| Croton seems to be dying, can it be saved? |

Can't take pictures right now, so I can't show what it looks like.
But, I have a croton I got from my aunt several years ago. I actually had two, and they both did well for a long time, but one died in the last several months. The other seemed to be going strong, however now it seems to be starting to go, too. Leaves are falling off pretty quickly and some are getting droopy even though it doesn't need watered.
I use plantfood in it that's always seemed to do it good in the past. My pets knocked all but maybe three leaves from each plant when I first got them, so I bought some KGro (generic Miracle Grow) and it seemed to do them wonderfully. I don't know what the numbers on it mean, but it has the numbers 15-30-15 on it.
I really don't want my plant to die, but I'm not sure what's wrong with it, how to save it, or even if it can be saved. I know I haven't really given a lot of info but there isn't much to say. The leaves aren't changing strange colors, they're just dropping off. I'm really hoping I can keep this one from going the way of it's brother. I was pretty upset when the first one died off. :( Plus, I can't even get replacements because I don't seem to have as much luck keeping new plants alive. The ones from my aunt I've had for 6 or 7 years now, and any I buy from a store seem to die within months. :(

Despite the fact that I'm domestically challenged, I've attempted to grow/maintain a couple plants around my house this summer for the first time. I've run into two problems:
1) I bought a Calladium plant and put it in a large cement pot on my front porch. When I planted it, I dug a hole in the pot (which already had old soil in it) and placed the root ball in it and filled it in with Miracle Grow potting soil. I was a little concerned that the pot wasn't deep enough (the space in the pot was about the size of a beach ball) and it looked as though the very tip of the rootball peeked out (I can see where all of the tubers join together). I've since tried to keep soil on the little part that sticks out. I live in Atlanta (zone 8 I think) and my porch is shaded, though it gets some direct light during certain hours. I check the soil almost every day, and when it feels dry I water it (usually every couple of days). I thought I was doing everything right, but brown spots have appeared on the ends of the leaves (which I've been cutting off) and some have turned light green/yellow and withered. There is a little growth at the root, but it seems most of the big ones are falling over/turning brown/withering. I know Calladium's aren't winter hardy, but it's August in Atlanta! How can I save this little guy?
2) I have a Dracaena corn plant tree-thing that has three different sized stalks. I keep this one in a corner indoors where it gets moderate-low sunlight. I planted it in a large pot with Miracle Grow potting soil, and I've watered it sporatically. Most of the leaves now have brown tips--which I've been cutting off. At first I thought maybe I wasn't watering it enough, but the soil still feels damp and I haven't watered it in a week. Any ideas?

Today as I was walking in the yard, I found a nice little yellow flower. I am wondering, does anybody know the name of this flower?
I am in zone 8b. The flower is yellow. The seedpods turn black when ripe. The leaves and the seedpod reminds me of peas... but this is not a pea. I think, this is some kind of wild flower.

| Tips and tricks on raising houseplants. |
[01 Aug 2008|10:14pm] |
Hi,
I need help with houseplants. My mom seems to take little care of the houseplants at home and I'm usually off at college studying. When I return home, however, I am privileged to water and revive the plant to a certain extent, but when I leave again, the plant will start wilting again.
I have a small bamboo plant in my room and I water it daily. Does anyone have any tips on taking care of houseplants, like keeping them away from heating vents, dusting the leaves off when dusty, or leaving them in the brightest parts of the house? Also, my little potted bamboo has leaves only coming out of one of its "chutes" but all the other ones will not grow back. Is there any way I can fix this?
My questions are a bit riddled throughout my entry, but thanks for reading and I will appreciate your help!

| Plants Go On A Journey Question |
[11 Jul 2008|11:06am] |
I'm wondering if anyone has ever moved far enough away that their plants ( indoors and out ) would be confined in a moving van for at least two days. Is this even do-able? Any suggestion will be very much appreciated.

| Resurrecting a Spider Plant |
[09 Jul 2008|05:53pm] |
I have a spider plant named Desk Tree that I've been taking care of since November. It's been real fun watching this this grow, but over the past few months its health has been declining. It's been really hot and humid here, and I think maybe I haven't been taking care of it as well as I should have been.
I know that spider plants are really really resilient (which is why I got one in the first place), but I need some experienced opinions here: Is my plant dead, or just mostly-dead? If it's the latter, what is the best course of action that I can take to get it back to full health?
( Photos - Then and Now )
It really saddens me to see my plant in such a poor condition, and I really hope there's something I can do to help it recover.

| unhappy maple tree |
[09 Jul 2008|03:48pm] |
ok it's not MISERABLE unhappy but some of the leaves are being skeletonized.
here's a photo of the leaf

( and a closeup of whats going on... )
any ideas? I'm in NW Connecticut, USA, border of zones 5 and 6. I haven't noticed this on any other maples, but I really havent looked yet.
FYI - I found some caterpillars in a bluebird box that was on the tree, I posted photos of them here for identification over at lepidopterists but I don't imagine they're the source of this problem.

| I don't know a thing!! |
[07 Jul 2008|10:41pm] |
So there is a little patch of land behind my apartment that I could garden... It gets direct sunlight for a few hours (5?) in the morning but spends the rest of the time in the shade. Tell me what I can plant (even in July?)!! And how to take care of it... ^^;
I don't care about flowers as much as I love leafy plants and especially colored leaves )pinks, reds, purples).... but I am not picky! Even a stunning weed garden would be nice ^^
...And! While I am at it! Recently I saw a plant in the neighborhood with dark purple leaves (almost black) and a few light purple bell-shaped flowers. What is it?

| Hi there - new member |
[05 Jul 2008|09:02am] |
Hi, my name is Lisa...I just joined after finding the group through my "hgtv" interest. I was pruning a rhododendron yesterday and noticed that we have quite the bumper crop of baby grasshoppers - they were hanging out on the underside of the leaves and their little molted shells were sticking around under there too.
We have cats and dogs at this house, so we cannot use stuff that is harmful to them, but I'd really like to off those grasshoppers. I would LOVE some advice on that! Thanks. :)

| Varigated Japanese Willow |
[18 Jun 2008|05:33pm] |
Wednesday, June 18, 2008 5:31 PM
I used the saw and cut the bottom out of the Variegated Japanese Willow which is as big as…well, the trampoline, but three times as high.
Now I can see the ground under it and about two feet up off the ground all around three sides of it.
Good. Now it can just grow up. It’s not supposed to take over the entire yard! We’re supposed to get shade from it, not a big snowball!
Or had I the wrong impression?

| Willem and I walked through the showy pink lady slipper orchids |
[15 Jun 2008|05:06pm] |
Sunday, June 15, 2008 5:04 PM
Willem and I went to Purdon’s to see the pink lady slipper orchids after church. We just got home. I did some Nancy Today’s there about the various plants. It’s such a peaceful place. A wooden boardwalk a few inches above the ground, takes you through the orchids.
They weren’t blooming as much as they usually are this time of year. Father’s day is the day they are usually ready to be seen.
It was nice walking through there with Willem, but there was a thunder-buster threatening to wallop us!
