And I heard you and Rupert Grint, the actor who plays Ron Weasley, filmed your first kiss recently.
We did.

What was that like ?
It was, it was… ugh, it was hard. It was really hard. We were both in the same boat, though. We both were really struggling with the idea of having to kiss each other, because our relationship is so platonic. He's like my brother, but we did it and we were happy.

Did you have a little pep talk beforehand ?
Yeah, we talked about it before. It was nice that we were in the same boat, as I said before. We both were just like, "Oh god, this is horrible."

Did you all have mints or gum on hand ?
We both agreed that we would clean our teeth, but that was it.

Did you and the other actors know what J.K. Rowling had planned for the seventh book in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows ? Or were you just as curious as the rest of us ?
Well, I was just as curious as everyone else. The only thing J.K. Rowling told me, she told me I would end up having to kiss both Dan [Radcliffe] and Rupert, and I was like, "No way!" This is before I read the last one, so I was like, "Oh, god." Because in the last one, Ron has a vision when he sees Harry and Hermione kissing in his vision, so I'm going to have to do that for the vision. Even though it doesn't actually happen, I still have to do it. I'm going to end up kissing both of them in the last film. Ugh, it's horrible.

Here's the transcript of what Yates said to Leaky during the NY red carpet.

Emma said that she and Rupert were really feeling the pressure from the public for the kiss in seven. How did you guys combat that?
DY: It's a big moment for both of them. It's a huge moment in a series of films. I love that relationship between Ron and Hermione. I love the fact that it's so repressed and trapped and unrequited and unfulfilled. ... I just said look guys, just give yourself to these characters. Let Ron take over, let Hermione take over. ... And give yourselves to those characters, let them do the snogging. You shouldn't even think about it.

And it was a hell of a snog actually.Yeah it's really cool actually. They did brilliantly, I'm so proud of them.


And there's a huge battle raging around them.
DY:We're in the middle of a huge battle when they snog. It's pretty intense.

For Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, their hardest scene was a kiss between their characters Ron and Hermione that shapes their destiny. “I remember being inches away from her lips and thinking, ‘Good lord, this is going to be strange,’” says Rupert. Adds Emma: “Rupert is like a brother to me, and our relationship couldn’t be more platonic. So kissing him – well, it felt like incest, to be honest. But I think it’s going to be very sweet.”

Now that we know the scene has been filmed...

Emma said: "On screen kisses are never nice and you sort of dread them. We know each other so well we are like brother and sister, and everyone on set was teasing us about the day we would have to kiss. But actually Rupert's a real gentleman and if I had to kiss anyone I'm glad it was him. There were no tongues involved."

Rupert said: "I filmed the kiss with Emma on the next movie a couple of weeks ago, it was weird. We've known each other so long and neither of us really wanted to do it but we just had get on with it, get into the character and then is was quite nice, but we were in a scary place to begin with."
