The Violin [11 Aug 2008|02:22pm]

1776_nixongurl
Ok... so in </a></font></b></a>[info]foundinfathers I've been doing some stories and so far this has been my favorite. I'm so sorry, but it's kind of going to jump forward in time a lot, but I'll be sure to tell you. I am sure that this story is awful, but I thought I would pass it along anyways.
Title: The Violin
Author: 1776_nixongurl
Rating: PG
Characters: Thomas Jefferson, Martha Jefferson (Wife, I refer to her as Patty starting at Chapter 2), Martha Jefferson (daughter), Abigail Adams, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin
Summary: He plays the violin...

Weekly JournalWhoring [10 Aug 2008|01:42pm]

I got to thinking about what happens when an interest in recreating the past goes too far. A short essay was the result.

Warning: this post references the American Civil War. I call it the American Civil War. If you call it the War Between the States or the War of Northern Aggression, perhaps we can agree to disagree about this, and move on. (I learned an unpleasant lesson once about careless internet references to the Civil War, and I do not care to repeat that experience.)

But the post is mostly about historical re-enactment, costumes, and when not to stick your head in the sand.

Anyone else got writing to share?

Umm..I found you guys threw the search :D and decided, 'Gee, why don't I join?'

Name: Mika
Age: physically (18) mentally (10)
Gender: Female  ^-^
Location:City of Brotherly love, Philadelphia PA
Favorite time period(s): I only have 2, sad to say...The Revolutionary War and the Roaring Twenties
Favorite historical figure(s): Alexander Hamilton, George Washington, Thaddeus Stevens, Adolf Hitler, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, F.Scott Fitzgerald(wonder if he counts?)
What makes you a history nerd?: I asked my mother last year for my birthday to take me to the Constitution Center and a walking tour of Old City Philadelphia. I nearly faint everytime I get a 10 dollar bill and I filled in a History Fangirl meme. I own countless books on my fav historical figures and I missed out on buying my cat  some littler just to get Alexander Hamilton's biography. I even like history slash...that's not strange, is it?
Something random about you: I like even numbers ( some include 4, and 22), I know useless facts, I watched 1776 like 45 times (twice I had to pay a fine of 14 bucks because I gave it to the liabary late), and the History Channel, NatGeo, and History International channels are programed as my favorites on my cable.
 Isn't he just awesome looking?

hello! [07 Aug 2008|09:22pm]

endoftheworld98
I've lurked for some time, but I was rather shy to introduce myself....Well, here I am! :)
Name: Kelsey
Age: 17
Gender: ...female. -_-;
Location: Colorado/ New York for college
Favorite time period(s): Everything 17th century through 1989, except the US Civil War and anything to do with cowboys or related western themes. And also ancient Japan and Egypt a little bit.
Favorite historical figure(s): Louis XIV, Voltaire, Alexander Hamilton, Lafayette, FDR, ...Hitler, Napoleon III, people who like France (excluding Jefferson), Frederick the Great, de Gaulle, Clemenceau, Robespierre, all the great artists (of any kind) of the jazz age, I have a soft spot for Zinoviev, Bukharin, and other mild Russian revolutionaries, Imre Nagy, Youssoupov, anyone involved in the Great War, and way too many others.
What makes you a history nerd?: I get really excited about history. Like woah. I can get kind of too into it and have been known to frighten people at used bookstores. And I giggle about historical figures like regular people do about the people in movie theatres. I like to collect history related jewelry. And I picked my college because of the sexy Hamilton statue.
Something random about you: I like to bake desserts, but I don't really like to eat sweet things. o_o;

Victorians [06 Aug 2008|08:28pm]

So, I got drawn into a discussion about Victorian history and Victorian-themed fiction recently. It resulted in a Victorian-themed post, about historical novels, and how to get inside the minds of people in the past.

Introduction. [04 Aug 2008|11:26pm]

Well hello there!

Name: Heidi
Age: 16
Gender: F
Location: Utah
Favorite time period(s): Basically everything BC. Ancient Egypt, Persian Empire, Classic Maya, Greece, pre-Roman Europe... Ottoman Empire, Moorish Spain, Mughal Empire, pre-Columbian Americas and then First Contact (Columbus, conquistadors, etc.), French Revolution. I find most history interesting, except for a few things like Queen Elizabeth and all that England stuff (no offense, just not my cup of tea (ha, get it?)).
Favorite historical figure(s): Cyrus the Great, Alexander the Great (duh), Maximilien Robespierre, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and I know there are some I'm forgetting...
What makes you a history nerd?: I walked into Borders the other day and practically had an orgasm right there on the spot because there was the new issue of NatGeo about Iran (Persia) right next to an archaeology magazine featuring pre-Roman Iberia. sdghslkghldskhg, basically.
Something random about you: I like mashed potatoes. Random enough? How about this:

Okay, this might sound weird. But. I'm really not that into European history. Like I said earlier, the whole King Arthur/Elizabeth/Tudors thing is just so boring to me. I've never really understood the obsession with England, which is kinda funny, considering English/Irish/Scottish is most of my heritage.

I like ancient Europe, though. I am a total nerd for the ancient stuff. It's so much more fascinating to me. Everything from the very beginnings of humanity up until 1 AD is what I really love. There are a few things after that, but most of my obsession stays in the BC area. That's when all the really important stuff happened, if you ask me. I mean, the Stone Age, the Bronze Age. Humans first discovering agriculture. If that never happened then I wouldn't be sitting at a computer in a carpeted bedroom in NORTH AMERICA, a place where white people would never have set foot if it weren't for the free time to discover travel and sailing. I'm sure that a lot of you guys, including me, have a certain time period that we would just love to live in. For me it would have been when Alexander was conquering right and left, or when Colmubus first sailed. Sure, Columbus' discovery of the Americas was one of the worst things to ever happen in human history, but what a discovery it was! Can you imagine being a European in a boat in the middle of the ocean for months and then finally seeing land that you weren't even sure existed, and then to see that there were actually people there? Imagine being a crew member on the Santa Maria in October 1492.

I'm rambling. As you can see, I get kind of carried away with history. There's a great quote on the back of this history book I have (History: The Definitive Visual Guide) by George Santayana: "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it." I think all of us here know how utterly true that statement is.

The question on the intro-post survey about favorite historical figures made me wonder: does anyone have a least favorite historical figure, someone who just rubs you the wrong way and you dislike for purely idiosyncratic reasons? Or, alternately, is there someone you feel has been given the short end of the stick by historians and deserves more sympathy?

Hi all! I'm happy I found this community . . .

Name: baltimoreandme (or Charlie, short for Charlotte)
Age: 28
Gender: F
Location: undisclosed
Favorite time period(s): 1560-1720
Favorite historical figure(s):Famous ones: Elizabeth I, Charles Calvert (3rd Lord Baltimore, proprietor of Maryland), Gov. Thomas Hutchinson of Massachusetts, Samuel Pepys, Sir William Berkeley. Totally obscure ones: Christopher Rousby, of Calvert County, Md. (d. 1684) and Ebenezer Cooke.
What makes you a history nerd?:When I took the PSAT at 15, I filled in the bubbles for "history" and "historian" for the college major, and the career, that I planned. As it happens, I turned out to be right on both counts. Who says standardized tests prove nothing?
Something random about you: I have discovered, recently, that in addition to scholarly articles, I write magical-realism-style historical fiction. My most recent effort is based on some documents I came across in my research. It is about an unusual murder that occurred in Maryland in 1684.

Oh my God, I've found my people at long last.

Name: DT
Age: 18
Gender: Female
Location: Boston, MA (woohooo!), but heading out to Northampton for college come late August
Favorite time period(s): Ancient Egypt, Roman Empire, Elizabethan Age, American Revolution, Civil War, World War II, Cold War
Favorite historical figure(s): Queen Hatshepsut, Queen Cleopatra VII, Julius Caesar, Queen Elizabeth I, George Washington, John Adams, Alexander Hamilton (curse you, Aaron Burr!), Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt, General Dwight D. Eisenhower, pretty much anyone serving in the military during WWII, and Ronald Reagan.
What makes you a history nerd?: I love all things history; hell, I read ahead in all my history textbooks for fun. My greatest nerd moment was in my Humanities class when I rambled off the Spanish line of succession starting with Juana the Mad and ending with Philip II so I could tie in the Tudors. There was dead silence in the classroom for a good ten seconds. I am ridiculously proud of that moment.
Something random about you: I am a complete and utter Red Sox fanatic, absolutely insane. When I'm not fangirling about the Battle of Leyte Gulf (my current historical obsession), I'm ranting about my Sox. I also love all things military (I want to marry an aircraft carrier captain) and I'll read just about anything in the bookstore save romance novels.

Favorite time period(s): Pre-Norman invasion England, French Revolution
Favorite historical figure(s): Napoleon, Louis XI, Alfred the Great, G. K. Chesterton, Thomas Aquinas, Mozart, Henry Morgan, George Washington
What makes you a history nerd?: Weeeell, I'd say take a gander at my bookshelves (not a book on a contemporary topic among them) and my walls which are plastered with antique maps but as real proof I offer you this: When I get drunk, I speak exclusively about history. I babble and giggle and ramble and shout the glories of so-and-so's magnificent battle/escape/book/speech/painting/etc. My friends now try to keep me from getting too much to drink -_- You might also take proof from the fact that I'm about to become an archaeology major as soon as I transfer. Heaven!! ^_^
Something random about you: I own a crab monkey skull. Or was it a Vervet monkey? >_>;;  Anyway, real bone XD Anthropology and primatology is also, how shall I say... passions of mine.

Favorite time period(s): early 20th century, first world war, European history generally, specific Germany and Eastern Europe, sometimes sport history like gimnastics.. rather odd yes, and constantly I discover also new areas of interest
Favorite historical figure(s): J.R.R. Tolkien ( I am not certain if this can be considered but his views of first and second world war, his experience of the Somme, and ideas in general are fascinating to me.) Alexander Kerensky, Georgi Plekhanov, Woodrow Wilson, Gavrilo Princip, but more than certain historical figures I like researching or imagining life in history for people in general.
What makes you a history nerd?: To begin, I am just a nerd. I read maybe too much (if that is possible) and have far too much imagination. I also have spent most of my life in a place surrounded with significance to the great patriotic war. I also like historical costume, although I am much less than good at making it.
Something random about you: I have a bit of a hobby for critisising historyical films, although usually I enjoy them...I am a gymnast, competing since I was 5 years, and now helping to instruct. I also love studying language (but apoligise for mistakes of English. :)

Why am I a history nerd?

I got two ferrets recently.  One is awesome and playful and super calm and the best ferret ever.  The other bites (doesn't break the skin but latches on to your hands and feet) and is evil.

What did I name these two ferrets?

I named the awesome one Alexander Hamilton and I named the evil one who bites Aaron Burr.
