!

hes the only other charcater who has actually changed over 10 volumes!

Humm... frankly, I'm way disappointed too. This played out exactly like how I imagined, and I'm not too happy to be able to predict an outcome in a manga, especially when I'm 100% correct. It's way too clicled im my opinion, and you're right that apart from Asuza, there hasn't been that much of character development between the 4 main protagonists. Well, since it's pretty obvious it's gonna end pretty soon, I'm not too keen on the way it's concluding. Reminds me of HanaKimi where I was a little obsessed at the beginning yet extremely disappointed at the end. Anyway, that was my 2 cents.

Chapter 52

2005-05-22 02:40 am UTC (link)
Yes, I kind of figured this was how it would lead out. Chapter 51 opened a whole closet full of possibilities and Aihara Miki, instead of using those fresh ideas, decided to stick to the basics. With the recent angst I think the series would have benefitted tremendously if Hatsumi had slept with Shinogu and Ryoki had slept with Saionji. It would have made their relationship all the more complex, and it would have been interesting to see how they rose above it all to remain a couple (or to choose a more unpopular choice---end the series with them still broken up ^^)

Shinogu's being squeezed for all he's worth--Aihara Miki should introduce a new character or bring Asahi into the scene as soon as she can. If Hatsumi isn't going to choose him, then it's time to stop with this storyline---especially now since she clearly stated in this chapter that no matter how long he waited, she would never be his. I think seven volumes is plenty enough for a storyline that'll never go anywhere.

THANK YOU <3
I liked this chapter. Even though I'm not a huge fan of Ryoki/Hatsumi I think it played out nicely. & I liked Akane here. I'm glad though, because after last chapter I was a little dissapointed with Shinogu, but now things have been cleared up. I'd like to see how things turn out for him now. I wonder what will happen to Azusa as well :/ So many unsettled issues D:

I think Ryoki has gone through a lot of development, from the beginning... In the beginning he was a guy that had no idea what a girlfriend was, or how to express love, or anything remotely romantic.. then he learnt what a gf was, and how to comfort and show some affection, and now towards the end he finally knows how to blatantly say exactly what he wants, and to tell Hatsumi exactly what he needs from her. True, he's always been controlling, and he's always been a little crazy. But without those things, he wouldn't be Ryoki, he'd become another typical guy blah blah boring :P
He's still rough with Hatsumi, but has learnt to be gentle sometimes too. I think he makes the best match for her *because* he pushes her around, in a way. He forces her to deal with things she always like to excuse or push aside, he makes her confront problems she never wanted to, and he pushes her to always stick to her heart and not what's happening around her. I think he's always tried to force her to be with him because he *knows* she loves him, and always has.

Hatsumi... really hasn't changed much, which makes me sad. She repeatedly makes the same mistakes, and repeats the same problems. She went from.. confused about love, in denial and weak Hatsumi to... confused, in denial about something else, weak Hatsumi? This is why I think she needs a Ryoki, she's like a flower and the wind easily carries her into whatever direction her life moves her towards. Ryoki is her anchor, he makes her have *real* sense to be honest with herself >:D Hatsumi is a well-intentioned liar, to herself and others, always has been. I wish she'd have lost more of that over time, but oh well...

Azusa *did* change, but I do wish he played more of a role too. Although, him and Ryoki are similar to me in their evolution. Yes, they began completely differently, sure. But when the storyline picks up, they're both doing something wrong to Hatsumi: one is betraying her and the other is hurting her by not understanding his actions. Both become better over time, and see themselves in a new way: Ryoki becomes an actual lover, capable of expressing love, and Azusa becomes an actual friend, capable of opening his heart and giving advice to various people, regardless of alliances or enemy boundaries.

hm.. Akane has definitely matured, I am very happy with her progress :D

yes, the story is predictable.. but man, isn't real life too? Part of why I love Hot Gimmick is because it's reliable and predictable as real life is, it's realistic in the sense that things always happen for a reason, and causes always lead to certain effects.

hm.. I babbled a bit, didn't I?
(I think it's obvious to see I am a Ryoki fan.. been rooting for him since day one ^^;)

I have this really weird feeling this manga is going to end like most shoujo manga...and that is...the main couple ends up getting married and they have kids or whatever...hahaha Hatsumi-and-Ryoki kids!!! That sucks though....I wanted something dramatic to happen!! I have a fleeting hope that something still might though...

This really is funny. For SEVEN volumes, Aihara has been leading us to believe it would be very complicated, then she wraps up that storyline with something like that. Hatsumi said in volume 5 and stuck to it. "He's my big brother." She has no other feelings for him. Thus, the story has gone nowhere, really. Shinogu, Hatsumi and Ryouki have changed. Just..slowly. Azusa hasn't changed that much. He swears to get revenge, he almost does, he feels bad, he claims to move on, then he finds out who really did it and swears to get revenge...again. Since we already see who will end up with who, I wonder what the actual ending will be like specifically. Geez...I'll really miss this series. It's my favorite. I've been reading it for almost a year and a half now. I've had fun talking about it. I wish it didn't have to end. When a series ends, I have to move on. I don't find series this great too often. Viz better license more Aihara.

And I thought Hatsumi clarified that she didn't sleep with Shinogu. She thought to herself that she lied because of Saionji and felt bad about it.

In a way, I'm happy Aihara retrained herself. It would have been melodrama overkill if Hatsumi & Ryouki slept with who they were going to sleep with. Hot Gimmick has always been intense, but it was never overly melodramatic (the way Peach Girl was), and I've always appreciated that. The plot has progressed steadily with a consistency that gave me the impression Aihara knew what she was doing and wasn't just making things up as she goes. So I'm glad she went with the most reasonable resolution, instead of what would have offered the most potential for more drama.

And I do think the main characters are changing for the better. aurora_dark covered Ryouki's character development nicely, but there's more. Take Shinogu for an example:

His conflict has always been whether he can overcome his unhealthy love for Hatsumi and move on with his life. The only person who can free him from his suffering is Hatsumi, not by giving herself to him, but by acknowledging his feelings and rejecting him honestly. She was never able to do that because she was ignorant of his feelings and clueless about love in general. It was necessary for her to experience love (through Ryouki) and understand it before she can honestly reject Shinogu, which she did in this chapter. That was a major development on her part. It also set up the most appropriate character development for Shinogu: for him to get over Hatsumi and start living for himself.

I don't think Shinogu has to be paired with someone at the end. I think for him to get over Hatsumi is happy ending enough.

To wingydingy:
Ok, I'm glad that you're happy about the way it happened but I have to ask you, does a manga have to be predictable to be consistent? I strongly think that the HG has established an interesting base concerning the character's personnalities and that it could have moved in a direction that is: unpredictable yet consistent, interesting without too much melodrama a la soap opera ,etc.

The very big problem that I see right now is that Hg falls exactly into the same pattern that I have read in other shojos. Imo, I think that instead of giving a realistic and interesting protrait of characters' development, we have here caricatures that are displayed the exact way we thought(at least I) it would:
Hatsumi - Shy and dependant and confused girl who falls un love with the wrong person
Ryoki - Arrogant boyfriend who is a mix between a teddy bear and a beast (Domyoji anyone?)
Shinogu - Nice guy who has a one-sided hard crush on the main girl yet is too nice (reminds me of Yuuhi from AyC)
And there's Asuza, a sweet boy who became obsessed with revenge. He was one who actually has an interesting development compared to the others 3 even if he is underused : gentle small child-obsessive freak-lonely guy(rejects everyone after Hatsu's dad apologized)-curious(I wouldn't say he reverted back to his obsessive self because he seemed less angry and hateful than he was before.
Anyway to summarize, the manga itself was very well constructed in the beginning yet falls into the same typical shojo syndrome. I find it unfortunate that I won't have the feeling of satisfaction after finishing the series. Like others shojos, it would slowly fade away from my memory because it didn't bring anything actually new. I'm not saying that I didn't like th series,on the contrary, I really enjoyed it but I enjoyed other shoujo, and Hg doesn't offer anything that actually stand out. There was the Akane/Subaru that I found yet there doesn't seem to ahve any new development for like, 10 chapters?

That was my two cents again yet I tried to stay objective as much as possible ! ^_^ ( I feel kinda bad bashing a manga that I enjoyed so much!)

No, I don't think a manga has to be predictable to be consistent. One reason I love Basara so much is because of its solid & unpredictable plot.

It would have been nice if Aihara had pull off a few surprises here without sacrificing the integrity of the plot, but I'm not unhappy with her playing things safe. This series has given me enough twists and turns, so if it makes a beeline to the end from here, that's fine by me. I actually don't think the plot is that predictable at this point. Certain things are still up in the air. And even if I can predict what happens, as long as things are well-executed, that's all that matters. Execution is key in my opinion, and I think Aihara is doing a fine job executing this plotline.

I'm not sure what you're expecting from the main characters exactly. They've all been that way since the beginning, kind of stereotypical but far from caricatures, and their development has been pretty realistic so far, to me at least.

The thing is, from the beginning, I didn't consider HG to be very original, in plot or character. But it does stand out to me, and I think what sets it apart is Aihara's execution. Her art is refreshing, her characters are appealing, and her plot is addictive without being melodramatic. It's a winning combination IMO.

Thanks once again for your awesome translations :D

I was hoping for a little more drama in this chapter, like a fight! Or Shinogu giving her up, something. It still was pretty good though, I'm glad she realized she'd never feel anything for Shinogu and that she loves Ryoki. Even though I was kinda hoping for more between her and Shinogu hehe. I'm sure there's lots more Aihara will do with the storyline before the end, I can't wait to see how it plays out!

Thank you very much for translating again. Overall, I was pleased with how things turned out. Hatsumi finally realized that she can't ever feel for Shinogu what she feels for Ryoki and it was good that she was able to tell him so, even though I know she was worried about hurting his feelings. And I think deep down, Shinogu realizes this too, which is why he didn't do anything with her. Now, Ryoki and Hatsumi both need to confess to each other that neither one of them did anything (I haven't seen the scans yet, so I don't know if Ryoki was present when Hatsumi was talking to Shinogu about that).

And yay for Akane being supportive!

Really, if any of you watched Felicity, you would remember when Noel and Felicity both slept with different people on the same night and it all turned to shite. That's what we would have seen happen. I think that Aihara really wants Hatsumi and Ryoki together...so she didn't put them in a situation where she knew one wouldn't forgive the other. Maybe, after this kinda climax, Hatsumi will realize that no matter what happened her feelings and Ryoki's feelings for her weren't able to be smothered... and then her real backbone will show through.

Thanks for the tanslation. :O)

I enjoy HG,but each new chapter she writes is giving me a sinking feeling. It seems like the manga is too too negative.
ryoki -- always have degrading words for Hatusmi (stupid,slave,idiot.etc.) even though he passionately delares his love commitment to her from the begining of the manga. No matter how much he loves her if he continues to degrades her anyway he is notin my #! list. I just believe love is positive and not negative esp. not a slap on the face as ryoki gave her in one of the chapter.

hatsumi-- is too weak and negative herself. she doesn't think positive about herself. she doesn't stand up for herself and what she wants.
she is only likable b/c she has a loving caring heart but she wouldn't be recommended to be anyone role model.

shinogue-- to stuck on his love for non-blood sister that he loose the importance of what a family is by wanting to get out in a perfectly loving family that loves him. Crazy man. There are so many people in the world who would want to be in his shoes.. to have a family to love them. Give that up for a girl is Crazy and selfish.

azusa-- crazy too and very sad life story. but he needs to grow up and go forward and let the past be the past.

The whole manga is NEGATIVE NEGATIVE NEGATIVE. I like the flow of the character and writing but when I analyze and see how it will fit in real life it is very lacking in teaching good values to the world.
~~ What can I say i'm a moralist ad practical. I agree if hatsumi doesn't feel anything for shinogue. she should tell him and he should go on wiht his life. eventually, he'll find the love of his life and realized that it wasn't his sister as he first thought it would be.

~~ Sorry, I was burning steam. I like this manga and was hoping it will turn positive eventually and not to its downward spiral of negatism.

~~ Thanks for letting me share my OP.(opnion)

Don't any of guys think that the main guy should be Shinogu. He's hot, cute, and nice. I really think he should be the main guy who gets Hatsumi. SHINOGU AND HATSUMI DESERVE TO BE TOGETHER AFTER ALL THEY WENT THROUGH. Ryoki is just a jackass. He doesn't seem to care about anyone, all he is, is a jealous, stupid, nonsense, and no understanding of other people. He's such a jerk. Hatsumi deserve to have Shinogu and Shinogu deserve to take Hatsumi and make her his. I'm sure he'll take better care of Hatsumi then Ryoki can ever do. I can't believe the story is ending with no ending or a nonsense ending.

ahhhh... I don't like Ryoki.. no offence.. but he is mean and rude and perverted!!! a total perv!!! Shinogu is kind and thoughtful and really sweet! and he works hard and isn't spoiled like Ryoki!! ahhh... I don't even wanna read the ending if she ends up with Ryoki... GRRRR!!! I was screaming after i read 11 with the ending.. about forgive me good and shinogue.. whats that supposed to mean.. u don't have to forgive god.. all u have to do is not do it.. AHHH!! i am so sorry.. its just I get so angry.. ahhh.. Shinogu and hatsumi as a couple will be good like they will walk through the beach togther and have fun and swim.. and they will like in a nice cottage home next to a lake with lots of pretty animals sorrounding it and 3 kids that love their parents and are kind to the little animals that come to visit.. but her and Ryoki will be a a dumb mansion with no life and no pretty animals and 15 spolied evil terrible children.. no offence... AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! sorry, I kinda got that out of my system. te he he
