For the record: my thinking is 80 pages of text ~ 1 hour of "film".

FIRST SEASON:
* On Basilisk Station: 5 episodes
* With One Stone (From Service of the Sword): 2 episodes
* The Honor of the Queen: 5 episodes
* The Short Victorious War: 4 episodes
* Field of Dishonor: 4 episodes
* Flag In Exile: 4 episodes
* Honor Among Enemies: 4 episodes (plus cliffhanger lead-in to In Enemy Hands)

SECOND SEASON:
* In Enemy Hands: 4 episodes
* Echoes of Honor: 7 episodes
* Ashes of Victory: 5 episodes
* From The Highlands (From Changer of Worlds): 1 episode
* Service of the Sword: 3 episodes
* Crown Of Slaves: 6 episodes
(We may have a few original stories in this season. Or use one of the treecat stories.)

THIRD SEASON:
* War of Honor: 10 episodes
* The Shadow of Saganami: 9 episodes
* At All Costs: 11 episodes (I'd cut this at the point of the Havenite Fleet's arrival in Manticore system for the cliff-hanger for the Fourth Season.)

EDIT: Changing the order due to a re-read!

I'm sure a lot of you have also been thinking this way. What I present here is only the method I'd choose, for blocking and setting the order of episodes.

This is only a preliminary block. I may change some things. Assuming hour-long episodes...

FIRST SEASON:
* On Basilisk Station: 5 episodes
* The Honor of the Queen: 5 episodes
* The Short Victorious War: 4 episodes
* Field of Dishonor: 4 episodes
* Flag In Exile: 4 episodes
* Honor Among Enemies: 4 episodes...but with a twist that the season ends with Honor's capture from In Enemy Hands.

SECOND SEASON:
* In Enemy Hands: 4 episodes
* Echoes of Honor: 7 episodes
* Ashes of Victory: 5 episodes...

...and the problem here is whether we want to go with Crown of Slaves or War of Honor next. At 6 episodes, Crown is too short to close out the season, but War would take 10 episodes to tell. Perhaps a place in War early on could be used as a season-ending cliffhanger. Perhaps the sequence when the "strange fleet" shows up in front of Honor's in Silesia...

I'd like your thoughts before I continue.

Barflies in the Honorverse conference are organizing dinner outings; if you're not on Baen's Bar, see the main Baen Books page here - http://www.baen.com/ and click on "Baen's Bar" on the far right. If it's your first time, you'll need to register. Once you're in, you'll see a list of Newsgroups. They're alphabetical once you get past FAQs, Admin, Toni's Table, Publisher's Podium, Jim Minz's Biergarten, and Webscriptions; the two for Weber are BuShips and Honorverse--the planning all seems to be happening in Honorverse.

If you regularly watch Stargate: Atlantis you probably already know that executive producer Joseph Mallozzi has a blog here:

http://josephmallozzi.wordpress.com/

He's doing a cool thing--trying to encourage people who watch sf on TV to read sf as well, so he does an online Book of the Month group that's actually two or three books... Next week, it's On Basilisk Station. :)

It's not letting the cat out of the bag to say that Weber will be guest-blogging one day next week, answering questions from the fans.

Spike and Angel, President Roslin and Gaius Baltar, Harry and Hermione—shippers often find pairings that the original author might have overlooked. What coupling of fictional characters would you most like to see?

I wonder about Ruth Winton and Victor Cachat, from the Honorverse books Crown of Slaves onward. Yes, she's a teenage royal. Yes, he's a killer covert agent from a nation who's currently an enemy of her nation. They've met and worked together. They're both very cool in their own manner. I wonder if David Weber made them for each other.

Joseph Mallozzi, executive producer of Stargate Atlantis, runs a monthly book club on his blog and has chosen On Basilisk Station as the January 2009 SF book.
(announcement here)

They'll be discussing the book the week of 14 January and David Weber himself will be commenting.

Part 1 if Blackfive's interview with author David Weber is now online:

http://www.webscription.net/s-108-david-weber.aspx

I love that when asked about his favorite authors, he mentions two of my (other) favorites as well: Emma Bull, and Katherine Kurtz. :)

This is just part one. Other interviews: David Drake, Mark Van Name, Tom Kratman, and Michael Z. Williamson are also up and have 4-5 parts each. Enjoy!

During a re read of At all costs. I was reading about the battle of solon when Honor had to leave Michelle Henke behind. I noticed to very familiar names. The solon system had a gas giant named merlin. It also had an asteroid belt called Nimue. I started laughing when i realized that both names were for the main character in DW's Safehold series. Commander Nimue alban and, her pica persona. Merlin Anthrawes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Off_Armageddon_Reef
I have seen many instances throughout the honorverse compared to other series i have read by him. The instances are very interesting.

Wanna talk a moment about Tonnage.

Everybody learns in their early years in school that a ton is 2000 pounds in English Measure, or 1000 kilograms in Metric. But there is another kind of ton--Vessel Ton, which is used to gauge the size of ships. And it isn't a measure of mass...it's a measure of space!

A Vessel Ton is 100 Cubic Feet, or about 2.832 Cubic Meters. It can be represented as a cube 4' 7 13/16" on a side (1.52 Meters) or as a sphere 5' 9" in diameter (1.75 Meters).

Now, we know that starships in the Honorverse conform to a general hull shape because of the constraints of the impeller wedge technology...the faceted spindle-with-hammerheads design. I wonder how simple or hard it could be to just have a paradigm made that when you bubble in the projected tonnage the model would give you a rough idea about dimensions, how many crew members needed, space for weapons and powerplants, and so on.

I bet somebody's already done it for the games. But just in case they haven't, the idea is there.

As some of you may know, David accidentally snippeted the entire manuscript of Storm From the Shadows a couple of weeks ago, in his conference on Baen's Bar. It's still not quite ready for e-ARC prime time, but if you really want the "Oopsie" version, as it's now called, it's available on Webscriptions here:

http://www.webscription.net/p-914-storm-from-the-shadows-oopsie.aspx

Enjoy!

Stanislav has written me back already and has sent me some detail photos from his custom RMMC Enlisted costume.

His patches were tailor-made from pictures he sent an embroidery company from the Jaynes RMN source book.

Photos under the cut! )

Also, Stanislav's group does have a Web site, but it's in Czech. Check it out here: http://phantom.suewebik.net/

As some of you might remember, I do concept design and illustration for a small games company that has the license to make products based on the Honor Harrington novels.

One of the first major products I was involved in I designed some uniforms and a bunch of equipment for a force of space marines from the books. Here is the design we came up with:

This morning I found in my inbox a letter from an Honor fan from the Czech Republic who had build a fantastic costume based on our design:

It's hard to overstate how cool this is to me. This is one of the reasons I want to be an illustrator and more specifically a concept designer: to see the things I draw come to life. I'm still blown away!

I'm going to write Stanislav back, hopefully he and his group (he says there is a whole club) will be making more costumes in the future. They might have a Web site or something I can post.

(Cross posted from my personal journal since you guys would get a kick out of it.)

Over the course of her career as a Ship's Captain, has Honor ever dispensed the duty of presiding over a marriage ceremony for two other characters aboard her ship?

I've recently gotten a new job where I can listen to a cd player or mp3 player and they in fact would rather you be listening to something on headphones rather than talk to each other and I was wondering if anyone here knew where I could find audio versions of the Honor Harrington books to listen too. Ten hours of silence makes for a verrrry long day. I would prefer they be legal versions if I could lay my hands on those. Yet even on iTunes and audible.com all I could find was WAR OF HONOR, but no others. Can anyone help me?

I know this is all about the honorverse and all that. However, i thought those that would like to know. The second book in the safhold series. "By Schism rent asunder." Came out today. I picked up my copy from barnes and noble. In an ironic twist. As soon as i got home i got a letter from B&N that had discount stickers i could have used. :(

Today, while looking for something else, I found this article and I was intrigued.

Cutting to the Punchline--SPOILERS! )

Which in my mind, begs a question: If such a ploy happened in the Honorverse, which nation would do it, and which nation would be a willing (and clueless?) partner?

...Go to the Books Warehouse atop the multi-level shopping mall near the Ripley's Aquarium. They have a pile of Baen hardcovers...including a good share of HonorVerse titles. At All Costs, Service of the Sword, War of Honor...

And what I bought this week:
The Shadow of Saganami
Crown of Slaves
and
Echoes of Honor, which I read before from the CD-ROM included with War of Honor, but wanted a hard copy of anyway.

Minor Spoilage )

More to come.

I am planning on attending dragon con 2008. I am wanting to make my own mantie uniform. I am wondering if anyone who is into costume making would know where i could find the gold rings for the sleeves and the shoulder boards. The uniform it'self won't be a problem to have made. I've seen some really good uniforms but can't figure out how they made some of the uniform items or where they found the shoulder flashes any links or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
