fatalwhysperHello, it's me! James - I'm the mod of this place. Shanti created this roll playing game in hopes of kicking off a fresh community where we can become active and have our own fun with HP's World. It took off running, but slowed to a stop. I'm here to bring it back to snuff. I'm looking forward to getting this RP back to its original greatness.
Do not be afraid to participate if you've never roll-played before, a lot of us are first-timers and we're all here for each other. I am almost always around. If I'm not I guarantee I'll get back to you in under 48 hours - I'm pretty good when it comes to email.
If you have any questions, do NOT hesitate to ask me, as I want this community to be full of communication.
We are currently in the 6th year of Hogwarts after Christmas break. Please be sure to check your CLASS SCHEDULES so that you know when you have to pretend you were in class, etc.
INTRO: What this is and who we are.
Hogwarts Lives is a Role Playing Game (hereinafter RPG) revolving around Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the characters in the Harry Potter book series, and anything else in Harry Potter's world post fifth year aka sixth year. There is a set number of people in the community and you need apply to join. Please read over the community Plot Summary for a more detailed understanding. For rules and how to apply, see below.

+ You cannot post in this journal unless you are a member. To become a member, click here.
+ NO FLAMING unless, of course, it's in character and appropriate to the post/thread/general topic.
+ You can't join this community unless you want to play a character.
+ This community is part of a community of journals, not just an ljcommunity in itself. If you just read this (hogwarts_lives) LiveJournal you will not see what it's really like to be in this communty, nor will you really understand what's going on :) To gain a clearer grasp of how things go and what it's like to be a member SCROLL DOWN to the list of members at the bottom of the page. Click on any journal ending in HWL and then once you are at that journal see the friends page. Through your HWL friends page is the way that you view the HWL World.

adjective!Character : lol, this is my absolute favorite... it's a way to describe a way someone wrote a character, for example there's dark!Harry and angst!Harry and canon!Harry, etc.

3. Comment to this post with your application (app under link).
4. WAIT. *grins* For now, I'll be accepting the applications but I think along the road we may have a new accepting policy involving all the people currently at Hogwarts. Once you are accepted:

6. Join the community with your REAL LIFE account (I will not accept your HWL lj).
7. Join the OTHER communities with your HWL account (I will not accept your RL lj).
8. Create your character screen name for AIM (SN) if you so desire.
9. Comment to your acceptance letter here with your SN.

How does this work, you ask? Simple.
People join the community to play different characters from HP's world (students, teachers, alumni, other wizarding world folk, and ghosts even). Each character has their own journal in which he/she posts. All characters have the other characters on their friends lists and read the journals as a collective whole community, circling around the main community
hogwarts_lives. The community page and the personal journals have separate purposes. These are explained in detail here. We have "classes" and "homework," all of it just talking about it, of course... we don't actually *DO* it, but this is all pretend in the end, isn't it? And beyond that? We play! Sometimes the moderators will throw in a plot-twist and sometimes the characters will surprise themselves. What is boils down to is that we have fun and become great friends with eachother.For the Members
+ All members must have a LJ solely for their character. ALL LJ names will be "character_hwl." For examples, see the list of current characters. Everyone will be capable of posting in both the community and their journals. For the distinction on where to post what and why, see here
+ All members should have a character AOL Instant Messenger screen name (SN). Your character's SN should be closely related to your character's name (for logical reasons....) and may or may not contain the letters hwl at the end. AIM is a huge part of this community. Even if you aren't an AIMer (I most certainly am NOT), you may find RPing on AIM to be quite fun. The reason communication is so phenominally high in this community is because we're reasonably good friends online IC and OOC. This is, of course, thanks to AIM (and you've got to hand it to them... we RPers come from every corner of the world and yet we talk daily!) Get a SN - click on "AOL Instant Messenger" near the top of the loaded page.
+ All character journals MUST have this warning in their user information (HTML included for you):

+ No pimping of ANY kind. Even HP stuff... there wouldn't be people running around Hogwarts advertising LiveJournal communities. NO, THERE WOULDN'T. I know you were trying to argue! SORRY - Rowling said that wizards don't use the internet.
+ PREFECTS AND TEACHERS! It is perfectly fine to add/subtract House Points when you want. You can add them in posts or in owls, AIM conversations, exchanged emails, whatever. However, you must SUBMIT the points to have them counted. All points will be submitted to me here. This link can also be found on the journal page and in the memories. I will update the House Points totals regularly.
+ You can only take away or give house points if you're a prefect or a teacher (duh) and those of you who are, be fucking reasonable. You can't just write an entry if you're, say, Harry, saying that you are sooooo happy because Ron just gave you 2000 points for Christmas. No. The house points will be recorded here at the top of the page and on the journal page.
+ You must post at least once weekly. More posting is encouraged.
+ There are no language or content rules here, only rules on how to grade something explicit. If you don't think your character would swear, *don't* swear. Easy enough.
For the Posts
+ To play you must first understand the Five Levels of Posting Privacy. If you don't understand something, please, please, please ask. What you know only IC and what you know OOC are very important to distinguish as this is the entire base on which we play. You must understand this.
+ If what you've written is anything (anything = EVERYTHING = thoughts, reactions, provocations, AIM conversations, owls sent, whatever) that has explicitly sexual or highly graphic content, put it behind a cut with either R or NC-17 in the cut name itself. I suggest R for anything graphic or highly sexually suggestive and NC-17 or anything explicitly sexual. For specific ratings, please visit this post.
+ It is not necessary that you post normally in an lj-cut unless what you're posting something incredibly long. Use common sense. AIM conversations are almost always of an lj-cut length.
+ Try to keep OOC stuff out of AIM-RPing in your journal. I completely encourage you to get to know your fellow players in RL but please don't post the OOC parts in your journal.
+ To post something *completely* OOC (I mean about the community, be it questions or comments), you MUST put it behind a cut that says "MUGGLES" *snicker* Yes, you must. Haha. I love that word.
+ NO txt or l337 speak - no one at Hogwarts speaks like that. Smilies, ^_^ faces, *asterisk emotions*, ::colin emotions:: and all else are fine. Express emotions as you see fit.
+ When writing a on-going even in a comment-style RP, please specify before the cut whether it is "complete" or "in progress." That way, we knoe when we read back what is done and ready for reading and what isn't.
+ Don't write other PCs' reactions without their approval. If you want to write a whole fiction, *please* contact the other people involved and show them the fiction first for their approval. Usually people will approve and then play off of it in their own posts. You can post reactions from NPCs when desired, but nothing outrageous or OOC, please.
+ If you receive an owl and you reply right away, do so in a comment. A whole thread of owl letters makes sense. However, if it takes you time to respond (assuming you weren't pecked to death because the letter wasn't urgent), you may do so in a new post.
Owl senders who don't receive quick responses: feel free to randomly update with things like, [ I'm mad that (hwl!Character) hasn't responded to my owl yet. I thought I told (insert owl's name) to peck her to death! ] or simply post [ *(owl's name) pecks madly at hwl!Character* ] for a bit of fun.
You don't need permission from hwl!Character to write the latter, either - he/she could be anywhere. I don't think it's character infringement.
+ If you post something very obscure or completely out of Rowling's world (e.g. Voldemort coming to Hogwarts because somehow he can? and kills Dumbledore) I reserve the right to delete your post as if it didn't happen. If you want to insert a MAJOR plot change (like killing a character, leaving the school, dropping a class) email us and either I'll decide or we'll have a vote.
+ Please see HOW and WHERE to post homework so that you don't fail all of your classes.
+ If a certain character isn't following the rules you can email me about it. We can always resolve issues. If there's anything I've learned in my life thus far, it's that talking can resolve 99 percent of all problems. Worst comes to worst I'll kick the offender off the community and we'll advertise for a new person to fill their role. I would rather not do this so please, bring problems to my attention - even problems about me. And stop apologizing for asking questions or making suggestions! You all MAKE this community... without you it's just a bunch of working HTML that's waiting for interaction.
