Hi! This community was founded to take a look at the different ways gender has been constructed and subverted in different societies throughout time. It's also intended to show the achievements of those individuals or groups who defied traditional gender barriers. In essence, we're writing an informal textbook for a few groups of people who seldom find representation in mainstream education.
A lot of this will be armchair history and gender studies, but try to include sources that other people can examine and use for their own purposes. Articles are welcome, but so is artwork, literature and mythology that illustrates larger societal concerns. Even questions and urban legends are welcome, just be careful about how you represent information. Off-topic posts will be deleted. For the sake of those quickly scanning through the posts, you might want to consider listing the geographical region and general or specific time period that is the subject of your post in a prominent location (say, at the top of your post, or in the subject bar). Also, I highly recommend that you make use of the lj-cut tool. Large articles and pictures should be hidden behind cuts for the easy reading of the community.
Last of all, this community is for fun and is open to the public, no harrassment or hate speech will be tolerated. Respect each other's differences. I reserve the right to delete any post I consider inflammatory.
