Freydis the Red (also known as Åsa Teaches Herself Illustrator™) [31 May 2009|02:33pm]

pinkhead

Freydis the Red is my first attempt at writing and drawing a full-length short story. It's based off of the life myth of Freydís Eiríksdóttir, daughter of Erik the Red.

Freydis is a villain. She is also an explorer, a mother, wife, and proud warrior. She's deceptive, unyielding, and cruel.

It's still a work in progress, but I hope to get more of it up after school is dealt with. Feedback would be lovely.

Green Corner: 12 Pages [14 Nov 2008|03:55pm]

lanisatu
I've recently completed page 12 of Green Corner. Please visit the Green Corner website to read the comic. Vote to see progress images for page 12.

There are some pencils beyond the completed 12 pages; but I make changes as I progress, so nothing in pencil is final. If you can't wait for more pages, the script for chapter one is also available on the site.

Progress images through page 11 and new avatars are viewable in the image gallery.

I posted about my tutorial for creating comics in Illustrator a while back. If you have any questions about how I achieve certain effects on any of the finished pages, just ask.

The trophy on page 12 is a 3D object (a feature introduced in Illustrator CS3).

If you want to be notified of updates to the Green Corner site, you can subscribe to the Midori Forest group or follow my art blog. The group also has free downloadable wallpapers.

Hope you enjoy the comic :)

Hi everyone! My name is Meghan, I'm 20 and I've been drawing comics for years and only in the last two have I really become interested in manga-style. I've been backreading since I joined and this seems like a really awesome community for feedback and I am desperate to hear some -- constructive criticism, thoughts, ideas regarding my work :D

I included some of my original comic I'm in the middle of drawing [I'm doing one page a day of it in November, for my own NaNo-style project] and a bit of doujinshi work I've done.

smallish images, but several )

thanks for looking :D

I drew a 5 page manga for a competition last month, but I didn't win, so I'm free to upload it now! *A*!!
Hop over to my website to read it! (It's under the manga section of course!)

It's not as great as I'll like it to be~ really rushed and the storyline isn't all that great~
Please don't laugh at it T3T;; I'm still a rookie! But I'm happy I finished it, even though it was last minute!

( R A N D O M :: The way the main character, Riley /Reap, holds his pen is the way I do so too! *__*;; )

Please no harsh criticism! T^T;;

This was posted to my art blog earlier, here.

Please let me know if you have any questions about items not answered in the tutorial.

Hope you like it!

Hi, I just wanted to share a new webcomic I started about a month ago. It's name is Overland, and it's about a hapless imp who suddenly gets put in charge of escorting a girl to the Overland (or, in our terms, the living world).

A few of the actual comic pages under the cut )

I've tried a lot of webcomics in the past, but this is probably the first time I've had as much fun creating one. I guess it's kind of inspired by the sort of comics serialized in Wings (with a bit of Mag Garden for good measure). Anyway, if you're interested, it'd be awesome if you checked it out!

Hey manga & comics artists! [05 Jul 2008|03:55pm]

canellaphile
I started a community for people who want to work along with the 15-week curriculum in Drawing Words & Writing Pictures, a how-to comics textbook recently published by Jessica Abel and Matt Madden for making comics, manga, or really any sequential art.

Anyone is invited to join! It's called [info]nomads_ink - here's the Intro post. We'll be doing weekly homework assignments from the book, but it should be pretty fun. Please feel free to spread the word. No, I'm not affiliated with the publishers or authors. ;)

An Occult Manga Idea~ [05 Jul 2008|11:15pm]

radiowallet
I just recently thought of having a manga with a supernatural/occult sort of theme, sort of like the mood of xxxHolic, one of my favorite mangas. So I thought I could base it on some kind of mythology or superstitions which is what they did in xxxHolic. Usually people go for Greek and Roman but I decided to go for my native culture and based it on Philippine mythology with maybe a mix of Asian legends~

Any Adobe Illustrator Questions? [02 Jul 2008|10:24pm]

lanisatu
I'm currently working on creating a tutorial for how to make comics with Adobe Illustrator. I use Illustrator for my own comic series, Green Corner, but I find that many comic artists online tend to choose Photoshop. I think that for the "cel shading" style, Illustrator is definitely worth considering. I am a graphic designer by trade, so I do use both programs (and others) quite regularly.

What kinds of questions do you have about Illustrator? Is there a reason you're hesitant to try it instead of Photoshop? My tutorial is being written with the novice user in mind, and I'm trying to give a solid overview of various tools and techniques.

If you have any questions, please let me know! I'd appreciate it.

I'll be sure to let you know when the tutorial is complete :)

Tips, opinions? [16 Jun 2008|07:34pm]

masiru_chan
So, I love drawing, but my skills are quite lacking in some areas. To solve this problem without stretching too far from my span of interest (like drawing circles over and over again), I decided to just draw a manga. For the fun of it. Even though, as a perfectionist, it's frustrating for me to see that it doesn't look professional -- at all xD However, I found it to be quite a nice solution for myself. I can have fun, learn, and develop. The main reason I'm so relaxed about this 'I've-only-started-drawing-manga-therefore-I-suck-at-it' attitude is because the story I'm drawing is very, uhm, gaggy. No, not just gaggy, it's plain crazy. So it's mostly about fun, and not all that serious angsty stuff my other ideas are like xD

I prepared a parody/humor manga about ... well, if you're interested, you can click on the cut bellow :P

First two pages:
(read from right to left)

Do you have any opinions, thoughts, or advice you'd like to share with me? ^_^

First time huh [05 May 2008|03:05am]

untypoed
I don't know alot about drawing manga and I want to.

My questions:

1. Does anyone have any easy tips on drawing manga?
2. I want to have a manga on a comic hosting website.. do I have to draw the lines, erasing, etc like in this picture for every single panel that I draw? Because that seems a bit.. time consuming.

When answering, please don't act like a total jerk. Just answer my questions nicely, please. ): I had a rough day and I don't like being jerked to.

Time to Shake Hands [30 Apr 2008|01:44am]

radiowallet

Hi there! I'm Radio Wallet but also known in the manga community as Naoki. I've been drawing for quite a while now, but I haven't been really able to stretch my wings and make my own long-running manga. I do have quite a few solid stories already which I'm eager to draw and I hope I get to sharing them here with you guys!

Although I'm curious on how you guys go around your own manga. What's your process? Such as the order of your writing, drawing, roughs, etc. And do you plan out the length of your whole story? As in from the beginning til the end?

Hi there! [27 Apr 2008|08:40pm]

Hi there, I'm Rae! I'm new to this community, nice to meet you all!

I've been drawing manga as a hobby for over 8 years now, and I'm just starting to get into creating my own comics and stories.
I mostly draw in the 'seinen' style, and I love reading comics for guys! When completing my work I use a range of Deleter pen nibs and ink, and Manga Studio for tone. I also use Photoshop CS and Copic Markers for colour.

Preview:

I post art on my own LJ account (though I've only made one post so far, but there will be more!), as well as on my personal website, http://ciao-gatto.co.uk.

Thanks for looking! <3
